Room organization help

So here's the backstory:

Due to some mix-up in my college aid, I've moved back into my old room at my parents house for the next year. After 3 years of living out of my own apartment, I've collected alot of junk. And my old room has around 18 years of collected junk from my childhood. And just looking at everything, I have no clue where to start. Anybody got any suggestions about how to go about this?

    It's quite simple.

Go through your room. Make a throw out pile and a keep pile.

Look at each item and class it under the following categories. Do I use this regularly? Does it have large sentimental value. If no to both is it small enough not to take up space?

Also ask yourself is the value of storing this item not using it compared to buying a new one when you finally do need one.

Rent some storage space or start getting rid of stuff. Really don't think theres much more you can do then that.

get some of those drawers you can roll under a bed.

The higher you make your bed, the more crap you ca put under it.

Also get some boxes, label them, and put stuff in it

Have a yard sale. Sell some of the stuff you know you don't need but think someone might want. You could also give some of the stuff to goodwill if you don't think its worth anything and don't want to keep it and feel bad about just throwing it out, theres always someone that might want it.

I agree with MoSiAc. Go through your stuff you might be suprised about what you actually end up wanting to keep. Then I would have a yard sale - what you don't sell donate it. Or just donate it in general. That way you're not just tossing your stuff - and you might make a few bucks off of it. Those plastic drawers are a lifesaver! You might get some plastic tubs to put your stuff in and see if you can talk your parents out of some basement/garage space.

It's all about efficency, and making it look less cluttered. Plastic bins and drawers are good, any kind of organizer really. You can also buy organizer type things that hang off the back of your door. It's good for storing small stuff. I have some of the same problems you have, and I've found that by putting lots of stuff in organizers or in drawers, you can keep a lot of stuff, but make it look like there is very little.

One example for me is the fact that I have about 100 games sitting on my TV/console stand, but you would have no idea because they are all in organizer type things. There are none showing at all. It makes it look a lot less cluttered that way, and I still have easy access to everything.

First off, thanks for the advice. I've taken your guys ideas and ran with them.

Second off, here's an update: I did what Blanket suggested. I took everything out my room and added it to the pile of stuff from my apartment. Then I went through that huge pile that took up two rooms and quickly divided it up into stuff that I might want and stuff that I defiantly didn't want. I then gave that pile to my mother (who volunteers with the salvation army) and she's now going through it to find out what I should donate and what I should just throw away. And now I'm going through the pile of stuff that I might want with a keener eye, so that I can categorize it, and also see if I really want it.

Sounds like you're on a good track.

I use a slightly different method: I take all the objects I use every day/week (with regularity!) and organize those in the room and look at how much space I have left.

From there I start going through the "want to keep" pile within those parameters.

Otherwise, it's the same--and you probably have more storage flexibility than I do.

Actually, my storage flexibility is actually quite nill... I think my parents are turning into the Collyer Brothers. (Wikipedia article about them.) So I need to get all my stuff in my room. How do you guys have your computer and gaming area set-up? Any suggestions on what to do with my old SNES stuff that I want to keep, but don't use that often and also how to deal with the loads of game CDs?
