Volunteering for the environment

I've become a more environmentally conscious person recently, and I've decided that I want to make a difference by volunteering in some sort of program to give back to the Earth. But I'm not sure how I would find such a program. Without disclosing my location, is it possible for someone to refer me to a website or somewhere in my area where I could find a listing of programs I could volunteer in?

www.lonelyplanet.com has a pretty decent listing in their volunteering section. A lot of it might be more humanitarian stuff, but I know there's some environmental stuff as well.

Don't waste your time on save-the-whales bullshit, or anything that requires you to harass people on the street for money. In an urban area, things like city farms and park restoration groups are pretty good. Really depends what's in your area, though.

The Cat has very good advice there. "Activism" usually just means "give us a signature and some money". Bleh.

If you live in an area that is less urban, however, try to find a local watershed council or resource conservation district that needs volunteers.

There also mght be some food co-ops or volunteer nursey farms you could put some time into.

I figured it's not worth making a new thread for, but for an entirely unrelated question:

Where is a legal, trustworthy website I can purchase NiN's Pretty Hate Machine album? Itunes doesn't have it.

I think there's some funky licensing issues with who actually owns it these days...are you trying to just buy a digital copy, or would a "real" copy work as well?

I would like a digital copy since I'm too lazy to go out and find it, and I'm sure it's not an easy album to come by (is it?). Of course, a hard copy means I don't have any risk of losing the data, so I don't know.
