In case you're just logging onto the Internet for your first time on your Circuit City HP computer that came with a free month of CompuServ internet access, you know what SomethingAwful is. In case you don't for whatever reason, its a rather unfunny 'humor' site. Why they call it humor is beyond me because honestly it's really not that funny. All any of its 20,000+ users go there for is its enormous and grossly abusively moderated forums. What this stupid thread is going to discuss is the overall gayness of SomethingAwful and why it is just lame.
In case you can't tell, yes, I was recently banned from SA. I won't provide my username as I'm sure the mods here are in some sort of alliance with SA and can find me out easily enough. Regardless, I'll enlighten everyone on why I was banned after I explain SA's rule scheme.
For starters, before you are allowed to post/view SA's forums, you're required to pay a one-time fee of $10. This fee is primarily for the astronomical bandwidth bills that go along with 20,000 odd users and the sheer amount of traffic the site gets, and partially to deter bots, spammers, and other forms of wretched life on this earth. Secondly, its how SA's frontman Richard 'Lowtax' Kyanka makes a living. Thats right, even though I'm sure Gabe and Tycho have other real jobs, SA's Lowtax makes a livable income off his website alone, which is pretty respectable I guess.
The reason I was banned from the forums was 'Mod Sass'. Would you like to know what qualified as mod sass? Typically it's anytime you talk back, harass, ridicule, or otherwise disagree with one of the forums mods/admins. You're not allowed to have a different opinion from a mod or question why they do certain things. If you do, you're BANNED. This is what happened to me. I called out a particularly stupid mod on how he didn't know the forum rules that he was supposed to be moderating. It clearly states in SA's forum rules that account sharing is strictly bannable for accountability reasons and because Lowtax is a greedy loser. God forbid not everyone pay their way into the 'last mature and troll free internet community around'. Anyway, some idiot in a thread of mine admited to a friend using his account to post a reply in my thread, then I jokingly say 'Banned for account sharing' and moved on.
Not quite. The stupid mod comes on and says that it's not bannable if both parties have accounts, and tells me this bit of misinformation with some choice words usually reserved for the bane of society forum FYAD. Needless to say, they were less than kind. So, I nicely pointed out the error in this mod's logic and even provided a direct link to the rule about account sharing and how it stated no such stipulations. A few posts later I'm banned for calling out an ignorant mod by one of SA's fagmins.
SA has become an utter shithole since about mid 2003. It started when idiot savant and insecure homosexual Spokker Jones was given administrator status for whatever reason. He then goes into the forum FYAD, well known for the regular rules not applying to it (save for the painfully evident shit like child porn, buying/selling drugs etc..) and started banning people for shit he didn't like. Thats right, he started to initiate RULES in a RULELESS society. What a faggot.
Another enormous flaw in the site is the admin or fagmin squad as I like to call it. These people are simply power hungry and love to inflate their egos knowing they are encouraged to ban people at the drop of a hat in hopes they'll re-register and give Lowtax more ten bucks. This problem was made ever more easier for the admin team when the 'Mad Moderators' forum was established and expected to be followed per letter.
Essentially, the Mad Moderator forum was a forum where the mods and admins of SA would post about trends they saw in the forums that annoyed them. They'd post about how they want to stop seeing such trends and why. Ok, thats no problem really, until the fagmins got their way. When the fagmins started posting their pet peeves and grievences in there, they started to become unwritten hip pocket rules. Do something one of the mods/fagmins didn't like and you were banned for 'ignorance of the rules', which is another lazy catch-all rule. The users are SERIOUSLY expected to read all 20+ pages of 20+ mods bitches and gripes and not do them. On top of the standard forum rules, users are now expected to memorize what little nit-picky thing pisses off every mod and fagmin on the forum. Please...
Near the end, I had pretty much stopped posting all together, save for a few original threads where I asked some questions about guns. I stopped because it was just becomming too dangerous to post. After the all SA merchandise I bought and other money I blew on petty shit just to make Lowtax richer, I can honestly say I really didn't want to get banned and lose all that money, though I had virtually nothing to show for it. Sadly, I did get banned for politely proving a mod wrong. Said mod then got his ego hurt and cried to a fagmin in their private forum, who in turn got me banned.
In closing, I would like to reiterate one fact: Something Awful is run by greedy pathetic assholes, uneducated hypocrates, and the egotistical mentally retarded. The front page is not funny and the community is pretty lacking also.
