I haven't bothered reading the thread since this has basically turned into meiz and the other group simultaneously spewing viscuous fecal matter all over, but has the fact that hardware sales in themselves are pretty much irrelevant in terms of making a profit aside from guaging how large your install base is been covered?
Anyway, let's enumerate the giant jumps to conclusions made in this thread
1. Due to the warranty extension/RRD/Peter Moore leaving, the xbox 360 will lose money this coming year
2. MS expected to be making money by now
3. MS will ditch the 360 if it continues to lose money and thereby abandon the centerpiece of its strategy to invade the living room and expand beyond the software market
Anybody have others?
Yes:
4. Evangir is a "cunt tard."
5. The rest of us are "dumb dumbs."
6. Meiz has TEH INTELLECT.
Actually, I am both a "cunt tard" and a "dumb dumb."

4.the Wii will be dead by 2008

UK set to get own event instead of X07, says Microsoft

To be held "before Christmas"
Following the news that this year's X0 event has been cancelled, a Microsoft spokesperson has told GamesIndustry.biz that the UK will get its own Xbox 360 event instead.
"X07 is not going ahead," the spokesperson confirmed.
"We're looking at doing something here in the UK. It will be from a UK point of view, not from a European point of view."
According to the spokesperson, the timing for the new UK event is "still to be confirmed". However, he did state that it is set to take place "before Christmas".
News of the X07 cancellation emerged yesterday in a Squad XP podcast. Xbox executive Aaron Greenberg stated, "There is not a real X07 this year, but I think that we will figure out some way to talk about 2008 some time at a different event or a different type of programme."
Microsoft has so far declined to comment on why the decision was taken to cancel X07.
Sounds good to me, since I just fucking drinking tea and all.
Normally I'm all for a good "company X is doomed!" theory but c'mon here. The only reason they said that they expected the 360 to make money this fiscal year was to shine on shareholders. I do fully expect the 360 to more or less break even this console round. Think about it, they expected the PS3 to be serious competition right from the gate instead of a $599 grill with the same damn games on it. They had probably factored in at least one price drop by now to counter the PS3, and yet because of how the current situation is I don't know if they'll ever lower the price on the 360.
Moral of the story, this theory is silly.
So where was this post talking about the PS3's eventual domination? I'd love to see this.
Wow, I just woke up had some breakfast and came on. Shit I thought you guys would have been done by now.
Look, I will be on ventrilo in 30 minutes to an hour and I think I could better explain my stance on the argument with speech rather then text.
But to continue to fuel the fire here are a few other predictions I have come to think will happen.
-Nintendo Wii will be swept under the rug come mid 2008. No one will want one.
-Xbox 360 will announce big loses some time next year in 2008. (if they have not fell yet)
-PS3 will sell way over it's competitors mid to end of 2008 when the price goes lower for the PS2 guys to buy in.
I am not going to bother supporting my arguments with facts or links. It didn't seem to sink in the last time I did it. So lets just see if I turn out to be right about all this crap.
(By the way for the whole 'WHY IS SONY NOT DOOMED IF 360 CAN BE VICIOUS?!?")
The PS3 was built with multiple sources in mind for profit.
-PS1 games (as empty as it is)
-PS2 games (still a large market)
-PS3 games (Starting to build up)
-Blu-Ray movies (looking to be the dominate format for HD) {It's also cheaper then HD-DVD when I looked yesterday}
-Online distribution with bigger titles then what the 360 offers. (Big games that could be sold in a brick and mortar location that are being sold online instead)
Sony does not have as much money as Microsoft, I get that. But Sony has ties with companies in the media industry that Microsoft doesn't. Sony has a big film industry offering that support Blu-Ray and are aiming to make it the standard format for HD content. HD-DVD prices are starting to go higher then Blu-Ray lately (look at 300) and that is going to have a sharp impact on sales. If for any reason Sony fails to deliver with games on the PS3 then the use of the hardware as a Blu-Ray player can back it up. It still seems stupid to me that they put so much in a console when they could have reduced the price by removing the Blu-Ry drive, but it is going to help them in the long run. Sony has more to lose if the PS3 falls so they are going to make damn sure that it keeps up. I don't think Microsoft looks at the Xbox like Sony looks at the PS3.

