Ok, this is driving me crazy - what do you call those leather shin guard thingees (that the crude red arrows are pointing toward) in the above picture?

    Spats/gaiters. I think spats are usually pretty short where gaiters go up to your knee.

    Spats. Which allegedly are back in, for some godforsaken reason. I refuse to believe this, and am convinced that some asshole fashion blogger is attempting to fool as many people as possible.

    I thought spats were more for dress shoes - a 20s mobster kind of thing. Gaiters are more for hiking, and half chaps are for horse riding. His uniform looks like a horseback policeman of some sort to me. At any rate, it is arguing semantics now. Turn on image safe and gis for them. All three answers are right.

    A lot of fashion seems like that to me.

    The only time you should wear gaiters is if you're wading through a pit of rattlesnakes.
