With so many nerds on this forum it's a safe bet that most of you have seen Blade Runner and love this classic by Ridley Scott with all your hearts, as do I.

So recently I was pondering the fact that I don't actually own it on dvd and what a tragedy that is, so I checked a few sites for copies and at first was somewhat surprised to find that there aren't any new copies available, you can only get it used.

Certainly some of you already know why, but for those of you not in the know the film was released over the years in a few different versions. Primarily the original U.S. release and then later the director's cut. However due to a lapse in the publishing rights for the film, it's been in limbo for over a year with no one producing new copies.

The good news is that this is finally about to change but the details are a bit vague. From what I've been able to find, it sounds like Blade Runner: Final Cut will be released in theaters sometime this fall to be followed by a limited release of a special 5 disk collection that includes all three versions of the film.

On the one hand, I'm jazzed that this masterpiece is finally being re-released on dvd. However a 5 disc collection with all 3 versions also strikes me as overkill and it'll likely cost a significant wad of cash. I've also heard that the Final Cut version not only has added footage, but I've read rumors that the Vangelis score has been replaced with a new score by Clint Mansell. Keep in mind, I read this on youtube for the trailer for Final Cut so take that with a grain of salt unless you hear it from a more reputable source. Personally I think Vangelis' score was fucking brilliant and it would be difficult to top his work in my opinion, but then you also apparently get the two previous versions with the set so I guess you can just watch the one you like most (but I'd really prefer to just buy the one version I like most instead of all 3).

There's apparently going to be a big announcement about Final Cut at ComicCon, I'm dying to know more details about this.

Some more info on the upcoming release:
From May, 06
from June, 07 and mainly about the ComicCon announcement.

I've never seen the movie.

Blade Runner was literally the only movie i've ever fell asleep while watching. I consider myself to be a lover of the arts and literature. If I can stay awake for "Waking Life", why the fuck couldn't I finish Blade Runner? Because there were fifteen minute scenes of a guy pouring a glass of whiskey. It was like I was watching a series of disconnected scenes, each written by a different director who had not discussed anything with the other guys. I don't get the appeal.

Maybe I should try watching Blade Runner again. I didn't like it too much at all the first time I saw it a few years ago.

Watching Rutger Hauer stand in the rain in his undies and scream was just kind of weird.

Yeah, but I have this special place in my heart for Film Noir, and it kind of gave it that sort of feeling. Like Film Noir in the future.

Man this is bizarre, because I remember seeing this in the theater when it was first released. I was 16 and my best friend Mike and I loved this film. All of my friends enjoyed it and we must have watched it a couple of dozen times at least over the next decade. Interesting how the current generation just doesn't get the film.

There's a lot this new generation doesn't get, Dru.

    Blade Runner
    Charles In Charge
