Internet Bandwidth

Alright... I just moved house and set up the net here, I'm completely broke so I chose the cheapest option available to me, which is capped at a measly 5GB per month. I know that's small when you look at playing games, watching porn or downloading songs/movies or whatever, but put simply... i don't do any of those thingss. So i thoguht "a couple of hours a day checking email, browsing forums, online shopping etc" would be fine with 5GB... so it turns out 2 weeks into the month and i've already used nearly 7GB? i'm at a loss to see how i've used that much :S does normal browsing really download that much rubbish these days? should i be choosing the option to not display images etc on forums? I'm really confused about this.

tl:dr - what can I do to try and keep my bandwidth usage low?

    Do you have wireless? Have you checked your PC is free of spyware/viruses? Do you watch stuff on youtube?

    wireless - yes
    pc is free of spywayre - yes, i'm anal about it
    youtube - maybe 3 or 4 music videos over the 2 weeks

    Seriously unless you download a couple of full tv shows weekly you will yawn through 5GB.

    ah shit. I'll be honest, i just installed the modem out of the box with it's default settings, i'm so tired at the moment that i plain up forgot until you said that.

    I'm not actually using the pc that's supposed to be wirelessly connecting at the moment, so i've just gone into the setup on the router and disabled WLAN. That should be enough until I'm ready to start messing about with the encryption and MAC filter and whatnot right?

    Yes. I use netmeter to see what ive downloaded on this comp, u would be surprised how much things like online videos are. Also i use Opera browser which shows how much is DLing on each page in the staus bar. These should help you easily monitor what you are DLing and when

    Yeah, I've only got 4GB between two people, and it usually lasts us three weeks at least. Sounds like you've battened down the hatches, though, so :^:
