I've not read much about this game, but it's supposed to be like a God of War/Devil May Cry type game? At least that's what I'm gathering from you guys.

That's the vibe I'm getting as well, except apparently you do nothing to block and are incapable of jumping. (At least, jumping freely.)
Neither of those things sounds particularly promising to me. Still, looks like it could be a good one.

I'm not a big fan of that genre, at all. I was hoping it would be something more than that, but I suppose games like that are pretty easy to make.
They say it's really, really, really pretty, moreso than anything else on the PS3, but the combat's repetitive, the puzzles are a bust, the cutscenes are pretty but come far, far too frequently for people wanting extended bursts of action, and the game can be beaten in 6-7 hours.

Eek. IGN is usually fairly generous with their scores, aren't they?
Not exactly looking like the killer app is was made out to be. Didn't the same happen to LAIR and Warhawk?
*nod*
I think people are putting these PS3 games on some sort of godly level... and they can never reach that level, so the disappointment hits harder than it would have if we weren't expecting it.

I think it's more that PS3 owners are looking for an early killer app to brag about, and so games are being hyped which wouldn't have been had they been on say, the 360, or something that already has big releases coming out.
I mean, Lair and Heavely Sword never looked terribly fun. Ever. People just clung to them for some reason.

Heavenly Sword looks freaking beautiful, but not very fun like you said. They just wanted a game to justify their $600 purchase I suppose.
I always felt if they had got rid of the countering system, made a block/jump button it would be gold. The countering system seemed to cause the most problems during combat. I hope that 5-6 hour playtime is actual gameplay and not including the cut scenes, if not...meh.
5 to 6 hours out of a 60 dollar game? And that gets it a 7, man sounds like that reviewer didn't like the game that much, but gave it a decent mark just because.

So what assumed killer apps are left that are coming out reasonably soon?
Eye of Judgement (killer app up for debate) is going to be a good deal, includes the new camera/game for 60 bucks, Tycho and Gabe seem pretty stoked about it.
The things im looking forward to (whether they are 'killer' apps is up to you)
Tekken 5 DR: Online
Haze
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Unreal Tournament III (timed exclusive)
Ratchet and Clank
Warhawk
Lair (IGN's preview seems good, I don't put much faith in Play Magazine's game reviews)

The things im looking forward to (whether they are 'killer' apps is up to you)
Tekken 5 DR: Online (Fighting game)
Haze (Might be good)
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (Only heard a little of the game)
Unreal Tournament III (timed exclusive) (PC)
Ratchet and Clank (Hopefully will be good)
Warhawk (Meh.)
Lair (IGN's preview seems good, I don't put much faith in Play Magazine's game reviews) (No hope)
Folklore (Never heard of it)
Call of Duty 4 (multi platform tho)(PC)
Phew, looks like i can last another 6 months without buying one (at least)

That was a really scathing article for the game to get a 7.
Their ratings are pretty favourable to some of the aspects:
9.0 Presentation
The cutscene work is fantastic, as are the extras (even though you can get most of them freely online).
9.0 Graphics
Beautiful in every respect. Character models are great, and the vistas are a-plenty.
9.0 Sound
Sound effects are fantastic as is the music and voice work.
7.0 Gameplay
The combat system is mostly very good, though the battles get repetitive very quickly and some of the extra stuff (like the button matching mini-games) needed more polish.
5.0 Lasting Appeal
The experience is over fairly quickly. There are a number of really good unlockables to go back and earn, though you can already get them online right now.
7.0
Decent OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)
Anyway, I'm still looking forward to Heavenly Sword but not as much as I was previously. The fact that it's 7 hours long doesn't really affect me THAT much considering that I've got games that I've played a lot less.
Uncharted, R&C and Warhawk are definitely my picks for the PS3's best games this year though.
6-7 hours long? Shit balls. I was really looking forward to this game but hell if I'm paying full price for a game that is all of 6 or 7 hours long. I'll probably pick it up when I can get one used.

Haze (played it at GC in Coop, I thought it felt too much like Timesplitters - good, but not great)
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (played it and to be honest it didn't impress me much)
Unreal Tournament III (timed exclusive) (one of the very best playable games there and it was almost worth the 3 hours of waiting :P)
Ratchet and Clank (never played R&C before, I liked it but it certainly won't be a system seller)
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (played it and to be honest it didn't impress me much)
I surprised and somewhat saddened by this. From what I've seen Uncharted looks awesome. Its the game I'm most looking forward to this fall. (Partially because I think the wife will like it too.)
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
Im a little bummed that this game supposedly isnt that good. This was going to be the first thing I thought I would actually want to play on my roomie's PS3.
I won't let some reviews bug me. I enjoyed the demo so I'll most likely enjoy the game. Plus I don't really care about how long it is. At least I'll know I'll finish it since it doesn't take forever and I'm not going to let length let me miss out on the experience. You can fit a lot of cool shit into 6-7 hours that's like 1 1/2 LOTR movies worth of time to have cool shit.
I imagine we won't see too big of an increase in PS3 sales this year. The start of next year looks very promising with KillZone 2 and MGS4.
Man, LAIR and Heavenly Sword being AAA could have pushed me into a PS3, what with the Sony Style deal.
Things are looking down for the PS3, I thought it would make some real games with those two titles this Christmas. As it is they are going to get hammered in game stores with no one being able to point to any AAA titles this season.
God, things are pretty bad if KillZone 2 and MGS4 are what Sony is going to be stuck promoting as system seller titles. Considering MGS3s sales and the pretty bad press the fist KillZone got I can't see the PS3 install base increasing that much until next Christmas. This hole Sony has been digging is starting to get pretty deep.
To clarify, Eye of Judgement will NOT be $60 with the eye encluded. I asked one of the reps at PAX, and they said that was a typo. They have not set a price in stone yet.
I played HS at pax, and it was fun, but I DO think that it got kind of annoying. "Voulenteers?!" Fight. "Voulenteers?!" Fight.
I'm seriously not counting Lair out - IGN said the controls were good in their preview a while back. Most recently at gamers convention one of the Kotaku editors got hands on with it and said the controls were excellent and he was able to pick up and play in no time, tight turns, diving, the whole nine yards.

Yeah that is pretty bad. Also: Killzone 2 is supposed to be good? Wasn't the first one pretty mediocre?
I'm also not keeping my hopes up on the next MGS. I wasn't a big fan of 2, I couldn't play more than an hour of 3 (eating stuff, and I'm not very good at stealth-type games). I played through the first one about 30 times, however.

Well I canceled my Heavenly Sword pre-order the other day. A five hour game isn't worth 60 dollars, especially with extremely repetitive gameplay. I put that 30 dollars into Call of Duty 4.

So yeah, Gamestop called me yesterday to tell me they'll have this in today. I'm actually really excited.
The short length thing didn't bother me. Stranglehold is kinda short yet so awesome that I'll play it multiple times. I expect the same from this title. Heck, I've played the demo over 20 times.
I'll post some impressions later after I pick it up.
