TV/Monitor help needed

Ok, my brothers birthday is fast approaching. What I was thinking was giving him my old computer (he doesn't have one), and a new flat screen monitor. His room is quite small, and he has a tv but its a CRT which is quite huge for his small room. He barely has enough room to do his homework because the tv is on his desk, the only real viable place to put it.

Ok, here is what I want to do. Dispose of the old tv. Sell it or whatever.

1) Now I want to be able for him to watch tv AND use the computer on the same monitor. I am guessing I need to install a tv tuner card? Can I buy an external one?

2) Does the computer need to be on for him to watch tv?

3) He plays xbox and gamecube on the tv. The monitor needs components, right? He will NOT be playing computer games, only xbox and gamecube, so 1080p is overkill. 480p would be great, although I'm sure monitors don't go that low.

4) Would it be easier to buy a LCD TV and just hook it up so that you can also view the computer screen with it? Problem is that I dont want him to have to have the computer on all the time just to watch tv. The room is small and its gonna get hot in there quickly.

It also seems that a lot of monitors don't come with component inputs which would be a problem.

We use monitors at work that are also televisions. I think it's got 2 analog computer video inputs, your average tv inputs and a tuner. You just select the source, so you wouldn't have to have the computer on to use it. You can even do picture in picture. It works pretty well for tv inside of the pc window, but not so much the other way around. If you're interested I'll go see what model they are.

Yeah, thats sounds great. Biggest worry was having the computer on. Also that it has inputs is GREAT.

    Anyone know of anything else?

We used to use a Samsung 150mp.

When that went out, we switched to one without the pc input, as we didn't really need that part anymore. It's older, but it looks like you can get more modern ones. We liked that one because we needed it to be small (it's just 15"), but you can get 17" and 19" versions. There may be others out there that are better, it's just what we used.
