I had this with HL episode one. I had to redownload it and then it worked.
I also had it with HL episode one again when i tried to play it in offline mode, connecting, running it, then going to offline mode again worked.
contact them though yeah, both the above where what the support guys suggested for that particular game.

Well, it turns out Steam Support doesn't apply directly to third party games, and the general troubleshooting manuals are way too technical for me.
Anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix this? My seven dollars feel...wasted.
usually due to corruption, if its steam downloaded and based, then run the file verifier. If that doesn't work reinstall. Also you might what to test the drive to make sure there are no failures.

I tried verifying the files and defragmenting them - Steam gave me a message saying Gish had been optimized. This was after I installed new drivers and reinstalled the game twice, and I'm still getting the same error message.
Anyone have any other ideas? I really want to play this game.
