Okay guys take this with a grain of salt but Play magazine has apparently given Lair an excellent review. Unfortunately I had to get the link from digg.com due to work blocking every website under the sun but here ya go: http://digg.com/playstation_3/Play_Magazine_Gives_Lair_9_0_10_0_AAAE

also in reference to the Lair demo comment, I apologize - for some reason I had in my head that I read somewhere they promised the Lair demo in July. Thanks for crushing my hopes ;)

oh and PS firmware 1.90 - how about it

WHile the screen shots in the OP do indeed look amazing the gameplay seemed hackneyed. Like photo realistic paper cut outs fighting on a photorealistic cardboard world.

I love PLAY magazine for their layout and their love of platformers. Not for their ability to judge gameplay. They are basically Graphic Whores Quarterly.

    Their review read as:

"Tricky controls, unclear goals, BUT ITS PURDY. 9.0"

I'm not sure I believe ANY of it (though it is pretty). Just wait for my typical Gamespot/IGN/1up/Whoever Else review glut and actually read them.

like I said, take it with a grain of salt, it's play after all. Honestly to answer the what have ps3 players been doing, well not much really - Super Stardust HD, Resistance (online anyway), and Ninja Gaiden Sigma. I admit my 360 has gotten more playtime lately hence why I'm really hoping Lair is good.

Resistance, Motorstorm, Virtua Fighter 5, Super Stardust HD, Calling All Cars and Ninja Gaiden Sigma (plus all the multiplatform stuff like Oblivion and Rainbow Six Vegas). Seems like a pretty normal first year really (a hell of a lot better than the PS2's one anyway).

MGS4 looks like it slid to early 2008 (which I really hope didn't suprise anybody.) and it looks like Killzone 2 won't be arriving until around the same time frame. Have no idea what they plan to do as far as compete with Halo 3, perhaps your right, they will simply choose not to...it wouldn't be first time in history that a major title has released without competition.

It's not a bad idea. Halo 3 is THE major title right now, at least in the Western world and the UK.

Maybe M$ has realized that they can't combat MGS4 unless they have some giant gun, and they are hoping that KZ2 will be as good as KZ1, therefore crap, therefore not a threat beyond anyone who will buy KZ2 no matter what.

Based on MGS3's sales I don't think MS is particularly worried. Gears sold more than MGS3, which is doubly impressive considering the 360 vs PS2 install base. Hell, Gears sold more than FFXII.
Killzone 2 could shape up to be a big old hit but the reputation from the original is probably going to taint the early sales, unlike Gears which was just pure hype. Stupid amounts of hype.

The Metal Gear games, while fantastic, are not blockbusters.

People seem to forget that they don't sell like "god damn".

Lair comes out in like 2 weeks, not in early 08. Plus it's not exactly a system seller on the level of Halo or MGS

    Useless console-war talk
Maybe if they ad like Too Human, a new Splinter Cell, Alan Wake.

Along with downloadable Halo 3 content, superior servers for the GTA IV and Katamari Damacy online gameplay.

On top of that announcing a bunch of really exciting a relevant games to be coming out by Christmas of 08 THEN maybe it would be able to slow the MGS4/Killzone 2/PS3 multi purchases.

If MS does all of the above AND they show a cool rebuild for the 360 hardware that is smaller and cheaper then they will secure second place for the rest of the generation.

KillZone: Liberation was an excellent game so I do have a little faith in KillZone 2 not being a complete flop. MGS4 will probably do fairly well but I don't think it's going to be the huge seller people are expecting it to be.

I didn't play Killzone, I kind of wanted to but it got paned pretty hard for having terrible AI so I just never picked it up. I like the premise, and the enemies are freakishly evil looking. It is certainly on my radar, same as Lair. I've heard bad things for the Japanese build of Lair but I hold out hope for it being good because I know, eventually, I'll own a PS3 and will want to do some chomp, chomping with a giant dragon.

MGS4 won't sell a great deal of copies, mainly because of the PS3's small user base.

I hope the reason 2008 for the 360 looks so barren is just a lack of announcements, and not actual dearth of games. For only about a year away from the middle of 2008, you'd think we'd have heard about some more stuff by now though.

Mind letting me borrow that time machine? I'd like to go one week into the future and get the lotto numbers.

Seriously though, MGS4 will do perfectly fine. I expect it to easily eclipse MGS3's worldwide sales, simply because it may very well end up being the PS3's "zomg system seller" (I think Warhawk, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword and R&C look wonderful but at this time I don't think they're at that notch). I guess some of it just depends on how much advertising Konami does for it... Which probably won't be much... Man, I really hope Sony picks up the slack.

Stolen from GAF. This is EGM
    lair: 6.0, 5.5, 5.0
crispin says the combat system is confusing, and the sixaxis controls don't always work the way they should. lock-on system is also jacked.
greg ford says the camera is frustrating in ground combat. the wide open levels hold a lot of potential but ultimately don't deliver
garnett says it's a "frustrating disappointment" with a few bright spots

I wonder if the rest of reviews will follow. Even for EGM, those are some pretty low scores.

For comparison, Mario Strikers got all 7.5s

    persona 3: 8.5, 9.5, 9.5 game of the month
    jeanne d'arc: 8.0, 7.0, 8.0

It wouldn't be the first time EGM has given some stupid scores, but the comments don't say anything that seem like BS.

Yeah, I don't put much thought into EGM scores usually, but a 5 for the lowest score and a 6 for the highest, lower than Mario Strikers, and Garnett calling it a frustrating disappointment don't bode well for the game. I mean, I've never been to hyped up on it, but I never expected it to get bad reviews.

    Also stolen from GAF
    GAMEPRO - 3.75/5 (A)

Pros: Gorgeous graphics, amazing orchestral soundtrack, dragon based action is fun.

Cons: The decision to use a SixAxis only control scheme hurts more than it helps.

Some random quotes from the review...

    ON THE CONTROL SCHEME ISSUES:

"To be fair, the motion sensing is pretty accurate but requiring you to constantly move your hands around while fiddling with buttons over the course of a fairly long game is asking too much. It's unfortunate that the game relies so heavily on a gimmicky feature that no one has been able to get a true grasp of (pun intended)."

    ON THE GOOD QUALITIES:

"At it's best, the dragon-based combat of Lair is pretty damn awesome. Soaring around majestically in the sky; raining hot fiery dragon-breath death upon your foes' heads; grappling with other dragons and clawing their eyes out; leaping onto an enemy dragon-rider's back and hacking at him with your weapon; swooping down onto the ground and rampaging around like Godzilla--there's no shortage of thrills to be had."

    SOME ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:

"I should point out that we were playing an early review build and Factor 5 will probably make tweaks up to the moment the gold master goes off to the mastering lab, but the core gameply mechanics are already in place and there's no denying that it's flawed. I expect many fans will be disappointed thanks to all of the hype that's built up around the game, but the inevitable complaints about the control scheme will no doubt be warrented. Despite all this, Lair still manages to be a decent title that all PS3 owners should look into but you may want to reserve your true excitement for the day when the other hotly anticipated PS3 titles like Heavenly Sword arrive."

    ON THE GROUND CONTROLS:

"The Sixaxis-only control scheme that plagues the game is noticably absent when you land your dragon on the ground as the analog sticks take over, making it easier to wreak havoc."

Hmm, seems like that sixaxis is polarizing. I'm still gonna buy it, make my own decision, yadda yadda, but still.
