Graphics card problem.

I don't play advanced PC games. I've given up that route. However there are some great 2d games I've been trying to play, specifically Introversion Software's morbid strategy game DEFCON and the Touhou Project series, the finest series of shumps I've ever had the pleasure of being raped by.

I had some 200 dollar Nvidia card that worked great considering these games minimal requirements, but I was in a bind so I exchanged it for a cheaper card, an ATI Radeon x1050 Catalyst.

When I run games, completely at random, (2 to 10 minutes in) the framerate will crash to around 10 FPS. Quitting the game immediately makes the computer quick again, and I could start playing again immediately if I felt like it. I usually just shut off the computer because I don't feel like waiting for the menus to load during the crash.

I don't want to have to buy another card. I think this card just may need some tweaking or something so those crashes don't happen. Does anyone have some suggestions?

Also, does it matter that it recommends an AGP x 16 slot and it's in an AGP slot? I wouldn't think so since the previous nVidia card worked okay.

I think the card might be overheating. Checking the temperatures (or see if the fan works properly) might give a clue.
That's all I can think of. Could also be driver issues ofcourse.

This card doesn't have a fan, just what I think is a large heatsink (pointy metal.)

Okay, might still be worth checking the temperature when it's doing something graphically intensive (or something)

    here are some options:

#1 Make sure you have the latest drivers. This is a must. (with ATI cards, always uninstall your graphics drivers before installing new ones.

#2 Close ALL processes and applications (all your little systray crap), any firewalls, virus scan, ANYTHING else other than needed system process and try playing.

#3 Try running your computer with the case wide open. I used to have a 6800GT and it would overheat in the summer so i opened my case up and it ran fine. This is not a permanent solution, this is really just to see if heat is the issue. You might try running a fan near your computer to cool it. The main thing we're trying to do is determnine if heat is the issue. If it is, well, that's a different story with other solutions.

#4 Buy nVidia, wtf are you doing with ATI. /fanboi

try that, and let us know what's up!

Even if your motherboard doesn't support AGP x16, I think it can still run the card at x8 or x4, so you should be okay.

It sounds to me like you're encountering driver conflicts. Even if you've uninstalled your previous nVidia drivers, there's still a surprising amount of left over driver-crap that hangs around. I suggest following the steps I outlined in this thread, only instead of going from ATi to nVidia, you'll obviously be going the other way. There's a little work involved, but if you're still having trouble after this, you'll know it's more serious than a driver issue.

The computer has a 2 day old hard drive in it, so nvidia drivers are no longer an issue. I'll probably never get an ATI card again though (or a card with no fan.)

I suppose I can try the no case thing for a little while, but that's gonna creep out my family.

I can't believe I'm having this much trouble with such simple games! I guess my computer cant handle the awesomeness of Touhou and Introversion.

Dude, check the overheating issue first, if it runs too hot get a replacement or get new cooling for the card. If your computer doesn't meet minimum requirements for the game (Which shouldnt be too high) upgrade :D