Theories that the 360 is "teh doomed" and that the MS games division (which I'm a part of) won't be around in 2008 ... are horribly overrated.
And before you ask, no, I don't know why X07 was cancelled (I don't work in marketing or anything). I have a couple of theories why, but it's all conjecture. None of it is of the "omg we're doomed" variety though. Perhaps more like, "Well, shucks, we're in damned good shape for holiday '07 already. Is there really a need to hype games that already hyped to hell?". I would like to see more emphasis on '08 titles, but there are ways to do that beyond hosting X07. As you may know, events are expensive.
Or as people have speculated, maybe there are plans to host something entirely different. *shrug*
Now this is just silly. Sure, I can see the PS3 eventually becoming the go-to all in one media device if all DVD releases suddenly dried up and all past DVD titles suddenly stopped working. That is at least, somewhere in the realm of possibility. Why oh why would the Wii just suddenly dry up in middle '08? I mean, besides the lack of proof you don't even have any precedent for that in the entire history of video games.

It says gamers might abandon the Wii. Not everyone. The Wii will be successful with or without us.

It is still BS. Gamers didn't abandon it for Viva Pinata, Gears of War, Resistance, Oblivion, and every other good looking game on the PS3 and 360.

The fact is, gamers are attracted to beautiful looking games, they always have been...When a game comes out - a game like a Halo or something, something they haven’t seen before - they’ll drop everything and they’ll drop their Wii controllers when it does.
I never truly understood how stupid some Devs were till now. It suddenly all makes sense. They actually think we care more about the graphics then anything else.
Also - I can see the 360 getting a price drop even if the PS3 hangs on to it's suicidal $599 price. I mean, if they can afford a $50-$100 while still turning a profit per system, they will. It'll net them a ton of extra sales and turn this competition into a reinactement of the shower scene from American History X.

Mmmm, I wouldn't call it stupidity. I'd say it's a normal tendency among developers (well, those who care as opposed to those who want to fart out a license game) to want to make their games look as good as possible. It's their babies, their art, after all. And since the Wii is more restrictive than a 360 in the visuals department, I can see how that could rub a proud developer the wrong way.
However, he's making the mistake of thinking what he thinks is the same as what everyone else thinks. And for casual gamers (and hell, plenty of the more dedicated gamers), Wii visuals look fine. My casual gamer friends swear they can't tell a difference between PS2 and Xbox games, after all, and they don't see that big a difference between Wii and 360.

Microsoft Corp.'s fiscal fourth-quarter profit edged up 7 percent, despite a hefty charge to cover the cost of defective Xbox 360 video game consoles.
The world's largest software maker said Thursday its earnings for the three months ended June 30 climbed to $3.04 billion, or 31 cents per share, from $2.83 billion, or 28 cents per share, during the same period last year.
Results were weighed down by an 8-cent charge related to the video game console repairs. Excluding this item, Microsoft would have earned 39 cents per share, in line with Wall Street's expectations, according to Thomson Financial.
Revenue climbed 13 percent to $13.37 billion from $11.80 billion last year, just ahead of Wall Street's estimate of $13.27 billion in sales.
Sales in the division that's responsible for the Windows operating system rose 14 percent to $3.81 billion from $3.35 billion in the year-ago quarter.
For the year, Microsoft posted a profit of $14.07 billion, or $1.42 per share, on $51.12 billion in sales. Analysts were looking for $1.49 per share on $51 billion in sales.
For the fiscal first quarter ending Sept. 30, Microsoft said it expects to earn 38 cents to 40 cents per share on $12.4 billion to $12.6 billion in sales
For full fiscal 2008, the company raised its expectations for earnings per share by a penny, to $1.68 to $1.72 per share, but lowered its revenue forecast to a new range of $56.5 billion to $57.5 billion.
Earlier, Microsoft shares gained 59 cents to close at $31.51, up 1.9 percent. In after-hours trading, they lost 16 cents.

If you're going to comment on the viability of a venture, try to do it in the context of whatever business it's in.
I think that Southwest is in a bad shape and will probably fold in the future, because their business is risky and their profit margins are thin. Does that make sense? It might if I don't look at how other companies in the same field are doing, but it's a pretty worthless statement.
And don't quote numbers without context, because they'll end up meaning very little.
