Kelly Clarkson Appreciation Thread

Kelly Brianne Clarkson first appeared on the popular music stage after winning the first season of American Idol in 2002, defeating the freakish-looking Justin Guarini in the finals. She is widely regarded as having a soulful, powerful voice.

Her first album, Thankful, has gone platinum twice in the U.S. and was met with warm, if not glowing, reviews. Creative control was largely out of Ms. Clarkson's hands at this point in her career.

For her second album, Breakaway, she took much more control, co-writing more of the songs and tweaking many others to shift the focus towards a more rock-oriented sound. This album is far and away her most successful, selling over 10 million copies worldwide. It's notable that this is the only album to have spent over a year straight in the top twenty of the Billboard 200charts. It spent 104 weeks overall on the Billboard 200 before finally losing eligibility for the chart.

Her third album, released June 26, 2007, has met with mixed reviews. My December is Kelly's furthest departure yet from her American Idol pop roots. Writing or co-writing every song on the album, Kelly went against her record label's wishes by refusing to place any of their "guaranteed hit singles" on the album. Sure enough, the album's sales have lagged behind both of the previous ones, but she has gained a lot of respect from fellow recording artists.

I applaud Kelly Clarkson for taking what could have been one-album career of bubblegum pop and turning it into the real deal. It has been said by several people in the industry that she can have a 30-year career if she wants. I think she can do it.

    I've watched From Justin to Kelly no less than 4 times. I sincerely believe there is a decent movie somewhere in there. Man, if only Justin wasn't Sideshow Bob in human form.

    Her singing is ok, but that movie she was forced to make was shit. I'm not sure if it was just bad writing, bad acting, or the fact that evolutionary disaster Justin was in it also.

    The show I was referring to was Philly, actually (I live in MD).

    Why was this tour canceled? Low album sales?
