Has anyone had problems installing their zune (30) on Vista x64?
I've downloaded and installed the correct software but when I plug in my Zune it says there was an error and it can't install the device.
I've tried removing it and adding it again and all that jazz; I just can't figure out what is up.
Right click -> Run as Admin?
Im on the admin account.
The zune software installs fine, and when I plug the zune in it reads it as a zune, it just gives me a device error.
Check the firmware? I don't know, try calling Zune CS? They actually aren't that bad.
I tried it again after fiddling with some other stuff and it finally worked. Seems to be fine now.
I'm curious if there's a way to "unlock" the reserved data on the Zune. I loaded my music library onto the zune from my laptop but now I set my Zune to be attached to my desktop and it's telling me all the music is reserved.
I could just format it and reload it (what I did last time) but that's obnoxious.
Both, if you tied the Zune to a Zune Account. You can register from within the software (or at least, be linked to a page where you can register) by looking in the upper right corner; there should be a Sign In link there.

Ah, thanks.
It records plays from the Zune software automatically, and anytime you sync your Zune it will then also add the plays from the device. (it used to be somewhat flaky and not always record all the plays, but it's pretty much spot on now from what I can tell)

playing Space Battle while listening to the NASA voyager recordings is cool, but it's still a boring game. I'm also getting the feeling that I'm not supposed to be auto-firing constantly. Am I correct?
Suidoku is rad, though.

Nah, it auto-fires for you on it's own, and you can't toggle it. I'd agree that Sudoku is way better, though :P

ah, that's good. My play button used to be kinda sticky from a crayon that melted on it, so I was wondering if there was still some in there triggering the fire or something.
Ha, sudoku took out 3/4 of the battery in an hour.

Is there a way to get Zune's picks to stop sucking? It's literally proactively picking music I hate.
I mostly listen to: Archers of Loaf, early Pumpkins, Heatmiser, The Wrens
It is suggesting: My Chemical Romance, Papa Roach, Snow Patrol, and Metro Station
That is the opposite of music I enjoy. I seem to have tripped the "15 year old girl" flag somehow.
Why? The iPod classic can't even put out video via the headphone/multi-purpose jack.. That was a deal-breaker for me as I output to TV at least once a week. Plus now with the Zune Pass allowing you to keep 10 tracks a month?

Yeah, and listening to music while playing is rough too. It keeps spinning up and shutting down the HDD on my 120GB. I'm hoping that future firmware versions trim down the battery usage. I can't remember how badly games ate my iPod's battery though, so perhaps it's par for the course.

Yeah, picks are hit or miss, and probably usually miss. Half of mine are stuff I would never listen to. I wish you could start to "teach" it by right-clicking and telling it to never suggest this artist to you again.
True, My pics have been a bit odd lately, but then again, it reads all the music that's played on my account, and since my Dad and Mom both are on my Zune Pass, it gets a bit....random. I've tried training it with (Heartbreak) icon, but it doesn't seem to do much.

I guess that would mess things up a bit.
I tried the heartbreak as well, but it didn't seem to do anything so I stopped. I just put a post on the Zune forums for the marketplace to request this functionality. As well as the function to sort artists/albums alphabetically in the marketplace. To have to browse by popularity (without other options) is just plain stupid. I mean, I would use it occasionally to find new music, but when I'm looking for something in particular it is annoying.
The channels are better, though. Still no great, but better.
I've basically used the Zune feature of looking up album info and finding out their influences or whom they influenced. Been surprisingly pleased thus far.
I agree, the mixview is a very nice piece of software, hehe, a bit like Wikipedia of music. I really think Zune needs to step up it's marketing or something, it's got a lot of features that beat Apple. But then again, I'm over in India and don't really watch TV....Is there any more advertising that you've noticed?

The picks system uses the "people who like this song, also like this song as well" method of recommendations. I don't think it factors "obscurity of the band" into its algorithm. ;-)
It's the type of system that I screw up by having both Jonathan Coulton, children's music, and Avril Lavigne in my playlist. I'm thinking of also adding some gangster rap in there so the results start to get really surreal.

