Jetpacks?!!

Still a rumour but I can only imagine the joy if it proves true.

July 21st Update

Warhawk HOME Command Centre Screens! -- I noticed these posted up at PS3Fanboy. Full story here

I can't begin to say how excited I am about a "planning room" for campaigns in Warhawk. Hopefully this will solidify clan support and allow for lots of pre and post match hilarity!

July 1st Update (HAPPY CANADA DAY!) -- Trophies on the Way!:
Dylan Jobe wrote:
Hey Everyone!

Sorry I've been MIA -- we have been just cranking on our new updates for all of you; the v1.4 Patch, the v1.5 Patch and yes...our next booster pack.

The team and I have been watching the internets light up with discussions about the trophies in 240 and we thought it was good idea that you got an update straight from the horses mouth...me being the horse I guess :-)

So...YES, hot trophy action for Warhawk is on the horizon!

Since Warhawk released almost a year ago now, we will be patching-in support for the new trophy system. The reason I mention this is because there has been some talk about Warhawk trophies super-auto-magically going LIVE late tonight when the firmware is released. This is not the case. I know the press release stated that Warhawk trophies were going to be patched-in, but I just wanted to clarify for everyone.

We are right on the cusp of making some big announcements for Warhawk, including our upcoming patches and new booster-pack and while I can't talk about any of those right now (you will need to wait like a week or so) I can talk a bit about our trophy support in the v1.5 patch.

First off, there are 56 trophies included in the Warhawk v1.5 Patch. These are broken down into a couple of categories:

There are 10 trophies based on the Warhawk's current stats/rank/awards system. Like getting all your Bronze badges, attaining a specific rank, or earning a number of medals.
There are 34 trophies that are entirely *new* rewards based on Warhawks core game and not based on our current stats, ranks or other awards.
There are then 4 trophies per booster pack that are, of course, completely new awards.

Developing 56 new trophies was a really fun part of the v1.5 production cycle...but 10 of them are based on stats and awards that you, our community may have already earned -- so that's why we made sure that those 10 trophies based on our core stats system would be paid out retroactively. Meaning, that once the v1.5 patch is released, and if you've already earned the requirements for those trophies *bling*bling*bling* Warhawk will pay them out to you!

Lastly, cause I know everyone will be asking the obvious question, when is the v1.5 Patch coming out...we haven't even *officially* announced the v1.4 Patch!!!???

All I am allowed to say is that the v1.4 Patch is very, very, very close to being released and we actually developed the v1.5 Patch in parallel, but staggered, with the v1.4 Patch. The reason we did this is because there are stuffs in the v1.4 Patch that we wanted to get out to everyone ASAP...but the v1.5 patch isn't that far behind!

Hopefully that clears things up!

May 15th Update:

PA Night Tonight!

Also CONTEST with PRIZES!:

warhawkknivescr0.th.jpg
GGL and Sony Computer Entertainment America have teamed up to bring you an Official Warhawk Team Tournament, where the top squad can win Warhawk Limited Edition Statues from Gentle Giants Studios (ARV $50 each) and an in-game special weapon called the Champion’s Blade! This weapon is awarded exclusively to tournament winners and cannot be acquired any other way. It replaces the knife weapon in game and looks completely different so that everyone you encounter will know you won the tournament.

A Practice Ladder is open now, so jump in, form your team, and start challenging and playing opponents. On 5/27/08 the Practice Ladder will be reset (all squads’ records and points set to 0), and we will start the official Ladder Stage. You can challenge other squads, play matches, and move up and down the ladder. Points are awarded not only for winning, but also just for playing, so the more you play the better you will do! At the end of the Ladder Stage on 6/29/08, the top 32 squads will advance to a single-elimination bracket, and the winner of the Bracket Stage takes home the prize!

This is a team tournament, but you and your opponents can agree on the number of players on each side before each match. If you need help finding players for your squad, you can try our “Find/Form a Squad” forum. This prize tournament is open to U.S. residents only, but Warhawk players from anywhere in the world are welcome to join open competition ladders on GGL's Warhawk Game Group (http://www.ggl.com/groups/warhawk_game_group).

Warhawk is PS3 gaming at its finest – three ground vehicles, two air vehicles, three turrets, lots of unique vehicle weapons and gorgeous high definition game play combine to make this an awesome and heart pounding tournament. And if you love the game, you’ll love the unique Warhawk-specific prizing.

Join now, invite your friends, form your squad, challenge opponents, and play!

May 8th Update:

PA NIGHT TONIGHT! Starting at 9EST as per usual. I believe that some PA folks may be running a training event an hour before for those folks that want to learn advanced flight techniques ...

