id announces Quake Arena for Xbox Live Arcade

The finest railgun in the business will be making its way to Xbox Live Arcade as id announces Quake Arena for Microsoft's download service. Previously, this release was merely a rumor fueled by a surprise listing on the ESRB website, so it's great to finally have an official word to go on.

Also true to the ESRB listing is that Pi Studios -- best known for their work on the Call of Duty series and the upcoming Mercaneries 2: World in Flame -- is behind the port.

No comment as to when Quake Arena will see release was made by id.
I think this is pretty awesome.

Neat, although I wonder if they're going to do the multiplayer service through the game's original server interface or through live?

is this actually going to be a 3d FPS? Not like the Wing Commander Arena, and change the game into something else? Some unsullied Quake 3 would be pretty neat on XBLA.

I played this for hours on Dreamcast online and loved it.

That's right Dreamcast. I played the demo on PC, but then I only played the Dreamcast version. It worked great on a pad. And you could use a mouse if you wanted, if I remember right.

It's already been done on the Dreamcast, which doesn't even have a second analog stick.

Oh man, I remember that DC version lets you play against PC players. That was a recipe for pure pain.

Yep, the Dreamcast version was great.

Unreal Tournament has worked well on consoles, too, so twitch-style FPS isn't a new concept for consoles.

I don't know what the point of this is. Quake 3 has been open source for awhile. I don't think there is a lot of demand for a copy of Quake 3 people can only play with a gamepad. And, you know, costs money.

I'm pretty sure iD has not released the game for free, since you still have to pay for it from their website, as well for titles as far back as Wolf 3D and Doom.

    I'm pumped for this indoodly!

The game's source code is completely open and free (under GPL) for anyone to tear apart and monkey around with. All the game's other assets are not. Hence, Quake 3 Arena, as an entire game, is not freeware.

There was a project that aimed to recreate the game using completely free assets though.

Even though I didn't mention it earlier, I'm buying this on day one.

This game did jump pads right, and IMHO, no one else has quite nailed it since.

Guys. The much bigger, internet consuming mega popular megaton, from Quakecon is Quake Zero.

    This is the entire game:

    Quake 3.

    Played in an internet browser.

    Completely free.

Just boggles the mind how now, in 2008 when it comes out, we will be playing Quake 3 in firefox. Insanity.

I wonder if they'll bring back what the DC did. (Console vs PC)
I just hope if they do, they'll up the player limit (DC was limited to FOUR players. CTF sucked.)

I don't know about that. Serious Sam had entire levels that revolved around jump pads.

Oh wow Serious Sam, good call! I totally forgot that one, seeing as I've never played the entire thing. I know, I know...

Is this going to be a port of Quake 3 Arena? Like, with the same levels and everything? Or will they pick and choose, or just have all new levels, or what?

My Q3A CD is buried in a storage box right now, so I can't really check its own MBs, but with all those textures what size do you think the download for this new XBLA title will be?

I played this game to death on the PC. Even over 56k it ran great. On the DC? It played like crap. Don't get me wrong, it was still fun, but Quake 3 was always way more twitchy. At least with the way I played it, it required Mouse and Keyboard.

What a great idea for an addition to XBLA. Big :^: from me, I've always been a big QIII fan!

Man, just another great reason as for why I'm picking up a 360 this fall :)

Well, if you played on the DC against other DC players, it works great, because everyone's on a level playing field.

Nobody's expecting someone with a gamepad to play at the same level as they can on a KBAM.

But modern FPS gamepad controls have improved greatly since the DC port of Q3, and even on the PS2 it works more than well enough to be a great game on XBLA.

This is good news, I love the Quake series, is this the "newest" classic on XBLA?

One question though, where the hell is Doom2, Doom is easily the best Arcade purchase Ive made.
