I started playing this game last week and it's amazing, it's easilly one of my fav RPGs on the PS2. I love the battle system and Alicia is one of my favourite heroine ever. Also, it's nice to have an actually challenging (but not cheap) RPG for a change.

gameplay got stale kinda fast and the story started to suck halfway through. never finished it, and i doubt i ever will.

battle system was neat for a while though, and the graphics are pretty damn awesome.

Great game, I completed it about 4 times :)

    Combo vid!

Might not want to watch past 2:45 if you haven't completed the game yet (final boss identity spoilers starting at about 2:50)

How long is the game? And how long do I have to watch the beginnning or go through useless crap before I can start playing the game?

I've heard the game is also more complicated than it needs to be - how true is this comment?

Game itself is...40 hours maybe? It seems to vary quite a bit, actually. I've heard anywhere from 30-60 for a first timer. Of course, the speedrun clocks in at like 2 and a half hours.

There's not much bullshit at the beginning. You'll have already killed plenty of stuff within the first 30 minutes.

Might be more complicated than it needs to be. The mechanics can be pretty deep, but you can get by without knowing that much. Or you can dive into the mechanics and boost your damage output by crazy amounts (edit: not recommended until 2nd playthrough or bonus dungeon of first playthrough...it'll likely overpower you otherwise).

Cool, thanks for the information, Marty.

I enjoy many different kinds of RPGs: Odin Sphere, GrimGrimoire, FFXII, Super Paper Mario, Shadow Hearts 2, Twillight Princess for the console systems.

I've found it $29.99 at Bestbuy. Should this definitely be a buy or is it better to spend $39.99 on Okami?

    Houk. Snuggle puss. Kitty muffin.

    It's over.

I want your crap out of my apartment and my U2 mix tape back.

The biggest complaint I had with the game is that there wasn't much of a gap between knowing how to game the system, where things became a legitimate challenge and having no clue whatsoever, where you were stuck grinding until you figured out the tricks. Luckily, I nailed the former pretty quickly, and the later game, with Blue Gale and Dismantle... hilarious times.

Well, it's up to you. I can't compare it to Okami because I never played Okami for various reasons (not worth getting into here).

One other thing - the story in VP2 is kind of slow for a while. Chapters 1 and 2 are decent. Chapter 3 is long and there's not much story in it. Things don't pick up til the very end of chapter 3. However, once things do pick up, the story is pretty decent. It's not your typical JRPG by any means.

    Did you play VP1?

I did, I was able to make it to the final dungeon but I never completed it.. it was so long ago than I forgot most of the story for that game

Right now I'm in early chapter 4 with 21 hours on the clock.. how long do I still have to go?

Oh, then the last two chapters won't make much sense, since it practically requires you getting the A ending in VP1.

A decent amount. I think the rest of the game is about as long as chapter 3 was...maybe a dungeon or two less.

I think the A ending from VP 1 is helpful for understanding the end of this game, but isn't crucial. Maybe you could find the A ending sequence cutscenes on youtube or something. You want all the cutscenes along the A ending path, btw, not just the ending itself.

Uh, the droprate for almost everything is 15%. The drops are based on the parts you break. If you're doing the exact same combo every single time and breaking the same parts, other than random motion from you being slightly off in your timing, you're going to get the same things every single time. Plus, later in the game, you get items that change the drop rate to 100% if you match up all the digits of your HP, which is easy enough to do with poison and a little math and makes harvesting stuff simple, though really, an archer, Blue Gale, and Dismantle are all you need most fo the time.

Chapter 4 is a bit of wankery honestly. Chapter 5 is one relatively short dungeon and then two absolutely massive ones. Chapter 6 is just one massive dungeon as well. And then there's the Seraphic Gate post-game dungeon... which is a trial unto itself.

I hear that you can beat the game in well under 6 hours if you know what you're doing... I remember a guy documented a method for getting through the game in 3 hours of gameplay, and believed that there were still numerous optimizations possible.

I need to find the links for that stuff.

Game has beauty + battle system where 3D actually means something, and that's a huge win to me already. It threw away a lot of the innovative elements of the first game, sadly. Still worth playing through though, I think.

Not too surprising. I'm pretty sure you can obliterate a lot of time in the 2:45 one by taking the 30 second aside to pick up Celes and then abusing the fuck out of the RNG and Dismantle. Or any of the transfer items too I guess. It's kind of funny how few bosses are immune to transfer/instadeath attacks until near the end.

Then good news! There's the Seraphic Gate which will kick your ass mercilessly and a series of progressively harder modes every time you beat the game! Though the jump between Normal and the second run through is the most drastic.

Yeah the Seraphic Gate just showed up on my map.. I stupidly ventured inside, only to get my ass kicked by the girl who test if you are worthy of entering the place. Ouch.

And I think I'll pass for the harder difficulty, the game was tough enough for my taste on the first playtrough.. if I play again i'll trick the game into thinking this is my 1st playtrough.

And at the same time I want to find out what happens in the end, and i'm afraid I wont like it

I would like to say that this game has been quite difficult for me, to the extent that it's becoming quite the turn off. I really want to push through, and I'm about 4 hours in, at the Ice Caves (I can't quite remember the correct term), should I push through?

Is the story worth my while?

I take it you're at the temple on the lake from the description you're giving.. that's the most difficult part of the game IMO, I had less problems in chapter 4-5 than in the 3rd one.