April 30th Update:

PA NIGHT TOMORROW NIGHT AT 9EST BITCHES! I don't care that you want to play GTA IV. You're playing fucking Warhawk.

April 26th Update --

A few of us are getting together tonght at 9 EST (in a half hour) to play on the new expansion map. Feel free to join in the fun!

April 24th 2nd Update --

NOOBTORIAL!

Basically I'm going to put up some information that everyone evetually finds out while playing Warhawk. Unfortunately for some of us, it took a very long time to find this stuff out and it will increase your enjoyment of the game tenfold. Some advice is basic, other stuff are things that noobs just don't find out until weeks (if not months) in. Since we're all at various levels of skill, and play together, it's important that everyone read this so on PA nights the newer among us can learn to hold their own in the sky:
Bamelin wrote:
#1. Change your flight mode to PRO FLIGHT in the options.
#2. Double clicking boost gives you a turbo boost
#3. Holding both boost and brake while turning will allow you to bank (turn) your Warhawk sharply
#4. When locked on with a TOW missle, don't fire right away after locking on ... (turbo) boost as close as you can get THEN fire giving enemy no time to deploy chaf (no warning signal), and no time to dodge (yes you can dodge missles, shaking the missle lock -- see video link below)
#5. When enemy has locked on and you are out of chaff, use (turbo) boost and go through environmental obstacles (ridges, etc) to cause enemy missle to be taken out

I bolded #1 because it is critical. PRO FLIGHT is the only way to play Warhawk IMHO if you plan on moving up the ranks. You can change your flight settings in game in the options while in game.

These 5 things will improve your kill/death ratio tremendously, allow you to escape when being targetted (sometimes), and in general improve your overall flight performance while dogfighting.

Finally perhaps one of the most important video's related to Warhawk you will ever watch:

How to Dodge Missles (Thanks for link Malachai)

Alot of this stuff I learned over several months of playing ... hell I didn't even know there was a turbo boost for the first two weeks of playing haha.

Learning how the pro's dodge missles is perhaps one of the single most Warhawk lessons that will keep you alive in the sky.

April 24th Update: Another successful PA night with tons of death, destruction, laments and knashing of teeth. In the skies. =)

Possibility of doing a Broken Mirror expansion PA night over the weekend ... will post update if it is going to happen.

April 23rd -- PA Game at 9EST tonight. Beeb999 (PSN nick) hosting, server "PA Hawkin". Password is "Wang"

April 21st Update: PA Night this week is happening on Wednesday to help a few people that can't normally make it on Thursdays. Last week was our best night ever, let's do even better this week. Vanilla Warhawk (no expansions), we'll decide on a server (official or otherwise) by Wednesday and post in thread.

April 17th update: Most successful Warhawk PA night ever. Tons of PA'ers shooting the fuck out of each other and laughing all the while.

New Broken Mirror Expansion rocks too. Highly recommended.

April 16th update: We're still doing Vanilla PA night at 9 EST on the 17th, don't think that because we forgot the expansion hits the same day ANY of you fuckers are getting out of PA night. =)

Vaporfield Glacier is a vast, windswept valley filled with huge chunks of glacial ice, raised highways, deep chasms, with military bases and research facilities scattered around the frigid landscape. At the heart of the battlefield lies Olsavik Village, a small abandoned town whose people have long since left their homes after years of bloody conflict in the Eucadian War.

NEW APC CAR!

DylanJobe wrote:
APCs – They have a ton of features so here’s a quick YGG summary:

APCs support a driver and 6 other troops in “pop-up” hatches that allow troops to use their own weapons, making the APC like a customizable weapons platform.

APCs act as mobile spawn points for your team so you can setup field bases, help coordinate ground assaults, and spawn directly into them as another player is driving them around.

When you spawn into an APC, your troop is rewarded with an additional weapon based on an internal loot-table.

APCs can activate a huge shield by placing an E-POD.

APCs have a boost ability that not only allows them to traverse distances more quickly, but it also acts as a ram-attack that obliterates other vehicles (except the tank because of its super-heavy armor).

Warhawk Version 1.3 Update confirmed release on April 2nd!! (at end of trailer)

Warhawk v1.3 Patch details

+ Posted by Dylan Jobe // Game Director, Warhawk

I’m excited to announce our new, and FREE, update for Warhawk – the v1.3 Patch!

There are 5 key additions in this update that add a ton of value for our current and future Warhawk players. First, I’ll cover the 2 new troop items that we are adding to the game.

