Help me buy my first home stereo

So here's the setup: I am currently a college junior who's been listening to music for the past eight years with my computer and various sets of decent computer speakers. The problem is that they are, of course, computer speakers so they can only sound so good. Before college, I just didn't care that much and once I went to college, I was in a dorm so space was a limiting factor. But I've just recently moved into an apartment so I can expand a little bit.

I recently bought a pair of Sennheiser HD 555 headphones which have served me quite well but they're still being powered by my weak little on-board soundcard -- it doesn't cut it anymore. My question then is where I should start looking for a decent stereo amplifier and a pair of good speakers. I just finished up a research project at my school which provided me with a decent-sized stipend so I have a little bit of cash lying around but at the same time I am, after all, a college student so I have to be somewhat thrifty in my purchases.

If there's some huge thread in Accumulated Forum Knowledge on this (and it seems like there would be but my searches got nothing), feel free to link to it and berate my searching capabilities -- much appreciated.
