Interestingly, the phenomenon of Wii love is already starting to have some unusual economic side effects -- the most recent being a precipitous drop in the overall ratings (and revenue) enjoyed by Japanese television stations.

According to a recent article over at the Times, enthusiasm for the Wii is starting to seriously adversely affect the bottom line of Japan's mainstream broadcast networks, especially in the economically-critical prime-time "golden hour".

The article cites a senior executive at Fuji TV (Japan's largest commercial television channel), who accuses the Wii of 'stealing' families away from the normal network fare of Samurai dramas, wacky game shows, variety shows, etc. customarily broadcast during the summer months. As evidence, he points to the fact that last week was the first in nearly two decades where no single show on any commercial station attracted more than a 9 per cent audience share.

"The quality of programming has always been a little cyclical in Japan", comments an executive at rival TV station TBS "but there has never been a period of decline like the one we are seeing now. There are outside factors at work. One is people watching TV on their cell phones where we can't track them, but the really big factor is the time people are spending on the Wii."
    Hahahahaha.

That...that just can't be right. There simply aren't enough Wiis to make that huge of an impact on TV ratings yet, unless everyone who owns one and everyone they know get together every night to play the dang thing. Or am I missing something?

I suspect it's largely that Japan TV is in decline and they're just blaming the popular new thing, that there Wii machine.

    Also, OP updated.

Everytime I look at the Japan 360 number I cringe. Man alive. That number alone probably keeps MGS4 and FF XIII from ever going multiplatform.

Not really. MGS4 and FFXIII both sell really well outside of Japan. It definitely prevents most of the niche games from becoming multiplatform.

I understand well enough that they do good outside of Japan, in fact MGS does better. Let me ask you this though, do you really think SE or Konami would release a title mutliplatform if it didn't sell well at all in the homeland? Sure, Konami did it once before with MGS 2, and that had pretty lackluster sales. Square on the other hand is much less likely to do so. LR notwithstanding.

It's times like these were Weekly US numbers would be a godsend. You see, it's been revealed that the US pricecut on the 60 GB unit isn't a new price as much as it is a clearance price on a discontinued model. They expect that buy the end of the month the 60 GB will be sold out. I think they are full of it, and it'll be findable for most of the rest of the summer.

I have no clue how many are in the backrooms of various places. I bet Gamestop will clear out pretty quick, but I've heard from a source that just about every Best Buy in the US has a pallet or two of the things in each store, not including any backstocked.

Sony has hit 1 million in Japan.
    http://investing.reuters.co.uk/news/articleinvesting.aspx?type=marketsNewsUS&storyID=2007-07-18T074048Z_01_T148936_RTRIDST_0_SONY-PS3.XML
According to game magazine publisher Enterbrain, Sony has sold 1.01 million units of the PS3 as of July 15 while Wii sales totalled 2.9 million units as of July 8 and sales of Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 have came to 420,705 units.

I have a question. Is there something about Sony that forces the execs to compare consoles to food?
    http://www.gamepro.com/gamepro/domestic/games/features/122988.shtml
I think the PS3 is the Surf 'n Turf. You want the lobster and steak and you're going to give yourself the treat of getting the best thing on the menu. The PS2 is your favorite burger restaurant -- you go there for comfort food and it's just always good and is a good value.

[As for the other two consoles], one [Wii] is a lollipop, and I'm too old for lollipops. The other one [Xbox 360] I get sick from once in a while because the cook isn't always reliable.
As far as I know lobster and steak businesses sell much less food than the burger joints.

Ah, the machine awakens from slumber once more! Are the NPD figures for June still coming tomorrow?

Also, Canada's got the Nintendo fever:
TORONTO (CP) - Nintendo dominated the June video games sales chart in Canada, taking the top three spots and 10 of the top 12.

"Guitar Hero 2" also did well, occupying three spots in the top 20.

The top-selling game was "Mario Party 8" for the Wii, followed by "Wii Play" and "Pokemon Diamond" (DS). "Forza Motorsport 2" for the Xbox 360 ranked fourth, followed by Nintendo's "Pokemon Pearl" (DS).

The Xbox 360 version of Red Octane's "Guitar Hero," the version with the guitar accessory, ranked sixth. The PlayStation 2 versions of the game ranked 14th - with the guitar accessory included - and 15th, without the guitar.

The highest new entry to the June chart was Capcom's "Resident Evil 4" for the Wii, at No. 7.

In all, Nintendo had 12 of the top 20 games. The other eight were divided between PlayStation (four for PS2 and one for PS3) and Xbox 360 (three).

Sony has hit 1 million in Japan.
    http://investing.reuters.co.uk/news/articleinvesting.aspx?type=marketsNewsUS&storyID=2007-07-18T074048Z_01_T148936_RTRIDST_0_SONY-PS3.XML
According to game magazine publisher Enterbrain, Sony has sold 1.01 million units of the PS3 as of July 15 while Wii sales totalled 2.9 million units as of July 8 and sales of Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 have came to 420,705 units.

If they got this information from anyone even CLOSE to Sony, that's 1.01 mil SHIPPED, not sold. I don't believe it just yet, but I'm willing to accept it.

It is independent. There numbers are usually about the same as media create's numbers.

Ok, good enough. :) Sony has always just made me worry about just how much they like to skew the numbers.

You should add My Housekeeping Diary to the list.
