Hi, I just recently found the last disks to BF 2, so I install it and waited 5 hours for the update.
So now i'm all updated and such, but I always get kicked from servers saying your ping is too high.
What exactly is ping, and how do I improve it?
This is a very fun game and would like to be able to play it efficiently.
ping is a measure of how fast your computer sends information to the game server and back, from how you describe your situation....are you using dial-up internet? if so you should know that game is meant for broadband internet only (cable, dsl).
Have you tried restarting your modem? Sometimes it just kind of.. slows down. If you're on wireless, maybe you have a weak signal.
Opening ports shouldn't be a problem, I think Battlefield 2 actually does this for you. Is someone on the same Internet network as you downloading songs or movies or something? That's often the number one perpetrator for bad pings.. someone else on your network (a roommate, a family member, etc.) is hogging up your bandwith.
Well my dad is a photographer, and he sends photographs through internet quite regularly.
Which means I can't use internet at all.
I'll see if I can free up bandwidth, by the way, what is a good fast ISP?
I'm using earthlink right now and frankly I don't like it.
try running a bandwidth test online, just go to google and type in "bandwidth test" go with any of the first few hits. If you are getting a good rating on speed then your problem is likely localized to Battlefield (ports or firewall as Black Ice mentioned) Do you have a high ping on other video games? Also, are you sure that you computer can handle running the game? If your unsure, post your system specs here in the thread and we can be of more assistance.
I hear that Cable is faster than DSL but I don't see how (if someone with more knowledge wants to elaborate I'm sure that'd be great for the OP as well as me). I have Earthlink as well Demon.
It's $30-40 a month, how much are the rest of you guys paying for your connections? With a faster connection often comes a higher price tag. Weretaco, you look like you're on T3. Argus, you look like you're on some kickass DSL or Cable.
At home on DSL we get about 1mbit down/0.5 up for $40/month on DSL (Telus)
Moving this weekend and back to cable and it's 10mbit down, 1 up for $55/month (Shaw)
Argus, you look like you're on some kickass DSL or Cable.
Not entirely sure because my parents pay for it (still in HS, yay free internet!); all I know is the company Cox Communications, it's cable, and it's either the second best or the best internet connection they have.
There are times, however, where I'll lose connection to the internet for various amounts of time, mostly for a few seconds, but sometimes going for several minutes to where I have to manually reset the modem, .
But during peak hours for internet usage in my area, it would go slower than dial up and even cut out completely. After that I decided to go with Verizon wireless DSL.
It's not perfect, but I like it much better than cable.
So, there's definitely a better Internet out there for you. I'd recommend DSL for the same reasons others here are. Speed is more consistent, no connection drops, no sharing with the neighbors.
I've been using DSL for about 4 years, and I've loved every minute of it.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?
Here's what I got and I could play BF2 absolutely fine.
Note that my internet can't supply anything faster in my street (Live in Australia, Telstra is a shit company) but I was still able to play BF2 with no qualms.
Well, if it's playable on poor connections, you do need to select a server that you're close to. When you see the server listing, you need to pick a server with a low ping time. There's a column in the server listing with latency (ping) listed. Don't choose anything that is higher than 100-150 ms. If you're trying to join a server that you already have a bad connection to, you'll get dropped as soon as you join. Remember that you can also easily sort by any of the columns, so sort by ping, and it'll list the fastest servers first.

It won't help the Internet be smoother, but it will greatly aid your computer in powering Battlefield 2. It's a very resource-intensive game.. it takes up a ton of memory and the extra RAM will give you more memory.
Shouldnt be too bad upgrading the card, im running a 256 meg shared card right now and I havent had any issues. And yeah, get as much ram as possible :-D
Wow, my internet, which is total shit (barebones Bellsouth DSL, never downloads torrents faster than ~35 kb/s) at the very edge of my wireless range still got 777 kb/s, so your internet must be infuriatingly slow. How much are you paying by the way? You could be getting seriously ripped off if it's anything over $20.
DSL is the same all over, regardless of where you are. I would tell you to consider perhaps upping your allocated bandwith, but frankly it would just be better to go with someone else, like Verizon or AT&T/Bellsouth for your DSL needs. Hopefully you're not contractually obligated right now.

holy hell. is that normal?
on a related note, i had ping problems with bf2 as well. Make sure you close out of any other programs, and just try resetting the router and computer and modem. worked for me after a few times.
dude i don't even know. Nothing ever downloads that fast usually. games have been running retardedly well, though. *shrug*
cox implemented some kind of "powerboost" lately, supposed to speed up download speeds. Guess it's working?

I bet they upgraded the connections in your area in preparation for an increase in customers, and a few years down the road it'll be back to fairly slow speeds.

Am I on the right track?
Getting 11 MBps on internet.

Video Adapter RADEON 9100 IGP (64 MB)
3D Accelerator ATI Radeon 9000/9100 IGP (RS300)
For reference:
I have broadband.
Gah, thats barely enough for VOIP services. Are you guys using that too?
(always thought internet was crap)
and yes i've been using VoIP
Any ideas?
Click on Find Service at the top, then provide your zipcode (assuming you're in the US)

vroomvroom. i'd recommend a new ISP. My dsl at home is poor so I'm switching this weekend to cable.

Well, I definitely need a new computer, would the better RAM in a new computer help internet be smoother?
I'm sure I would get a better chance of getting a better line than out in the suburbs.