2267487220_3c83f200dc.jpg

So far, Warhawk players have logged over 7.3 million hours of gameplay and have scored over 206 million kills! And during this time, we’ve keenly observed the battles, looking for opportunities for us to further balance Warhawk’s gameplay and over-arching “combat economy”. The result of our observations comes in the form of two upgrades for ground troops – to help promote teamwork, lengthen troop lifespan, and expand Warhawk’s fast-paced, emergent gameplay that players around the world have come to love.

2267487102_b3c6681ce8.jpg

This is gonna be a long post and I want to give you all a rundown of the new equipment but I can’t ramble on for pages about it so I’ll just write a quick summary here. I can always follow-up with you guys later in the comments….you know how I love to respond to comments :-)

2266698131_d2a0489b6a.jpg

#1 Mechanic’s Field Wrench:

As you might expect, this piece of equipment is used to repair vehicles. Once you get the pickup, you swing it just like the combat blade. Then, just walk up to, or onto an allied vehicle and “whack” it with the wrench. It repairs wicked fast so it’s very effectively during combat. On the offensive side, not only is it still a one-hit-kill against troops, but it can be used to damage enemy vehicles as well!

2266698105_8a0295cb98.jpg

#2 Bio-Field Generator:

To use a Bio-Field, grab the pick up and throw it down like a proximity mine. It sticks to walls, ceilings, anything…including vehicles. Then, if any ally stands within its bio-reactive field, his health will quickly regen. Alternatively, and this is where some neat tactics emerge, if an enemy walks into the bio-field (yes, bio-fields are color coded), they’ll take damage – their lungs sizzling like bacon….mmmmm bacon.

2266697847_e0bfa24109.jpg

This new equipment makes life as a ground troop more balanced, and we’re really looking forward to seeing how the battlefield changes once the patch is released!

2267487138_74668ca9d1.jpg

#3 HOME Game Launching:

Yeah Baby…So our HOME integration is coming along nicely and this update includes a great, and much needed feature for Warhawk. With the release of v1.3 patch, players will be able to form groups, meet in their apartments, discuss tactics, and then launch a game of Warhawk…all together!

When you’re in your apartment, all you do is whip-out your virtual PSP, select ‘create game’ and pick Warhawk. From there, you get to start your own player server, pick a game rotation, set server options and then…BAM !! Launch Warhawk with all of your friends!! You can also pick to not make your game viewable to the other Warhawk players around the world, or you can make it a ‘public’ game that puts all of your friends into the server together, and leaves open slots for other global Warhawk players join.

Games launched from HOME show up in the global games list in an attactive gold color.

2267487192_bc29896d06.jpg

Now this is just the beginning of what we’re gonna to be doing with HOME and there’s some really neat stuff on the horizon. I’d love to show you more of the cool HOME stuff that we’re working on but I suspect I’d get a PR-shank to the spine…or possibly a lung.

So I gotta say that I’m actually super relieved that we’re putting in *REAL* legit value for players and *NOT* making HOME a portal for SONY to jam branding and marketing schwag down player’s throats!

As a gamer, I’m excited *and* relieved to see the direction HOME is taking.
#4 New VOIP Options:

We have also received a lot of feedback about VOIP stuff. There were a couple of features that players really wanted, and hopefully this gives them a big chunk of their crazy, crazy VOIP desires. :-P

We now allow players to select between PTT and Open-Mic. Players can also tune the voice-activation level so they don’t accidentally broadcast their girlfriend or boyfriend blabbering-on in the background. Players also now get to more clearly see who’s talking. It’s displayed on the right side of the screen. And yes, the picture below is correct. We also now support an “all-talk” server option so that you can enable cross-team trash talk.

2267487396_7935c0c44a.jpg

What else…oh yeah, we now display which player is speaking at the score screen too. And…we let you pick players from the score screen to mute/un-mute their VOIP.
#5 New Paint Schemes & Insignias:

If you’re an avid Warhawk player and/or read this blog with any regularity, then you know that we are sponsoring a contest that allows players to submit their own, custom, paint schemes for the Nemesis and Warhawk. We’re also allowing players to submit custom insignias too. We’ll be picking the winners and including these new customizations with the v1.3 patch.

Now I’m not posting these because they have already won…but these are some neat designs and I wanted the blog readers to see some of the great paint schemes that have been coming in.

2267487340_6196846951_m.jpg2267487370_87a374ced5_m.jpg

2267487302_faee4bfc62_t.jpg2267487278_6850c35763_t.jpg2267487246_3a526503e0_t.jpg

And one last thing…we want insignias too. Send us your insignias…and please DO NOT just scan something out of a magazine. Seriously!

