The one thing visually that gets me in this game is during the non-interactive scenes, it places a ark haze at the top and bottom of the screen, making me feel like I'm looking at the game through cataracts or while suffering through tunnel vision.

Gamerankings said PSM Magazine gave it a 5 out of 10 and EGM gave it a 5.5 out of 10, so it's not just IGN. The combined ranking is currently 64%, but IGN's review isn't in it yet.

I dunno I'm enjoying it quite a bit. the most important thing to me is that it's alot of fun (which, it is for me). The framerate is jumpy, the visuals sometimes are too busy so that you're confused often, there's a ton going on at all times, it's chaotic and there's a ton of brown. Those are my complaints, but after any negative I ask myself if I'm having fun. If I am then it's worth it. The controls really aren't that terrible. they sure as hell aren't the picture perfect idea of motion control, but they could have done far far worse.

I'm glad you guys are enjoying it, too. It's funny that everyone in here who has it has no problems with the controls, yet the reviews all bash the game for them. Hell, I actually kind of like the controls. As I said before, it somehow adds to the game for me.

I won't sit here and say that forcing people into sixaxis control was a good idea, I think it was would have been perfectly reasonable to expect an option for analog movement. I like the controls, I can use them just fine but there are levels where I would have preferred some analog switchover - there are things you simply cannot achieve with the way sixaxis is designed.

At the end of the day it really doesn't matter, the game is fun - i'm enjoying it.

Has it been posted here yet that you can apparently plug in any generic USB pad into the PS3 and control it sans motion control? Kohler mentioned it on Wired but I'm gonna have to try it out this weekend. Cwazy.

But how would you pull off some of the moves? Wouldn't you be unable to do take-downs and certain maneuvers? To take down war beasts you need to do the dash move.

Also, I'm still in awe at the graphics in this game. Friggin' gorgeous.

I just beat it. It wasn't the longest game out there, obviously, but it was one helluva' ride. The last two missions were pretty great, although all of them were a lot of fun. I can see myself replaying this quite a bit. And as far as the controls go, once again, by the end of it I was realizing how easy I had grasped it. I wasn't even thinking about the motion controls as I played, I just simply played. The game does not deserve the flak it's been getting. It's a hugely cinematic, gorgeous, and I think fun game.

Shame on you, etoychest, for not liking it. :)

I just rented it and am convinced that anyone who has trouble with the controls is just incompetant. Seriously, I suck at games and I picked this thing up right away. I have had no troubles at all. It took me one or two tries to get the 180 down pat, but now I can execute it every time I try. Also, this game is gorgeous. I'm not far in yet, I'll have more time to sit down with it tomorrow, but IGN can go fuck themselves. 4.9? What the fuck? What game were they playing?

I know! Every review is complaining about the controls, yet every person in this thread has had no problems at all with them. I find that humorous. Although, etoychest said Sony won't like his review, so maybe he doesn't like the controls. D: Maybe it's a critic thing? I wonder if I started writing for a game website again if I would magically become entirely incompetent with LAIR's controls. :P

They must be inept. That or they didn't play more than the first mission. A lot of review sites have been known to have played little more than the first level or hour of the game they're reviewing. Gamespot has been caught several times where they reviewed a full game based off a demo or an old build. Maybe it's a combination, but it still baffles me. I was actually enjoying the motion controls throughout the game.

I got Lair today. I had forgotten that I preordered it months ago before the poor reviews/previews started rolling in.

Its not nearly as terrible as the reviews seem to make it out to be. The controls are workable. I have trouble doing the 180 move though. Graphics are great unless you're moving the view around a lot because then it just turns into a blurry mess. Way too much motion blur IMO.

I had trouble with the 180 move at first, but you know what's a great way to practice it? Pretend you're playing the Folklore demo. It's exactly like id-ripping in the demo, which might be why I find it so easy.

I too am still loving the controls. They work completely fine, and I get really into it with some of the gestures and it has a visceral feeling. It's quite fun! I don't know how many more levels I have left, but I'm well into the game now. I'll probably beat it this weekend. Then I have to decide if I want to try for all the gold medals. Did you unlock the commentary by finishing it?

