To those who don't know (or forgot), looks like Nintendo had their E3 press conference this morning. They seem to think people Pokebattling on WiFi proves their serious about internet play, I disagree. I fail to see why I can't play Wii Sports or Virtual Console games with friends online. Anyway, I'm reading a summary and thought I'd just give a heads up, even though there's not any Pokenews (I hope that's okay, and I want Dragon Quest :( ).

EDIT: [9:45] Iwata hypes up new DS cookbook software available in Japan, and says he uses it to prepare dinner for his family, and finds that he forgets his work worries when he's chopping onions. (me: ?!?)
Nintendo has the crappiest online system out of the big 3.

Seriously. Sony's is better. And Sony's doesn't even really EXIST.

I agree. Even with Pokemon there's more they could have done. GTS could be much better, and even though I haven't done online battles it seems like they could have done a lot more there. I bought Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles used without doing any research and was disappointed to see that I couldn't play it unless I had someone to play with. I hope the new one and Dragon Quest IX have the brains to allow online play since they're doing the whole "one character to one player" thing.

[10:13] The game calculates Reggie's BMI as 27.51, and then calls him "overweight" and adapts his Mii to fit. (me: Hey now, no one wants their Mii to reflect their real selves too much!)

Well, it is a simple way to view your progress. Having a Snorlax looking Mii might make you feel bad when you start but you'll feel that much better when your mii later looks like a Machoke/Gardivoir.

Hey, this is a pokemon thread :p

The Snorlax Mii could Self Destruct though, that's something you'd lose then if you got skinnier.

A shiny won't get you the best IVs, though. They're just nice. So their purpose is just to brag about them.

    A trophy, it's just "hey look what i did/what i can do"
it also looks cool, and people may say looks mean nothing, but they do mean something, some people don't use pokemon simply because they don't like how they look (i think Zero has done this)

you get compliments for getting cool shinies, especially if they're usable

I was very upset when my cool shiny grey/blue Tyrogue (caught on the third radar hit, amazingly; of course, I was looking for Seviper) evolved into an ugly shiny pea soup-green Hitmonlee. :(

I think most shinies looks stupid. I'd use a shiny Rapidash, though. Those are great.

Yeah, I can't wait to evolve my pretty blue-flamed Pontya, even if it does have Run Away instead of Flash Fire.

    I can help you Narian.

    From today's PA blog entry:

"So I started digging into serebii.net yesterday and I got my first glimpse at just how far this rabbit hole goes. I told myself I wasn't going to fall into it but I ended up spending the morning trying to acquire a new Chimchar with the preferred "jolly" nature. Once I'd done that I spent the afternoon EV training him on Ponytas and Machamps. I'm telling you this not because I am proud but because I need help. Someone needs to stop me before I start doing long division to figure out what kind of fucking berry I should feed my shittlesaur. "

Exactly how I felt when I learned of the existence of EVs, IVs, and that nature was more than just a word. Now here I am. Every day. In a way I'll be happy when August comes. :P I do hope he got one with the Egg Moves he wanted, because I'd feel bad for anyone who was at that point and found out they wanted Thunder Punch.

shinies should be trophies and i think cloning a shiny is like going to a store and buying yourself a trophy, you didn't really earn it, so it holds no honor

It's a video game. Shinies hold no honor no matter how you obtain them.

At least with a trophy you can say "I was better than a whole lot of other people at this game." With a shiny all you can say is "I wasted 10 hours of my life so that I could get a palette-swap."

Does anyone else want to fight?

I am surprised any person that would put any large length of time into a videogame would say it is "just a game", when these are investments and achievements, when you are working for what you are obtaining

most videogames are not like a card game or a friendly basketball game where you're playing for fun, counterintuitively the main point of videogames often isn't fun, more play for the sense of achievement and challenge not offered by a monotonous day

it might be "just a game" but if you spent 100 hours playing a game, and make about 10 dollars an hour working, that was an oppurtunity cost of about 1000 dollars, and who is to say that whatever value you hold that game save as is worthless

you can say you "Wasted" time, but technically mushroom you wasted however many hours you played pokemon for a little bit of digital information on a cart that ultimately amounts to nothing, that is the parallel you are making, and if someone erased your cart would you say "oh well i put in all that work but at the end of the day it's just a game" or would you see the reality that you lost your investment and achievement, something quite upsetting

You only read like half of my statement there. You said that there was no honor in getting a cloned or hacked shiny. I said that there was no honor whatsoever in getting a shiny period, because it's a freakin' sprite. You show it to someone, they'll say "huh, neat," and that's the end of it. No honor, no nothing.

The time poured into a video game isn't wasted, because it's for fun. If you're shiny hunting because you think it's entertaining, then you're not wasting your time. If you're doing it because you're after some sense of PokeHonor or something, then yes, you're wasting your time. Other than I guess Battle Tower, everything to be accomplished in this game is either

    A) Quick and easy

    B) Long and easy

You're saying that there is no honor in cheating to get the rewards of a long and easy task, implying that there IS honor to be had in completing the long and easy task the ol' fashioned way. All I said was, no, there isn't.

Also I'm back on now, so I would like to fight somebody.

speaking from experience, battling pokemon competitively is fun, and maybe the first time you battle gym leaders or the elite four, but everything else is joy based on achievement, whether it's filling a pokedex or beating the elite four for cash or breeding IVs, EVs, catching shiny pokes, these are all accomplishment based and not very fun-driven

in the case of MMOs, is there anyone that can ever tell me grinding anything is fun, and pokemon, one way or another, is a lot of grinding