Well that’s it for now, there are some other features in the new patch too, like some new server options, but we’re not sure if we’re going to ship them or not. They need more play testing.

So this patch is a big update for Warhawk: New troop equipment, HOME Game Launching, VOIP updates and player-created customizations!

~guy in back of room yells “yeah, yeah….but when’s it coming out”~

We’re testing the Warhawk v1.3 patch right now and we’ll update you on timing in another post. Sorry I can’t be more specific…you know how it goes. As soon as I have the “official” release date, I’ll let everyone know.

As always…
rock on

March 12th Update:

Match tonight (Wednesday), 360Arcadians and Penny Arcaders!!! We're taking over a Sony Server so look for clanmates and buddies on your friends list! I believe the match is starting around 7 or 8 CST.

March 08th 2008 Update -- Effective immediately, all PA'ers are welcome to PA Warhawk night starting on Thursday's at 8 CST. Come join us as we blow the shit out of each other and laugh about it afterwards!

February 28th Update -- holy shit this looks awesome. Ever played in a sandbox with your friends, lining up toy soliders and planning out your strategies? Well now you're going to be able to do this for real with 7of your friends, before entering a Warhawk match.
Kotaku wrote:
Sure, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Resistance: Fall of Man may have wicked cool feature sets for PlayStation 3's Home, but it's actually Warhawk's planned game portal that has us most excited. According to our sources, the Home lobby for the Incognito dogfighter will serve as a "war room" where up to eight players can meet to discuss their strategy for an upcoming match.

Sure, you could do that with text or voice chat, but it sounds like the developers have gone the extra mile to make planning your battles even cooler.

Using a three-dimensional "sand table" replication of the level, Warhawk players are said to be able to lay out their strategies in a properly scaled space. They'll even be able to place little army men avatars around the map to envision their formations, something we hope they can also do with teeny tiny Warhawk planes, tanks and Jeeps.

The Warhawk war room is said to also serve as a launchpad for games, thankfully, so jumping into a match shouldn't require leaving the Home interface.

This is one of the coolest additions, in my personal opinion, to come to Home and the kind of thing that we hope is replicated and improved upon by other developers for their team-based titles.

February 22nd Update (again courtesy of Unco-ordinate) -- New expansion!!!!!:
Warhawk is not something Incognito is looking to turn away from anytime soon. Speaking with Dylan Jobe, game director for Warhawk, we learned that Warhawk will continue to be supported through a number of booster packs and is likely not the last we'll see of the franchise.

Operation Broken Mirror is a booster pack that is confirmed for release in the future and will feature one new vehicle -- an APC that acts as a portable spawn point and equipment producer -- and a new battlefield. New game modes are also in the works, but they will not be a part of the booster pack. Instead, game modes will be released for free and integrated into patches and updates.

But what about content beyond the plans we have heard about? "As long as the community exists and as long as there is an appetite for playing the game and new content, that's good for us and we want to try to do split deliveries -- you can always get free stuff and you always have to option to buy certain content," said Jobe. Basically Incognito is willing to support the game as long as the players are willing to make it worth their while.

Single-player was dropped from the game, but that doesn't mean it won't ever happen. "We made a strategic decision to go multiplayer only and I would be against doing a set of single-player expansion packs for Warhawk," said Jobe, but, "if we look at doing single-player in the future [it would be] related to a new product." He also added that Incognito is interested in taking Warhawk beyond the current PS3 title, stating that, "if there is an opportunity that presents itself for us to further the franchise then we'll definitely take advantage of it."

Single-player may or may not be in production, but it's good to know that Incognito is going to continue to support the awesome multiplayer that makes up the current iteration of Warhawk.

Earlier today, Sony Computer Entertainment announced an expansion pack to Warhawk. Titled Operation: Omega Dawn, the new content will be available next month in the PlayStation Store. The pack will feature the vertically-oriented Omega Factory, a new industrial night-time map in which you'll be able to continue games of Team Deathmatch, Zone and CTF within what Sony touts as the biggest map to date for the game. Besides a new map, O:OD will feature the KT-424 Combat Dropship, which can carry a vehicle and six soldiers at once. In addition, the five original layouts in the standalone game have been modified to accommodate the KT-424's vast size. Pricing and release date, however, have yet to be announced.

1UP confirmed with Sony Computer Entertainment America today that the Blu-ray disc retail release of the online multiplayer game Warhawk will come with an MSRP of $59.99. That sixty dollar buy-in may seem a bit high for the multiplayer-only game—which will also see a PlayStation Network release—but the brick and mortar edition will come with some nice bonuses in the form of a Jabra BT125 Bluetooth headset and disc-based special features.

