It's pretty obvious this is going to be a big-ass franchise. Come one like:

    Viva Pinata (360)
    Viva Pinata (PC)
    Viva Pinata: Party Animals (360)
    Viva Pinata (DS)

    and a show!

    Hopefully we shall get a:

Viva Pinata platforming game for the 360 (or DS) very similar to Donkey Kong Country
Viva Pinata racing game for the 360 with downloadable tracks, carts etc. and xbox live

This indeed does have the potential to be awesome and I'm excited for Party Animals because the 360 is severely lacking a good party game since Fusion Frenzy 2 totally dropped the ball. :(

    So wait...

Microsoft are willing to bring Rare's work to other platforms, knowing that they'll profit from it?

for god's sake, perfect dark on virtual console

and yes, I know this only applies to consoles that aren't in direct competition and therefore that it's unlikely to happen when the wii's involved but hey, let a man dream

It's a pretty smart decision really, the original Viva Pinata would've been much more successful if it were released on a more mainstream system (like the DS). And it doubles as a marketing move as well, because if it's successful they'll be able to say "go get a 360 and you'll be able to play the other two Viva Pinata games!"

i can see this selling very, very well on the DS, as long as it doesn't stab you in the eye when you open the thing up. It's a game ideally suited to that kind of portability, much like Animal Crossing. Hot diggity damn.

Played some of that Viva Pinata party game at E3 and it's pretty terrible, but I loved the original. I have hopes for this.

if it does actually take off on the DS, i wonder how much that would boost sales on the 360, since there's probably a lot of people that avoided it because it was a bit of an unknown entity. If they suddenly find this fun new game on the DS, i could see a few people going "oh hey, i want more!"

I'm holding out hopes for a DS iteration of Killer Instinct, personally. It's not like it would be hard to corner the DS fighter market, at the moment. It's lacking in Street Fighters and Mortal Kombats, after all.

At any rate, this announcement gives me even more hope for future games. Diddy Kong Racing got me wondering, but Viva Pinata is a Rare-owned IP... This kind of ups the ante.

Yeah, no kidding. People here, such as myself, have imported the two best fighting games on the system; Bleach DS and Jump Ultimate Stars. While Bleach DS is getting an official north american release, I don't know about Jump or anything else. There's a pretty wide open market for some good 2D or even 3D fighters on the DS. Arc System Works could have had a hit with Guilty Gear DS, but they decided to make it a wonky party-ish fighting game instead of simply bringing Guilty Gear to the DS. A 3D fighter could work quite easily in the hands of an intelligent group of devs, but I'd really like to see some more good 2D fighters that look good and control easily as Bleach DS does.

    Um.

As far as Viva Pinata DS, I think this was a smart move in MS's part.

Didn't this franchise basically already bomb with the original 360 incarnation and a show nobody watches?

Not sure what the sales were like, but VP was one of the best titles for the 360 when released. Not sure it ever garnered the consumer attention it deserved though.

Anyway, on VP...it's one of the few 360 games older than a month beyond release that still gets play time here.

yeah, last i heard, the game really didn't sell well, despite being loved by most people that bought it. The presentation was too childish for most adult 360 owners (that, along with the tie-in children's show), whereas the game itself probably had too much depth for most kids to play on their own. I would hope, as i said, a DS version might sell a few more copies, as there's already a gargantuan install base, and from the titles, it seems like there'd be enough potential buyers for a game like this. That's where i'd be interested to watch sales of the 360 version, to see if they start going up once people have played it on the DS.

It feels like they went out of their way to make it seem like a cheap marketing tie-in. I don't have a 360 and so would have never bought it anyway, but the mere existance of the show biased me against the game. Franchises are things that have to be earned, not created out of nothing.

Kim insists that Viva Pinata sold well worldwide; that it sold a few hundred thousand copies. (Ed note: According to NPD statistics, Viva Pinata sold fewer than 200,000 units between November '06 and January '07.) Kim wouldn't name a number, but he asserted that higher sales numbers came from outside of North America.

35,000 is technically fewer than 200,000, I guess, but I'd think that means at least 150,000.

Huh. Well, considering Microsoft is letting Rare go nuts on the GBA/DS, this isn't too surprising.

And Microsoft is really, really trying to get Viva Pinata to take off, eh? Maybe the game will get a better reception on the DS.

Viva Pinata on the DS is brilliant. Not only does it make more sense for the audience, but it should control better as well. Manipulating the game with the 360 controller was often frustrating.

This is great news, but I'll probably stick with the PC version. I really liked the beautiful graphics of the original game, and I'm not sure how long I'd stick with the game without them. Of course, the gameplay may change entirely in the DS version, so it might be worth picking up anyway.

VP for 360 is a wonderful game. I could certainly see kids getting frustrated if they were trying to get ever animal into their garden, god knows I wanted to beat that hippo to death, but for just goofing around I'm sure they would love it.

I heard the show is doing pretty well and was picked up for a second season.

This is like microsoft's version of Pokemon, which also didn't earn shit it just tossed out a cartoon to go with the game and started to rake in the cash.

Not even remotely. It's closer to A sims type game, mixed with a bit of Harvest Moon, with a very big side of Monster Rancher. It's also my favorite game of last year.

The whole top down view thing here doesn't do much for me though...

Oh, and in reply to a previous post, there was no online.