I've seen maybe three Zune commercials ever. They really ought to advertise at least as much as they do for the 360 if not as much as Apple does for the iPod.
I actually heard a zune commercial on the radio here (canada) the other day, not an "X store is having a sale on zunes" but an actual zune commercial. Which has to be the first time i've ever heard an mp3 player commercial in that form. of course it just made me all the more bitter as when i bought my zune I was expecting them to launch the marketplace here at some point in the near future..which did not and does not look like its happening
Looks like they've just launched a television campaign pushing the 3.0 software revision and improved Zune Pass (10 free songs a month). Seen this commercial a few times in the last 24 hours on cable.
Hehee, good for them, they gotta show off their strengths (Mixview, Zunepass, Backwards compatibility) and downplay their weaknesses (Lack of 3rd party support.) I had a hell of a time finding a decent Zune Docking station/player thing.
Here's hoping that some real competition starts up. I'm not a fan of Apple, but I do know that when you start really competing, that's when the cool stuff starts happening, see "Rock Band vs. Guitar Hero".

That reminded me of those PS3 commercials. While interesting, I can't say I appreciate commercials that don't even show me the product or tell me what it does.

1. I don't even use the video out.
2. I don't use Zune Pass. I like having physical copies.
3. I got tired of my Zune constantly freezing and having the touch pad occasionally go out, which has happened on more than one of mine.
4. Genius is so fucking awesome and completely satisfies the ADD child in me.
5. Third party support. I want to be able to easily find a good pair of dockable speakers or an alarm clock.
6. It's kinda annoying always having to teach your friends how to work the damn device.
I could make one of those annoying posts where I single out every point you made and then reply below it with some smarmy comeback, but I won't. However I will say that my response to number 6 would have been "get new friends" so that will probably give you an idea of what the whole thing would have looked like.
Seriously though, of any iPod product you went with the Classic? If I was going to backstab the Zune like you did I would at least get some kind of hardware upgrade and spring for the Touch.
To be fair, every one of my friends, who I give my Zune to, has to be "taught" how to use it. It's a combination of thinking the click-wheel is a scroll wheel (Everyone does that) and being worried they're gonna break it. Most people won't just pick up someone else's gadget and start fiddling.
And I have to agree with number 5...Zune has crappy 3rd party support. If it's not a iPod, companies aren't intrested. Hehe, it's like the built in iPod docks they're making in cars now. A bit short sighted, I think, but eh...

I was mostly being sarcastic, those are pretty good reasons. For the most part, they're irrelevant to me but I can see how they'd be important to others. I use my cell phone as an alarm clock. My car has an auxillary jack in the center console that my Zune 30 drives easily. I have Zune Pass and love it. Freezing is very infrequent and easily fixed if you know all the key combos. Almost completely the opposite.
Still man...we're the underdog here. When you give up on the struggle, you give up on all of us. Or something. Damn, that's be an awesome marketing campaign...."Zune: Not just a music player, a collective"
One of those rumors that won't ever die—the Zune phone—is now being touted by a reputable, legitimate news organization, CNBC. Jim Goldman (the guy that interviews Steve Jobs on CNBC after every Apple event) says that according a "good source," Microsoft is "ready to give a major facelift to the company's Zune music player that could mean its evolution into a new smart phone from the company." The project is codenamed Pink and "will combine the company's Zune and technology from Microsoft's purchase of Danger Inc." Update: If this rings a bell, it's because others have, in the past, referred to Microsoft's mysterious consumer smartphone initiative as "Pink" or "Purple and Pink"
This has actually been the consistent beat on the drum for at least seven months, with Microsoft itself dropping hints that it wanted to combine Danger's consumer-friendly OS expertise with the Zune. You know what? It actually makes us pretty excited. A ZunePhone made by Danger might be the Microsoft smartphone we've been really waiting for.
