macbook dmg problem

My macbook won't let me install/open any dmg files. I keep getting a "broken pipe" error no matter what. All my other programs that are already installed work fine. This is obviously a big problem in the future, and my google-fu has produced results that aren't relevant (update OSX- I have the latest update). I'm a Mac newbie, but not a computer newbie, so any technical suggestions are great as long as they're explained somewhat in-depth. Can anyone help? Thanks.

When you say any, what happens if you go to http://www.adiumx.com and download Adium right now? Does it mount?

If not, call Apple. In five years of Mac usage, I've never heard of that problem.

Rather than waste a lot of time going to the Genius Bar, you ought to try re-installing the OS. It's not scary at all, and you won't lose anything, not your installed programs, or even your application preferences.

Pop the OS disc in and reboot while holding 'c' for CD at startup. It will take 30 minutes to an hour, maybe.

I second the reinstallation, just make sure you back up.

I'll try that and let you know. Thanks.

What, if anything, could I lose? In Windows you lose all the My Documents upon a reinstall, I think. Same thing here?

It won't touch your home folder. It might break some programs that install into weird areas, like Photoshop.

All right, fixed the problem. I just used the advice here.

The solution is to more or less reinstall the latest OSX update. That worked. So I guess this thread is done. Thanks for the help, guys. I was really in a panic for a while.
