In the begining when you're floating down to Rapture and Ryan is talking, right before you dock it sounds like Atlas and some woman are talking, Can anyone make out what they are saying?
From what I remember he's actually telling some guy that the bathysphere is returning, and he's sending the guy to come meet whoever's arriving. Presumably the guy he sends it the same fella that
promptly gets disembowelled.
edit: I AM SO SLOW TODAY
That's the impression I got though buddy arrived pretty quick if that's the case.
I'll have to listen to it again when I get home. I could have sworn I heard a woman say something.
The splicers are not working for him? I thought that was fairly obvious since they are allowed to do as they please, they are the dominant 'species' down there (excluding the little sisters and big daddies, I'll pass them off as a rogue group who are just left alone) and I'm guessing that they basically run the place. Ryan has control over most things I'm guessing so the splicers obviously seem to follow his lead as they could most likley rebel or overthrow one guy if they wanted to. I thought it wasn't a coincidence that he locks you in there and splicers appear right away.
Even without direct control if he can manipulate the gates and drones he could corral them to your location. We know they are capable of rational thought so it’s also possible they’re just loyal lackeys.

There were some weird anomalies in the demo that caught my attention.
For example, how did Atlas manage to take control of the security system to drive off the first splicer? Of course, there is always the strong possibility that he hacked it to work for him, like the player can do, but it bothers me for some reason.
Also, Junkie reminded me of something. There does seem to be some interaction and relationship between Ryan and the Splicers since one can infer that he set them on us at the very end.

Sorry, I meant to say that I DO think they are working for him, precisely for the coincidence and reasons you mentioned.
I agree with your idea since it does seem that the Splicers are lone wolves but Ryan can exert his influence on them considerably when he wants to.
Well, the sign says the use of it is off limits but I doubt the people down there are going to follow every sign they see in that situation, I'm guessing the splicers/Ryan are in control of the transit systems.
i figured they'd treat it as more than just a suggestion. Enforce it on pain of death, more like.
edit: and as for cool things that i saw while observing it be played
the woman talking to her baby. Now that just ain't right.
was anyone else dissappointed by the lack of the inventory systeM?
It was a fun part of SS2 because how you leveled your character determined how much stuff you could have...
ninja edit: I'm simply relenting to the fact that they took my RPG shooter and turned it into a Shooter with RPG elements...:-(
anyone got drunk yet? I also liked the blurring depth-of-field when you come round, and the way your eyes get all fuzzy when you walk through water. Some neat little touches there.
Inventory+ Already Complicated FPS = Maybe not such a good idea.
Also, just a guess, but I think you can only hold 9 Medkits/EVE shots at one time.
And seeing as some things in this game hit pretty fucking hard, 9 medkits may not be all that much.
thats true. That sort of managing material was easier (imho) when there was an inventory system. YOu could stack same items, and then use another slot to gather more items of the same type. Minor detail really, i hope the game itself lends itself to different sorts of complexity.

From reading all the various interviews I kinda figured Atlas was Ryan's #2.
Atlas seems to be able to see what you're up to at all times, and provide guidance via radio. This kinda hints to me that he's in some kind of control room, watching the player through cameras and possibly battling with Ryan for control of the security system.

This game comes out in a week? Is that right?
If so, good timing. I get my new computer this weekend (X2 6000, factory overclocked 8800GTS 640MB, etc). I still have not played Half-Life 2. Like ever. And only the demo of FEAR. So many games to play.....mmmmm.....
I like the hacking minigame. I used to play pipe dreams on the NES.
The only thing that bugged me was that they next tell you how to force use an eve hypo (reload while a plasmid is selected). I have to think about it for a bit before I figured it out.
And seeing as some things in this game hit pretty fucking hard, 9 medkits may not be all that much.
Yes. And it's also looking like ammo isn't going to be littered all over the place. Hell, I emptied my revolver trying to take out a single Splicer last night. The enemies freak you out, you panic, and you spray your bullets all over the place.
I'm a little concerned about that--I mean, I'm already shitting a brick thinking about having to take on Mr. Bubbles. How many medkits/bullets will I need for those encounters?
They did an awesome job conveying just how bad ass the Protectors are--just completely ill-tempered, motherfucking walking tanks. I'm actually worried about having to go up against them.
And all of the above just makes me love the game even more.

You know, between stranglehold and bioschock good demos yay ftw
and Beautiful Katamari, Eternal Sonata, and skate about ready to hit (when it's gone through certification again). Yeah, it's quite insane the amount of goodness being bestowed upon us.

You don't have to fight the Big Daddy, though. They'll only attack you if you try to hurt the Little Sisters. After seeing one of them take out a Splicer, however, I don't think I'll ever try to get ADAM from one of those Little Sisters. :P Although, I'm tempted to try just to see what happens.

Levine pretty much said you have to fight the Big Daddy's eventually. What you do with the Little Sister is very important to the story.

Something kinda just dawned on me. I haven't tried it so I don't know exactly how it works, but what exactly is the point to buying out a security system when you are hacking it. I mean I get the idea, spend some cash and bypass the minigame. But how the hell would that work? Are you stuffing dollar bills in the barrel of a gun turret or.. g-string and that magically makes it your friend?

99% sure when you beat the demo in the cutscenes / demo shots they show you actually fighting (and beating the shit out of) those Mr. Bubble things. You get pretty fucking creative with how you kill them, but I'm quite sure you do.

it just means that the puzzle-challenged retards can hack things too, but will need to find more money to do so. By that, i mean i'm sure it's a gameplay decision, rather than one that's been designed to be consistent with the rest of the game-world.
I think the buyout was added to give people who suck at the minigame a way out of some situations. Although it could probably be justified within some Randian explianation of an 'impartial' security coddles the moochers in society, so security is just another buyable commodity for those who have earned it.

And I for one am thankful for it because I couldn't do the hacking minigame at all.... I don't know if there was some button to rotate parts but I just couldn't find one.
I didn't hear the Hail Atlas... shit I have to play this demo again?... Maybe I'll be able to wait for the actual release.
Have you guys noticed we've spent a good 20 pages of this thread talking about a 20 minute long demo? Is that not just fucking crazy? Is there any other game that elicits such discussion?
Also:
- It would be awesome if you waited for 24 hours at the lighthouse, then you get rescued and the voice-over goes "I was special. I survived." and game over?
- The plane ride was a perfect amount of time; why do you need everything spelt out for you? There is no benefit in talking to the passengers or watching the plane go down into the water except for your own idle fascinations. The thing is meant to be shocking, not actually reflect the tedium of being on an aeroplane. The only thing I didn't need on the plane ride was the voice-over... it's not needed. The only thing it does is remove your ability to project yourself onto him. It seems like the rest of the game will be a Freeman-esque silence fest, Atlus talks at you, and you have nothing to say to all the humans that are fucking you up.

I don't think so, I think it's not exactly like Pipe Dream. You have a swap slot, and you just go through uncovering as many squares as you can until you find the piece you want, put it in the swap slot, then put it where you want it. I presume it gets harder... it's just a race to uncover pieces right now, which is a bit tedious.

The guy at EBGames just let me pre-order it, so I'm assuming yes.

I don't know if this has been mentioned in the 80 or so pages, but the art book for Bioshock is available right here: http://www.2kgames.com/cultofrapture/artbook.html
I checked it out, seems to have a lot of the early sketches/design of the game - some of the monsters look really bad-ass!
edit: ok ok, you know
WE KNOW.
Also, incredible amounts of spoilers in that book.
