I recently purchased a transformer that has a horribly stupid paint job (Basically nerf-blaster megatron). I would like to repaint him, preferably to a more gray/silver color scheme, with some black and red thrown in. I have read in a few places that it would be good to use acrylic paints (if anyone has a better suggestion I am open to it), but is there anything I need to do to the plastic before hand. Also, is there anything i need to avoid/watchout for while using acrylic paints (like fumes or staining?). And finally, is there anything specially I need to watch out for when using certain colors of acrylic paint?
Any pointers on technique, such as whether or not to apply base-coats, which colors to use for base coats, general painting knowledge would also be helpful.
Wasn't there just a thread on painting consoles? Somebody linked to some chemical that apperantly reacts directly with the plastic changing it's color and not adding a layer of paint potentially throwing off the delicious clockwork of whatever you're painting.

It's a link to a thread on a nerf modification page about paints to use on plastics. They seem to fancy Krylon Fusion and Vinyl Dye.
Hope that helps.