The Jabra BT125 regularly retails for $44.99 but can often be purchased at a considerable discount. It's highly recommended that the Bluetooth headset not be worn out of doors, mostly based on concerns that dudes who wear Bluetooth headsets in public generally look like douchebags.

There's still no word on the cost of the PlayStation Network version which is expected to be released on or around the retail version's August 28th ship date.

It does indeed. It's the one game for the PS3 I really REALLY wish wasn't exclusive.

I've noticed that PS3 MP games tend to have more players/people per room/session as compared to the 360. Is there a reason for this?

What's with comparing it to Crimson Skies? It's not like Crimson Skies was the first flight game on consoles, there was the original Warhawk...

Anyway, yeah this game is probably my most anticipated game at the moment. It's probably not going to get me to buy a PS3 straight away, but I'm thinking of picking one up next month (unless rumours start flying around about a price drop, in which case I'll wait).

I'll be picking up the Blu-Ray version when I do buy it though, I need a headset and I prefer to have the game on a disc than on a hard drive. This'll be the case with all PSN/Blu-Ray releases, so I'm probably going to have a few headsets in a couple of years...

Bamelin: It's mostly because Sony hosts dedicated servers for most of their games (Resistance, Motorstorm and Warhawk), while Microsoft relies on peer-to-peer networking with Xbox Live (though there's a couple of upcoming games that are supposed to have dedicated servers).

You'd think with the whole sony=free and live=$$$, that it'd be the other way around

With all their ranking and stat-tracking on Live, not providing servers for games and forcing people to host their own, giving an advantage to the host, has always filled me with a smoldering rage. I won't even go into multiplayer achievements here.

Fuck that garbage. If I had huge piles of money to throw around I'd probably hop on this, it looks nice.

Maybe this game will fill the hole in my soul that the cancellation of Propeller Arena left.

Online arcade-y dogfighting? Yes pls. I'll just have to deal with the fact that it doesn't have P-51s, P-38s, etc.

If the online-only Warhawk is successful, it's quite possible they'll start development on the single player campaign again.

Anyway, you know what I'm looking forward to? Customising my warhawk. The few custom warhawks I've seen have looked pretty awesome.

I might've gone a bit overboard back there. I vaguely remembered it being pretty awesome but it looks like you choose a skin, then a decal and then can edit the decal:
    warhawk-20070306032749975.jpg

It's still a nice touch but hopefully they've made it a little more customizable since March (which is when they released that picture).

If this is as fun as Crimson Skies I'll buy a PS3. Why? Because MS hasn't given me Crimson Skies 2 yet. Or 3, if you count the PC version as 1.
God I loved me some Crimson Skies.

Why hasn't there been a sequel to Crimson Skies? That was the game that sold me on Live. If Warhawk is anywhere close to that sort of experience I'll have to rethink my plans on waiting a couple years on a PS3.

Dedicated servers would be damn nice I hope they figure that out at some point. On the up side Microsoft never shuts down dedicated servers like EA and Sony do. Thus you can always play the games multiplayer.

Warhawk looks good I can't wait to try it out.

This game looks wonderful, and I can't wait to play it. My only problem is its release date. It's 2 weeks after Persona 3 comes out, which I will probably still be playing by then. It's also only 2 weeks after Lair comes out, which means my girlfriend will still be playing that. And, it's 2 weeks before Heavenly Sword, which means by the time I'm done with P3, I'll want to get Heavenly Sword. Also, and this is probably the biggest thing: Warhawk comes out exactly the day after school starts again. :( Why oh why couldn't this have been released at the beginning of summer.

because while not the first, Crimson Skies was somewhat popular with the Xbox Live community, and probably one of the first online multiplayer aerial combat games on consoles.. right?

actually, they are focusing on vehicle / aircraft combat - they didn't want people to rely on being on foot as much as say... the battlefield franchise.

I used Crimon Skies in the title mainly because it was a wildly popular aerial based game on the original Xbox.

That and it made for a catchy OP title. :P

I did try and look for some good screens but it just felt that nothing did the game justice .... the movies really show what the game is capable of .... this is the first PS3 title to make me "want/wish I had" a PS3.

$60 for an online-only game (especially one that looks like a budget game, in terms of graphics) is just too much to ask. This was Shadowrun's problem as well. If It was $30, maybe.

The headset included retails for 40 USD. So the game could be 20 USD, or there-abouts. That's probably what the cost will be around on the PSN.

No. If you want to pick it up for $30, then you'll want to buy the downloadable version (assuming the downloadable one is $30).
