LAIR: Dragons kick ass (NSF56k)
Posts
What surprises me most is that I find that if a game has some good qualities there's usually one "dissenting" reviewer that gives it 2 or 3 points higher than the other two - the fact that they all hit with such similar scores is pretty telling.
And this is why you should never go to a console-specific forum. I swear they're all competing for the title of "greatest [insert platform here] fanboy."
It hurts IT HURTS US. gsoisdgksdgszdfz
Hey guys, I heard people played the Halo 3 beta and are trading in their PS3s to get 360s to play it! One guy even traded in three!
Hot Fresh oily LOLBURGERS!
I just had to return my rented PS3, so I won't get to see what it's like. Damnit.
Resistance was'nt that bad though, not over the top awesome, but nothing mindblowing.

god it's JUST A GAME. and ONE game at that.
sweet fucking jesus.
I feel like killing myself after reading all that. My mind it hurts...it hurts.
Lots of EGM hate in there lol.
With lines like "I hope the demo comes out soon so I can see what this guys are talking about."
Do you hate us? Is that why you linked that... Me think brain am melty!
Man, I came in here looking to see if I could find out what this whole EGM hubbub was ...
Now I'm just extremely appreciative that this form has limits on signature sizes and the amount of crap in the avatar column.
Sadly, games are no longer games. To die-hard fanboys they're little more than ammunition to be thrown into the cannons for the System Warzz.
The sad part is that Lair was raised up on a pedestal as a System Seller long before real details surfaced on it, so a vocal minority of the Internet instantly decided that it was either A Golden Savior Developed By Jesus Himself (PS3 fanboys) or complete shit (anti-PS3 fanboys). The game didn't stand a chance at being considered average or even moderately good; it's either 10/10 or completely worthless in the public eye.
The same thing will happen to Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Metroid Prime 3, Brawl or any of the other dozens of system exclusives. It's sad, really.
EDIT: Also, FWIW, I've noticed that reviews for Wii games in general are completely across the board in terms of "These motion controls are awesome!" or "These motion controls suck!" SSX Blur is one of my favorite games and it got almost universally panned by critics. As such, YMMV when it comes to games' motion controls, and Lair will be no exception, I'm sure.
But Metroid Prime 3, Brawl, and Mass Effect are all going to be incredible, so they don't have to worry.
No longer games? You've been living under a rock or something? Watch this.
Sonic 3, with or without the Knuckles add on, is complete trash. Not fit to carry SMB 3's luggage. I give it a 4 out of 10.
I agree with your point to a certain extent. I bet Halo 3 and Brawl will not only be critic proof but I fully expect most major reviewers to give them 90% or higher. You'd have to be super duper nuts not to accept a majority of scores going in that direction as being acceptable.
I am pretty confident Halo 3 and R&C are going to be too. I dont know anything about Uncharted though.
I'm still undecided on what to think about Halo 3. I'm sure it'll be great as a Halo game, and it'll be the standard, and thus will be artificially inflated due to increased quality of Online play, but I haven't seen any trailers that make me feel the same way about it as I do about Assassins Creed or Bioshock or Prime 3, or Brawl. I was never into the R&C thing, so I can't really decide yet about them.
Well, true, this shit's been going on since before the creation of the Internets. But the visceral nature of the System Warzz is always worst in the early stages of the gen, and IMO I find it a lot worse than in previous generations (although I'm sure that's because before I was typically a one-console dude and now I own pretty much every modern platform except for the PS3).
Frankly, I can't wait until the "winner" and "loser" of the gen is roughly settled so that people can strongarm a bit more attention back to just honest-to-goodness game discussion. Brawl really was a poor example on my part, though; I think it'll be universally loved. Walo 3 will get very good marks but it'll still be disparaged as badly as Walo and Walo 2 were by message-board elitists.
Oh absolutely. The only fight that really kept getting stronger as it went along was the Genesis vs SNES wars from my youth. Every console since then has mainly settled by the time the good games came out. This gen is going to be tough. Let's say the Wii continues on its pace and outstrips the rest. That still leaves a huge opening to fanboy ranting, as they can just throw off the Wii as not being in the same market.
Halo 3 has two or three major things that will always make it vulnerable to attacks by fanboys of all types.
1. Halo:CE's shitty and repetitive level design.
2. Halo 2's abrupt ending and overall lazy storytelling.
3. The fact that it is a console FPS and they'll get dissed no matter what.
The first two are opinions held by a lot of people and may or may not be an issue. The 3rd one will always come up no matter how great your game is as long as it is a console FPS.
Back to Lair for a bit and maybe a bit more on reviews. I've heard tell that it also got a 3.75 from Gamepro, a magazine that has been mocked since the beginning of time for having lousy reviews and almost never using their full scale. If we double the score to put it on the same scale and then deduct one point for overrating you'd be at 6.5, a fair deviation from the EGM crowd.
I've been looking everywhere on this game and so far this is what I've come to understand about the game.
It looks really good, which is a plus.
It is a reskinned Rogue Leader game, which is a minus. The floaty arcadey controls work pretty nicely when attached to the SW universe, but somehow it doesn't feel right for dragons.
The controls suck. Plain and simple. This is a huge minus.
Surprisingly, that's all any of the easily obtainable reviews have said on the matter.
Yeah, you'd think people would take the hint from a system that brings almost nothing to the market other than an interesting and fun control scheme being on their way to blowing everyone else out of the water, and realize that maybe control is important to games.
Uh, I'm pretty sure there aren't any Japanese reviews. Especially considering they probably won't get it until October at the earliest... And besides, I may not like EGM's reviews but Famitsu's reviews are probably the worst you'll find on the planet. They gave DOAX2 a 38/40.
If the change in release dates is real I wonder why they pushed the game back? Didn't it go gold awhile ago?
Here be the official explanation for the delay, something to do with implementing the leaderboard support.
While this is sad, it will give me more time for Two Worlds and Bioshock, so that's alright I guess. I for one am still looking forward to Lair.

Oh, I'll pick it up. In fact, the delay makes it a bit easier to consider. Too much to buy in August anyway...
It has a bit of a more open feel, a la the Rogue Squadron games. Which is not too surprising considering it comes from the same developer. I'm pretty sure the levels are all variations on battlefields with invisible barriers surrounding them, with some minor on rails segments.
It also has both air and ground combat.

Or perhaps a far less likely "What the hell, let's delay Lair a little bit more and give it optional stick controls."
Heh, or they're expecting it to fail and trying to cover their asses by blaming it on Heavenly Sword.
Hrm... you'd expect an overall average of around 3. That kind of brings this score much closer to the EGM one then. It really seems that this game is one of those "rent to see for yourself" games.
They can't add in stick controls though, the game has already gone gold.
edit: Although I suppose stick controls could potentially be added in via a game patch.
Most "out of five" scores make about as much sense as the normal ten point scale.
From what I have seen of Gamepro, it is a pretty shitty magazine.
Right, but if they felt the product would benefit enough, they could call the team back from break and eat the cost of the discs produced to date.
But yeah, extremely unlikely.
Good idea.
Took you long enough. The point still stands, there have been people complaining about review scores since the beginning of the gaming magazine industry. I know for a fact I've seen bad reviews for great games like Sonic 3 or Super Metroid.
Also, Sonic 3, while great, isn't good enough to hold SMB 3's luggage.
