New Computer, What Can I Play Now?

So, after having the same crappy Dell for like five years, I finally got a new computer.

Granted, it's a laptop, and not exactly gaming-oriented, but I imagine since I upgraded from what was basically a calculator, I should be able to catch up on some stuff.

Old computer specs:
Intel P4, 2.4 800 MHz FSB
1 Gig some type of old ram
GeForce 5200

Laptop specs:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5470 (1.6GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
2 gigs DDR2 SDRAM @ 667
GeForce 8400M GS

So, are there any games I couldn't play before that I should be able to now? Should I try out Oblivion without the Oldblivion mod?

With the 8400, the oldblivion mod shouldn't be needed.

Any idea what settings I should be able to hit with it?

And how much better is the dual core my laptop has than the P4? I know the dual core is supposed to be better, but the speed thing is considerably lower so I'm not sure exactly how much better it is.

Never used an 8400 and laptop benchmarks are fairly hard to come by, but I can't imagine it being much worse than, say, a 7600GS.

And the Core 2 Duo is unimaginably better than any Pentium 4. Pay no attention to the clock speed (number of GHz), as it's worthless in knowing how well something performs. A 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo handily outperforms the old 3.6GHz Pentium D Extreme Edition.

Using the newest build of Catalyst for a 200M, I can play Oblivion without the Oldblivion mod....

So you really shouldn't have a problem with the 8400.

Granted I do have to play it on the lowest settings when hitting up those large battles like the Kvatch seige or get lagtastic, but overall you should be fine with some of the pretties turned on. The best thing to do though, is let it do the auto-detect thing, and then just fiddle with them 'till you get the correct levels for your taste.

Neat. So what else can I do? Should I try F.E.A.R. on low settings? Medium? Too hopeful?

Side question: Will games generally run better on XP or Vista?

Are you serious?! You have said laptop. You have FEAR and oblivion. Play them yourself and find out.

If playing these games on high quality settings is important to you, you should have kept the old laptop and bought a desktop.

Well, actually, I don't have the laptop yet, it's still shipping, and I don't have FEAR because my desktop couldn't run it.

Also this is my first laptop. I'm just asking what they're likely to run on, I never said playing them on high quality was important. I just want to know what's likely to happen.
