Although we've been expecting this, it kinda sucks that once again, Live games are unplayable because EA wants to redirect everyone to their own servers instead of letting Microsoft run them. And some of these games haven't been out for too long.
90% sports games, which is how they sell the new versions, and this isn't like the first time. They do this every year to their sports games across every platform.
I know what your saying, but still when one picks up a game they do so with the belief that the company selling it to them will support their own product. This is doubley true if one picks up a title specifically for online play.
The move with the 360 sports titles is particularly disgusting to me, it hasn't even been 2 years yet.
What a great way to force your customers to buy your latest yearly sports game update, kill off the online for the older versions! I'm happy I'm not affected by this kill. At least Burnout Revenge for 360 is still alive, which is currently the only online EA game I own.
This really annoys me as someone who pays for live. I understand for the PS2 versions, but when I'm paying for an online service, I expect to be able to play an online game for as long as I want.

Even counting Burnout, that list doesn't total my ire for Konami for killing off MGO after just a year. And then saying "olol play the PSP one online instead".
Damn EA. Hopefully other games come in to compete with them. I remember reading where someone said that EA had actually planned new changes and features in the Madden series, but once they got the license, they threw it all out and slapped new graphics on the old engine.

What the fuck.
I've heard that same thing. And I believe every word of it.

See but the thing is there isn't an online service already available for the PS2 and konami is the ONLY company choosing not to use it, so that it can cancel the service and force people to buy their new game.

I can assure you that this is not even approaching true.

They cancel last years madden live abilities thus forcing you to buy the same game again with a new box every year cause other wise whoops we're sorry but live service has been canceled. Very clever.

Apparently EA is just the distributor on that, so I don't think they'll be forced to use EA online as their servers..
They're just the distributor/publisher of quite a few third party titles however. Aren't they handling Mercenaries 2, just like OddWorld Stranger and Timesplitters Future Perfect? I'll never get to see all those created contents, lost to the wind now. They killed off servers for games that have no sequels as well as their sports games. Its just a dick move as usual, I'm glad to buy used versions of their games because I know it cuts them.
I won't be buying Army of Two though even if the COop FUCKING REWLS because they'll just kill off the servers 6 months later for the sequel.
EA was the publisher for Timesplitters though, which is why I'm guessing they made Free Radical use their servers. I've heard that the servers for Timesplitters 2 PS2 (Eidos) are still up for map share - wtf.
If Rockstar had to recall all copies of GTA SA to re-mark them as AO, why doesn't EA have to recall all copies of those games and delete the language about online play on the back of the box?

Because the manuals explicitly state that the on-line services of a game can be withdrawn with little to no notice.

Now wait ... there's no mention of the PS2 version of Tiger '06, which is the one my buddies and I play. Does this mean they're killing the MS ones but not the Sony ones? That's ... weird. I should hop online and see if it's still active now or not.

But by the time I've opened the shrinkwrap to get to the manual, I can no longer return the game to the store for a refund. Most stores only let you return opened games as defects in exchange for the same title.

I'm fairly certain it's on the back of the box, too. Small type, but it's there. I think it's something along the lines of "will give notice 90 days before servers shut down" or something to that effect.
As someone who follows the Tiger Woods games, I'm painfully aware of EA's habits of shuttering the servers.
I'm confused how they can shut down the 360 version. Those aren't on EA servers, it's peer-to-peer, and the matchmaking is coded into the game, so how can they kill it?

They can take down the master server list.
Can you clarify for me, I wasn't aware that servers were used in any capacity on 360...I thought it was just xbox talking to xbox with the built in matchmaking and that it was handled entirely on the users end. Are there servers being used?

Dunno about their sports franchise, but to play Burnout Revenge 360 online I have to connect to the EA server first.
EA refused to make their xbox games online unless they can host their own server (so that in two years they can drop it and force you to update)
Microsoft said no, until they saw that more than 1million users play their EA games online on the PlayStation Network.
At the time there was only 750,000 xbox live subscriptions.

God they're fuckers, they make Sony's PR look positively competent. Do you think EA knows they're a bunch of dicks, and just don't care?
we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other
While it's true that they are indeed fuckers, this move isn't THAT bad. It'd take larger assfuckery than this to trounce Sony PR blunders.
meh.

Tiger Woods - because seriously, who buys this EVERY year? It's golf!
Burnout - come on!
Affects 4 of my games. Lame.
Shame about Rock Band, going to buy that regardless.
And when Rockband 2 comes out...
Knowing EA, you'll probably have to re-buy the instruments as well.

This reminds me that Tribes is being shut down too.
These companies should be forced to offer a refund or exchange for a similar product IMO. :x
Fuck em all. Blizzard. Thats how you support your games!
