I have a friend who's willing to sell me a premium 360 with 12 games (all but one are regular Xbox though + a few XBLA ones) VGA cable and I think 2 extra controllers for 300$ The thing is, he got it used at some going out of business sale where I think it was the display.
Plus he said he had some guy open it up and do some clamp mod? (I think that's what it was all I know is it is used to prevent GPU overheating) As you can gather I'm hesitant to jump on this seeing as I'm pretty sure it's a launch 360 with no warranty because it's been opened. Should I take a chance? Is it possible it could still be covered under warranty?
Even if it did break it would be cheaper to have MS repair it then go buy another one is my thinking. Anyway I'm just not sure what to do hence the post.
I'm 100% sure opening it up and doing modifications immediately invalidates it's warranty. It's a good deal, but it has it's risks.
If it were me, I would take the chance as it sounds like a good deal, and well worth the risk.
But then again, $300 really isn't a lot to me. I guess you have to ask yourself "Is $300 a lot?" and "Is it worth risking $300 for a game system that I could buy new for $X more?"
I would be hesitant if all but one are original Xbox. If you want to play original Xbox games, you could probably buy an original Xbox with more games than that for that price.
You, most likely, want 360 games. You also want something that is guaranteed to have a warranty so this $300 has less of a chance of just being basically thrown away if this thing breaks next week and MS says you are out of luck because of the modding.
I say find a good deal on a 360 bundle, Dell usually has the 360 Premium and Gears of War for $400, or the Premium and an extra controller, or 12 months of live, for $400. It is an extra hundred, but you still end up with at least one 360 game (which is what it sounds like you would get from your friend), plus, it has a full warranty, and is all yours.
Another idea, if you know anyone that works for an EBGames or Best Buy or a large number of others stores, have them sign up for the Microsoft Retail Zone. You can get a 360 Premium, Gears of War, and Viva Pinata for $388! That is only $88 more than buying from your friend, and you get two 360 games.
That is the way I would go if you can get someone.
With the 30% failure rate I was reading about a warranty is a must. I'll call 4myxbox and see what they say. If I'm not covered then I think I might want to reevaluate the deal.
The main reason I like the deal is I get the accessories that saves me a lot of money, plus I could put the games on goozex and swap'em for a few 360 games or maybe some PS2 .
I think it depends on how much an out of warranty repair costs really. if it's not cheaper than doing the deals you guys mentioned then I'm better off saving my money.
Ok the 4myxbox guy said if I had the three rings of death I'm fine anything else it's 140$. So, yea it's too great of a risk. Thanks for the advice everyone.
I'm pretty sure he's incorrect. Generally opening the box will void any warranty.
Right, especially if the cooling was altered. Even if it was actually made better, that does not matter, anything that changes the manufacturers design will void the warranty.

It's a good deal, if the system was un-modded and had a warranty. The failure rate of the 360 is just too high to risk tossing $300 into a furnace.