Also, I'm genuinely curious as I'd never heard it before, on what games has Gamespot been caught reviewing old builds or demos?

This is sounding like a total love-it-or-hate-it sort of game. I wonder how well it'll do at retail amidst the negative reviews, especially how it's usually touted as one of the PS3's big make-or-break games.

Lair was the only game (so far) that was making me wish I were willing to buy a PS3. I haven't read any reviews yet though, and if I had a PS3 nothing could stop me from at least renting it. I'd like a good dragon riding game...

I don't have anything against the PS3, It just doesn't interest me as much as my 360, Wii, and PC. And that Wii had been disappointing so far, until I got it connected and downloaded Starfox 64.

Advent Rising had mediocre to poor reviews. I chose the last option and did not regret it.

Unfortunately, I also did the same thing and rented Two Worlds. Did not work out so well that time.

This was my impression of it. Granted, people here seem to really like the game, so more power to you. Reviews are just one person's narrow perspective at a product, so you take what you want from them and throw away the rest. I'm hoping next week on Gamasutra we run a piece on the game looking at the various reviews floating about. As I said earlier int his thread, I hope the game succeeds despite it not being well received by the media. The PS3 needs a hit in the march up to the holiday rush.

I can confirm that it works. I'm using a PS2 > USB adapter. I haven't figured out a way to do a 180 or a dash, but that may be because of the lack of motion controls. Also the button mappings are off so it took me a minute to figure out how to get around the menus and do anything in the game.

I dunno, I love it and all, but perhaps we as a collective consumer are overlooking the flaws because we *want* to like it and are able to have fun regardless of the flaws it has. Kinda like putting up with bullshit in order to get to the awesome stuff. Where, the awesome stuff and the bullshit are mixed together in every single level so therein lies the problem. Perhaps being unable to discern the bullshit due to there being "awesome" 5 seconds later and not caring about said bullshit anymore, because of the awesome.

I haven't even really found anything that would fall into the 'bullshit' category, though. I mean, the explosions are kind of lame looking up close but any other problems are really relatively mild. It's not like there's anything that's so utterly buggy/poorly designed/poorly implemented that it's ruining the game experience or anything.

oh, not at all. ok, I feel it boils down to this for all the reviewers:

-they are on a time table to get it completed or near completed then reviewed.
-taking to all the new controls might have been more stressful to some (most) of them, so as to lower their chances of enjoying it. They probably *did* have to fight with the controls to get the dragon to do what they actually wanted it to. It's quite beneficial that I have never had any motion control problems with it yet.
-They might have just hyped themselves up way to much.

and, the only bullshit I see is that sometimes it's very disorienting to go from 1 task to another so rapidly fast and be required to be very quick at completing it. The thing though is that I'm having alot of fun *doing* these tasks so it's never an "UGH" moment to where I need to do them.

It's quite possible that in the backs of peoples minds they just never wanted to be forced into a control method. it's like being forced into 1 option in Halo2 or something. Like, the weird control option that has primary fire on X instead of right trigger.

what really boggles me is that I've seen games with bugs all over them and shoddy controls themselves be received better than Lair. 4.9 from IGN? jesus, I'm willing to bet there's a far worse game that was received better than this. I do hope it sells well honestly. I'd like to see a Lair 2 or something.

when I saw 4.9 and 5.5 and all that, I was seriously expecting some aweful attrocious game that would kick me in the face for even looking at it. I was expecting Steel Harbinger. If you don't know that game find the reviews for it....oh man what an aweful game.

It does nothing new that Factor 5's other titles haven't done, it just ratchets up the insanity.

DarkSymphony, I too thought I might be overlooking the crap due to the awesomeness on display, but mark me as another person who can't find anything in this game he'd call "Crap." Is it the best thing ever? No. Is it a fun, loud, epic dragon game? Yeah.

yeah I agree it's awesome. I'd say it's an 8/10 if I were to personally rate it. However, that wouldn't mean anything to anyone except for me. so yay pointless. anyways if anyone has concerns over it just know the reviews are far far far to low. Yeah I agree it might not be everyones cup of tea but to flat out say it's an aweful game is going a tad far just because they couldn't get used to motion controls.
