either the seventh seal or wild strawberries is the best place to start if you want to get into bergman

wild strawberries is one of my top 10 favorites

Unique among many filmmakers of his general type, his work was not a jumble of fantastical, highly metaphorical imagery...his stories are the stories they appear to be on their face.

Disagree. That's like saying, "That painting of a skeleton is just a painting of a skeleton."

The stories were there, and they were interesting, but that was not the entirety of their substance.

And yeah, Mamet is way pretentious. I mean only art fags like Glengary Glenross or The Spanish Prisoner.

You comment about the strangeness of The Seventh Seal during an entire conversation about David Lynch?

    How bout David Mamet?

I have a buddy who I collaborate with on filmish stuff, and whenever he pronounces Mamet's last name the correct way (Mammitt), I say "Mahmay," as though he were mistaken. And then we share a nice, pretentious laugh, smoke some long, faggy cigarettes, and adjust our berets.

More on topic, I am incredibly saddened to hear of Bergman's passing. He was fantastic.

While I have heard of him, I have never seen an Ingmar Bergman movie. I did get a book of four of his screenplays at a used bookstore, though: Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal, Smiles Of A Summer Night, and The Magician.

    Bergman bores me, really.

I forget which movie of his I had to watch in class, it was like two chicks in a cottage but they were really the same and yeah.

    Bored me to tears.

I prefer Intolerance in its entirety to it.

Speaking of Mamet, I read that he said this about Ingmar Bergman.

“When I was young the World Theatre, in Chicago, staged an all-day Ingmar Bergman Festival. I went at ten o'clock in the morning, and stayed all day. When I left the theater it was still light, but my soul was dark, and I did not sleep for years afterwards.”

(From Roger Ebert's piece on Mr. Bergman)

That's like a three day long film. You must not like Bergman.

Speaking of Werner Herzog, I just got back from Rescue Dawn. It was pretty darn good. Not the best prison break movie that I've ever seen and not the best Herzog movie that I've ever seen, but still, it is worth seeing. Even more so than Harry Potter.

Bergman just never did it for me. I think I require at least a little spectacle. His movies seemed like they would be just as good as books. Or paintings.
Beautifully shot. Superbly acted. Brilliant ideas. Just ultimately not all that interesting to me.

No, I wasn't asked to speak at the funeral.
