I'm possibly being too paranoid but does anyone else notice a semi-high pitched hum from their PS3 after it's been on for awhile? I've had my PS3 for about a week now but really just noticed the noise today, probably because I left it on to Fold with the TV off. The noise isn't loud enough to be heard over the TV when playing a game or watching a movie but you can hear it when the room is quiet. It's sort of a high-pitched hum...

ya, it's a high tech device that produces a lot of heat, hence, lots of fans to keep it cool. nothing to worry about

Mine makes a slight hum when the fans kick in, if it's been on for a while and is warm in my room. I wouldn't call it "high pitched" though. Just a low hum... that sounds like fans.
My PC is at least three times as loud as my PS3 (which is right near it).
It's normal to hear a little noise as stated, it's just the fans speeding up to compensate for heat. I guess i've never noticed it given I have a jet engine sitting on the opposite side of the tv (my xbox360)

I use the same setup and the 360 is much, much louder. However, the PS3 was almost silent until I heard this.
I wouldn't put too much thought into it unless you start experiencing issues with game / movie playback. The PS3 is actually a pretty reliable piece of hardware despite Sony's history with the PS2.
The PS3 does kick into a higher fan speed mode when you run the folding app, I hear it every hour of most every day. It's absolutely nothing to worry about.

No one knows why it's happening and it doesn't seem to have any negative affect on the system but it's pretty annoying. If mine continues to make the noise I guess I'll call Sony and have it repaired...
