Yeah, this is a bit bizarre, but I've been meaning to look into this. See, I'm a huge fan of steak subs, provided they are prepared "correctly", according to my tastes. I used to absolutely adore the ones from Subway; 12-inch with nothing but bread (Italian or wheat), steak, and occasionally some Parmesan cheese. Whenever my dad got takeout for dinner on the way home, I'd beg for Subway. It got to the point where the people working there basically knew what to make as soon as they saw me or my dad come over to the counter. However, if you've eaten steak subs from Subway, you'll know what made me stop going there.
Lately, they've changed the way the steak is... well, prepared, I guess. It used to be quite similar to what I believe are called "steak ums". (I've never tried those.) Now it's... diced, I guess you could call it. It's like little cubes of meat. Now, I tried eating one like this. I didn't like it at all. I found out this was apparently chain-wide, and was a bit more upset than I probably should have been. I even wrote a complaint to a company for the first time in my life, I was so angry. I got used to it, however. I found other things to eat. Still, I would very much like to have good steak subs again. So my question is this -
Where, in the New England area, specifically the Worcester area of Massachusetts, can I find myself quality steak sandwiches
similar to the old Subway style? Any chains you may know of that serve similar sandwiches, even if you don't know if they are around me, mention them. I'll do the research from there. Also, there is one place to get subs that I love even more than Subway. Whenever I go down to visit relatives in Maryland, I always get steak subs at
King's Kitchen in Royal Farm gas stations. I know that it may sound like the most obscure place to get food, but oh God, those sandwiches are absolutely divine to my taste buds. But I digress, my question has been asked, so I shall end here. Thank you to anyone who can help me satiate my hunger for cow flesh and bread.
TL;DR - Where can I get sandwiches similar to the
old Subway style or
King's Kitchen/Royal Farm steak subs?

Being a Philadelphia native I'm very picky about my steak sandwiches (living in Boston).
they have an awesome beef dip sandwich and a fucking delicious prime rib sub. they also have a beef brisket sub that has good thickness slices of meat. they're all very very good.
Pats, Genos, Tony Lukes, Jims, or Ricks? ;-)
Meh, I think Subway varies a lot more from establishment to establishment. I swore by the Subway by my college till it burned down, but didn't like the ones in my hometown. FWIW, Subway is cheaper and has a wider selection of sub rolls.
It's been three years or so since I moved from there, but if you can find a D'angelo (new england sub shop chain) their steak subs will induce orgasm.
That's true.
But that's only true because Subway doesn't implement the same standardizations as Quiznos does. In Quiznos they weigh your meat and use only good bread and they do it the same way at every store because they are under immense pressure from Corporate. Every quiznos operates the same way, and thats what's good about them.
In Subway it's easy to get people who don't know what the fuck they are doing and drop sandwiches or burn your fucking bread or forget to put gloves on.
It may not be exactly what you are looking for but they make some of the best subs you can get. Simple, delicious sandwiches. The Number 9 is one of man's crowning achievements.
To other people in the thread -- note that his steak subs are exceedingly simple. Personally, I didn't even try the steak subs at Subway until they made them cubed and added peppers, but I've lost interest in Subway since the vegetables are amazingly tasteless and they upped the prices by about $2. They're an OK sub for a $5 "meal." It's not worth $7.
Don't lose hope, OP! The only place listed that you may run into trouble getting a plain steak sub is Quiznos, since their standard sub almost always has veggies and is toasted. However, any of the other places should have no problem delivering your specific sub. Since places change so much depending on region, I'd say it's worthwhile to spend some time calling up or visiting sub places and just asking, "hey what's your steak sub like? Is it sliced or is it chunks like that subway crap?"
Most will happily tell you that their steak subs are not like subway. Then just say you want it on plain white bread with a little parmesan cheese -- no sauces or veggies. It should at least be passable, and you can see what you think about it without spending a lot of money.
I just need to say "w00t" to you because you understand this. Do the ones you go to have those touch-screens you order the sub on? Because those are an absolute dream to me, and they amuse my technology-illiterate grandpa greatly. If I ever feel the need to move, it'll be to that region, if only because of Royal Farms...
For everyone else, thanks for the advice. It looks like D'Angelos will be my first choice for trying, if only because it's really close. Quiznos will be after that, although it's a bit father from me in general and would be harder to get regularly. It's hard for me to do any sub-hunting for real, because my only mode of independent transportation is walking, and a sub-hunt request to my dad would probably elicit a "WTF". He knows how damn picky I can be, so I can imagine he'd liken the trip to a nightmare.
Again, thanks everyone, and I hope I can find my new sub heaven.
Subway is far healthier than Quiznos -- so much so that Quiznos actively refuses to release their nutrition information (scary).
But yeah, sucks about Subway steak sandwiches. I used to love them, but hate the new form.
In the morning ill get the exact name of them
Genos FTW.
I'm a Geno's fan myself. However, some of the better cheesesteaks I had were outside of the city; this place called Dalessandro's (Roxborough) and another place called Rich's Deli (Fort Washington) were better.
I've always been partial to Genos and Dallesandros, the latter only because of convenience (down the street)
