Keep in mind that there aren't any dvd's currently being produced of the movie so part of the issue is that there's a shortage compared to the demand. I'm not so sure I'll like Final Cut and really all I want is the original theatrical release in a quality port to dvd for a reasonable price. However since that's not available I will seriously consider buying Final Cut unless they also release either the theatrical version or the director's cut by themselves, then I'll just buy one of those.
My little brother works in Santa Monica for LOLA studios, which is the sister company to Hydralux (a hollywood special effects studio).
Working on the "Final Cut" digital mastering/editing was the bulk of his life for the past two months.
I wish I had his job, he said its been a very fun project.
I'm hoping Denver will be one of the cities to show this "Final Cut" version on the big screen.
Hm, I thought it was coming out on Blu-ray soon. Maybe that's the announcement.
I have the original DVD (Director's Cut) and the transfer is..... suboptimal.
I have to admit I kind of liked the original version as a kid but MAN the director's cut is So. Much. Better. Especially the ending.
Also on the subject of early 80s Ridley Scott films, if you haven't, check out the director's cut of "Legend". Wow it's like a totally different film. Especially if you watch the making-of director's cut where they show a scene from the original cut and then the director's cut... you can see how they hacked it to pieces .. and added that horrible cheesy 80s synthesizer soundtrack (the Director's cut has a great score by Jerry Goldsmith).

i like everything about the director's cut except the unicorn dream
i love blade runner, its actually my favorite film ever. its just amazing, amazing score, amazing visuals, great story and acting. i cant wait for the new version, hopefully it will get a small cinema release or at least the arthouse cinema here shows it
I... how many people on the internet have seriously not seen Blade Runner or worse still, seen it and not liked it?
I really really find this shocking. Are you all too young to have seen it or something?
Am I too old for the internet??
In other news: Theatrical Cut oh jesus I have a tape of that from when it was on late night tv like 20 years ago and god shit fuck damn did I watch that until the tape wore almost right through. I've wanted a dvd of that so bad I almost bought a bootleg off some sketchy site.
I'm 31. I own the DVD.
It's not a bad movie, and I like Harrison Ford. I just don't get the nerd-cult following of it. The movie's kinda, well....boring.
Now keep in mind I've not seen the original cut, which I've heard is much better than the 'director's cut' that I currently own. There may be some key material that I missed the first time through, and I'm always one for giving something a second try....maybe the appeal will reveal itself to me the next time around.
The unicorn dream in the director's cut didn't bother me, but I don't like the ending. I prefer the ambiguity of the original release, Deckard doesn't know if she's got a termination date but he's going to run off with her anyway. Then in the director's cut they wrap it up neatly and you know she doesn't.

I like the film. No, it's not paced very well; at least, not by today's standards. I can see a lot of people not liking it but I think it starts to grow on you over time.
Did I get that backward? I thought at the end of the director's cut Deckard explains in a voice over that Tyrell told him that Rachel was special and didn't have a hard coded "expiration" date when she would die. I'm pretty sure this was not explained in the original release.
edit: ah, thanks ricky-o. then I definitely prefer the director's cut.

dude the directors cut just ends with
"It's too bad she won't live. But then again, who does?"

I think you raise a good point, people seem to have shorter attention spans these days and they tend to want everything they see to have an obvious role in forwarding the plot. I love the pacing in Blade Runner but it's much more subtle. I can see how some would look at the film and say it moves too slow, but with few exceptions, those drawn out scenes not only convey important context but also set a mood.

I don't know that bad editing\pacing in one version of the movie can be called 'subtle', or labeled as slow, necessarily.
I happen to love 'Coffee & Cigarrettes'...and that's a pretty goddamned slow movie by today's standards. The version of Blade Runner that I've seen - it's odd pacing hams up the somewhat-clunky dialogue, and at times, I just got completely disinterested it what was taking place on the screen.
However, I keep hearing that the original had a noir narration that the director's cut does not have - now that I would like to see, as it may totally change the movie for me.
My dad watches awful television nowadays (he will watch the Sci-Fi channel regardless of what trainwreck original movie is on) but I will always respect his tastes in Sci-Fi movies because he gave me Blade Runner and Alien/Aliens.
Is it bad that I like Alien/Aliens slightly better than Blade Runner? I don't care what anyone says, Xenomorphs are ingrained in my brain forever.

wait what
the director's cut doesnt
the theatrical cut is the one with the added-on drive off into stock footage at the end
edit: ah, thanks ricky-o. then I definitely prefer the director's cut.
"It's too bad she won't live. But then again, who does?"
this is the script from the theatrical release
the director's cut had deckard finding gaff's unicorn, nodding, and leaving with rachel
that' sit
Like I said, the ending is much better in the director's cut..
my original opinion was based on the incorrect recollection of how the two versions end
