LAIR: Dragons kick ass (NSF56k)
Posts
Boy, you are wrong.
Oh, and Super Mario Brothers 3 isn't better in every way? Yeah, that's what I thought.
Anyways. Lair has been delayed, supposedly for leaderboard improvements. Also coming out the same day as Heavenly Sword. I really doubt both will come out the same day.
I by far prefer Sonic over SMB. But that's just me.
As for Lair being delayed. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony released Lair in September in the US and then in October for Europe, while Heavenly Sword's released in September in Europe and then in October for the US. In fact, I'd prefer it...
Oh shit, we agree on something.
SMB3 is good, but it isnt Sonic 3 good.
You are right. It is better than Sonic 3 good.
We have a winnar.
Seriously, that's really subjective, they're both awesome games, that's what matters.

But the game is terrible. You'd be better saving your money for something else, like Uncharted or R&C.
"Lair has come together beautifully... With its stunning visuals and incredible soundtrack, Lair may well be the single most powerful experience that a man can share with his $5,000 home theatre system. 90%"
and also -
"Strip away the graphics and novelty controls and Lair is exposed for what it is: an average shooter the likes of which we've all played before on two earlier PlayStation iterations. 50%" (although I am not sure which ealier iterations they are talking about, isn't Lair a new IP?)
Anyway, when more reviews come out, it may all become clearer, but that is a damn good price on a brand new PS3 game.
have you played it
Have you?
They're talking about Drakengard.
I actually didn't hate Drakengard.
This is an example of a defense that ISN'T good
I just hated the depressing endings as reward for your hours of work.
You just hate me because of the color of my skin.
I hate everyone equally
no
and i'm also not saying it's a terrible game when i haven't played it
Why do you care what I think about a game? I'm just some random joe on the internet. I'm just going by reviews and one particulary funny PA comic from awhile back.
iuno?
reviews aren't the best thing to base if a game is "terrible"
ie Famitsu rated Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire 32/40
IGN rated god hand like a 3/10
Even worse than that, how do I know the reviews aren't just lying to me? What if the reviewers all had an agenda? What if they were all bought off by some shadowy conspiracy group? Lair could be the best game ever.
Or it could be Rebel Strike with dino-dna. Which all signs point to. Who the fuck knows, who the fuck cares.
Only problem is no analog controls, which would make it basically Rogue Leader, which I enjoyed immensely.
Im not sure what was going on behind the scenes. Im not going to suggest there was some Sony conspiracy to make a game justify the sixaxis controls, because if Lair didnt force you to use them would anyone use them? Most reviews correctly complain about the controls as the main issue.
Still, Julian isnt exactly endearing himself to the press lately, going around calling us out on shit like downplaying the Wii or misunderstanding Lair. Nothing more annoying than someone trying to play the 'artiste' card when something is reviewed badly.
Get Warhawk. It is excellent. Lair is a rental.
I never understood the hype that elevated it to such a position in the first place. To me Lair was never in the same league as say Warhawk or Heavenly Sword or Ratchet.
Yeah, after all the trouble it went through I'm glad Warhawk at least came out to be very decent. The only real problem I've heard was that the downloadable version is tied to the account that bought it and not also to the system, so you have to sign on under your name if you want to play. This sucks for people with little brothers who suck at the game, bringing down your average.
Oh, and do you like HS? I have played the demo of that, found it really shitty.
The gameplay isnt exactly spectacular, but the cutscenes, setting and graphics are so polished it kind of elevates it up for me. Like Gears of War. I dont play that game any more cause the shooting is kinda samey every time but the environments and setting are so fuckin cool.
HS is very very short though. Like, Half Life Episode 1 short.
That's damn short.
It is. And just unlike Warhawks pricing it is a completely legitimate complaint about the game. 6 hours first run through, with cutscenes. You can halve that apparently if you play it a fair amount.
3 hours, no matter how polished, is not worth $60.
HS and Lair are almost the perfect rental games. I think this upsets a lot of Playstation 3 owners because unlike the Wii and the 360 the PS3 has all of its big hitters in 2008 and they are a little starved for games in this fall. Which means they will elevate somewhat nothing mediocre games to megaton AAA status out of attrition rather than quality.
Killzone: Liberation had a similar problem, in that the main campaign was only about 5 hours long. Then again, it had a ton of unlockables and then a patch later on which added another 30 or so minutes to the campaign and online play.
Similarly, Motorstorm started off ridiculously limited and now has a lot more content they added via patches. Hopefully HS is patched similarly.
As for Lair, I'm hoping they release a patch which lets you play with analog controls. If they did that, I'd probably pick it up.
Yeah, I can respect them for staying true to their vision but it's really not smart to ignore the biggest criticism the game is getting. Hopefully Sony will force them to fix it, because I don't think they'll be too happy with the scores it's getting.
I might do a huge writeup on how the scores are actually pretty good.
The industry is slowly starting to properly adopt a 1-10 scoring rather than 7-9 and this is shown most evidently in people complaining 1ups 8.5 for warhawk was a bad score.
Its a really interesting discussion, i might make a thread.
if HS ends up with mid 8s in reviews, people will complain, when they shouldnt. so too with lair. lair is looking like a solid 7 game. thats fucking good guys. its not the best but i think the community is behind on catching up with the indsutry changing to 1-10 and still use a 7-9 retardo scoring system.
I'm suddenly pumped! Going to get it now, will post impressions later today!

God damn you, I hope you die [and in your will give me the copy of LAIR]! But before you do, do post some impressions.
I wish my Gamestop got it in early and sent me a call.
EDIT: Holy crap, my Gamestop got it in early. I checked the website and it showed it as now shipping. Apparently, the game shipped out early and the stores are allowed to sell it. I'm going to go pick up my pre-order!
Congrats!
Now we can both post impressions.
I just got back home with mine, about to pop it in. Have to work in about 30 minutes, but I work from home so...shouldn't be a problem.

This is very much a Factor 5 game.
Graphics? AWESOME.
Sound and Music? AWESOME.
Gameplay? Pretty much just Rogue Squadron with motion controls.
That said, the presentation is really winning me over. It starts with the little THX guy and the moo can trailer. Then it goes right into the menu. The whole game is seamless. There are some fades to black, but never does the word "Loading" come up on screen. It's all quite smooth. I've noticed a couple of tiny framerate hitches so far, but I'm running at 1080p and it's pretty amazing.
The controls feel fine to me, I haven't had any trouble with my dragon yet. The only thing that is kind of crazy is that so much chaos is happening that sometimes I don't know who I'm supposed to shoot. Fortunately, you can press a button that highlights your targets. Problem: Solved.
In short, so far it seems like a really fantastic showpiece for all that power the PS3 is supposed to have, and it's fun. It's definitely a popcorn game though. But I'm loving it. I've played the first level and the basic tutorial so far. Like Rogue Squadron, they throw you right in and there's a more advanced selection of tutorials should you want it.
Also like Rogue Squadron, there are medals you can get. Oh boy! Ahem. I probably won't get all of them.
Ample extras are available in the menu, including a grayed out commentary option. I can't wait to unlock that as I love game commentary.
