Where in the "We're spending a BILLION dollars on warranty" do you get that they aren't going to finance the games division? Cause I think it's possible that they could have defeated any class action for a tiny bit less then that if they so needed.
But you should go away now, at least when arguing with Meiz, he has some semblance of logic to back up his crazy doom theory. You aren't fun crazy......you're scary crazy.
It might be noted that the PS3 outsold the 360 just recently. Check that VGCharts place.
If you're talking about weekly sales, that happens when you have a big sale.
I know. I'm just sayin'.
So, it took a major announcement of a price drop, including a bunch of positive press in the mainstream media, to get the the PS3 to outsell the 360 for a single week. Thats a very unenviable place to be in, especially since two days later those same media outlets were running negative stories alluding to the price drop as a possible bait & switch.

To be fair, they're both going pretty slowly. What happened in the PS3's case, however, was a moderately large boost.
Just sayin'. I'm not trying to say anything with it, I'm just pointing the fact out. You people act like I'm screaming doom and gloom too.
I see alot of posts about the new fiscal year being a 'clean slate'. Now, I'm just a forum idiot here, but what the hell does this have to do with anything concerning the health of MS's gaming division? It's not like the billions of dollars lost in previous years magically goes away. The division will have to recoup the money lost in profit before they break even.
Am I misunderstanding the point?

because people keep saying that MS won't see a profit in 08 because of everything that has happened previously. now of course MS wants to start recouping previous costs, but their claim of turning a profit in 08 is feasible because they dont have to factor in previous problems. and if they turn a profit in 08, it's a very good sign for their future prosperity.

I see, I guess I need to go read up on some basic economics. I get that their numbers for '08 can be profitable, thus, spurring growth in the division. I guess this is what I don't understand (using fictional numbers below)
Gamecorp Fiscal '06 posts losses of $500 million
Gamecorp Fiscal '07 posts losses of $1 Billion
Gamecorp Fiscal '08 posts profit of $750 million
Gamecorp then begins production of the playcubebox 2009, while playcubebox 2006 still brings in $250 million (profit)
Gamecorp Fiscal '09 posts losses of $500 million due to high production costs of playcubebox 2009 and waning interest in 2006.
Main point being, Gamecorp is still $1 billion in the hole.
I guess I'm being naive. But thanks all for the explanation (not being sarcastic)
String together a few profitable quarters and your division becomes self sustaining, at which points profits offset previous losses and eventually becomes a pure profit endeavor.
Which is so much of a skeleton outline it's stupid, but you get the idea.
This is why I don't see MS pulling out just when they could start recouping some losses.

The most successful consoles have taken losses in the beginning to increase their installed base, eventually becoming somewhat of a snowball (ala the PS2). As your installed base gets larger, more publishers want to put games on your console, which makes consumers want the console even more, and so on and so forth. While this is going on, you streamline the manufacturing process to decrease per-unit cost of the system, leading to basically printing money like Nintendo.
Early losses are pretty much standard in the industry, unless you're Nintendo.

Understood. I guess the weird thing about all of this is Nintendo. If they followed the same pattern of early losses, we could all just say it's an industry thing. But one company shows that it doesn't have to be that way, either by a different business model, or whatever, I'm not sure.
I do agree, it's not like the XBOX franchise is going to go away. If 360 didn't have the userbase it has now, then maybe, but the market is there for a new XBOX. It's all in the execution I suppose, in order to eventually turn the corner and make a profit.
I'll shutup now Thanks all.

It still blows my mind that people can seriously think that MS MUST be going under or about to pull out of consoles or whatever else.
What do you people think when you read Sony related news items? Or were you told by your doctors not to because of what it was doing to your blood pressure?
Seriously, it's hardly a big deal in terms of fate of the company type stuff. It's a disappointment for fans, I'm sure, but it's not like there's any shortage of events you'll be able to go to where MS is bound to show up with new shit for you to try out.

Companies have pulled out of the console race before, some with more experience then Microsoft. To think that the Xbox is invincible because Microsoft backs it is the most childish thing I have ever heard. Keep in mind I am not saying anything to bring hate to Microsoft, I want a 360 and I hope they don't fall. I was there with a Dreamcast in hand reading Peter Moore's 'Don't worry guys, we are doing better then Sony' goodbye interview in one of the final issues of DCM.
Anyone who disagrees with Vicious but is unable to express their feeling politely, coherently, and with some decorum could please shut the fuck up about it. Thank you.

if the ultimate goal of microsoft was simply to have a successful game console, then your insane predictions might be worth a grain of salt.

How many had as much cash as Microsoft? The only company that came as close was Warner, and that was over 20 years ago. If Microsoft thinks the 360 will start making money, they will support it. Microsoft happens to think the 360 will start making money in Q1 2008.

So Sony discontinuing the whatever gig PS3 is not a sign that they are going to scrap their game division but Microsoft not wanting to do a conference this year is a sign that they are?
I'm so lost...
Call me crazy but I'm thinking they don't want to announce at a big show because they don't really have anything worth announcing. With Halo 3 coming out why would they want to talk about anything else?
Can I just point out - I can see where he's coming from with this. I disagree with him, but I can see why he's reached his conclusion. It does look rather bad when you take all of the little things and put them together. A bit like The Long Game, really.
This is all just my personal view and insight into the matter so I could be very wrong.
Time will tell.

Sorry let me clarify that. I heard talk that the 360 division will take a dive in sales next year because of the competition with the other two consoles. The ease they have had being the only next gen console on the market is now not on there side. What I said after was my own personal view on why I think they might do even worse then that. Sorry if I was not clear when I wrote that.

See vicious, this is how to argue a crazy doom theory.
Someone step up.
I will eat my own cock if Microsoft doesn't make a console after the 360.
Someone sig it and we're good to go.
did you actually read the articles you linked or did you just look for numbers to post?
2008 is a clean slate or did you not get the memo?
?????
Do you have a link to someplace reputable?

Frankly, if they're going to embrace that show, I think having an X07 after E3, TGS, and E4 would probably be a huge dose of tradeshow overload.
