I've used VirtualDub to encode video for a number of years and have never had a problem. Now I've got a new PC with a new video capture card, and I just can't get it to work. It locks up my entire PC about 2 minutes after going into Capture mode.
So I'm looking for a different program that can do basically the same thing Vdub can.
My specs if interested: Windows XP, Intel Core2Duo (forgot which one exactly...) an Asus P5N32 mobo, and an ATI TV Wonder 550 capture card. My video card, if it matters, is a GeForce 7950gtx.

Lets see, off the top of my head... VLC might be able to do what you want, Windows Media Encoder too (but you're limited to Windows Media Video), you also might want to try something like VirtualDubMod.

Congrats on your new all powerfull computer. I have had good experiences with a commercial application called ChrisTV Professional. your 550 comes with a hardware mpeg encoder which can be used, instead of your CPU, to encode directly to DVD or VCD.
Also, with the right codecs, you can save your recordings to Divx or Avi.

VirtualDubMod and versions of VirtualDub older than the two or three most recent ones give me this wacky error message:
I've googled this up and have found some stuff from 2002 telling users to install an alternate driver, but I can't find this driver and frankly, I don't know if five year old advice applies.
Fantasma, I'm going to check out ChrisTV. Thanks for that suggestion.
Have you considered to uninstall the card, clean the registry, and re-install?. If after doing this ChrisTV does not work, you may copy and paste the log created by the application in the forum section, Chris, the author of the application helped me in the past with an exotic hardware mpeg encoder that was not recognized.

The most powerful video encoding tool, in my opinion, is Avisynth. It has no GUI, and is all scripting, but basically, all you need is Notepad and any decent media player (I like Media Player Classic). I highly recommend it, and I usually use it in conjunction with VirtualDubMod (but you don't need to).

Does Avisynth capture video from a TV card?, as far as I know it doesn't.

That error message got me thinking that there's got to be something running in the background that's trying to control the card. So I went through MSConfig and disabled any Startup items that I didn't recognize or know exactly what it did. I then rebooted and immediately turned off my antivirus, and went into Task Manager and killed all three iPod processes (iPod Helper, iTunes, and Apple Mobile Device I think they were called).
I was then able to capture video all night long, encoding to Xvid on the fly. Life was good.
So I guess it'll be a process of elimination to discover just what was doing it. Or maybe I was just lucky, as I have had one successful capture session amid all my lockups before doing this troubleshooting.

Whoops forgot about that . For the video capture, I don't really know what to say, mainly because I have never used it.
