Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the [BOOK THREAD]
Feet of Clay
Thud!
Guards! Guards!
Thief of Time
Night Watch
Soul Music
The Fifth Elephant
Small Gods
Jurassic Park
The Lost World
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
and I just got from the Library:
Frankenstein
On a Pale Horse
Looking forward to those two, started Frankenstein and I'm really hoping its not as dry as Dracula was, but oh well, if it is I'll trudge through just to say Ive read it. Ive heard great things about that Piers Anthony novel, so that should be a good read.
So what about you guys? What have you been burying your noses into this summer? Whats next on the chopping block?
All my local libraries suck and I didn't want to spend money on books so I've only read a few things this summer- Shadow of the Giant , Man in the High Castle, finally got around to reading 1984, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Rama II, aaaand I can't remember any others at the moment. My dad just finished Garden of Rama so I'll probably start that soon.
This summer I've read The Road, American Gods, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and parts of The Assault on Reason and Thank You for Smoking. I'm going to start on I Am Legend today.

I found Volume Two of the Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes at a flea market for like 2 dollars, but I left it in my apartment so Ill have to wait on starting those. Looking forward to it though.

I just finished The Lord of the Rings for the second time and have started reading the Silmarallion for the first time
Also I finally found For Whom the Bell Tolls at the Library so I'm reading that too.
Just finished Harry Potter and the Death of Harry Potter.
Honestly? I hate the fandom of this series, and the last two books were kind of "meh," but this one? Definitely a great end to the series. As much as I've bitched about HP and Rowling in the past, I think she did a bang-up job on this one.
Now re-reading Stephen King's ON WRITING, a great book no matter what the reason you're reading it.
Also this summer have finished:
- Chuck Pahluniak's DIARY (I liked it, but many probably will not.)
- Years Best Fantasy & Horror, 2004
- Stephen King's LISEY'S STORY (Probably the best thing he's written in years.)
- Koontz's THE HUSBAND (Koontz is the Snickers Bars of literature - this one is no exception.)
- Re-read HST's HELLS ANGELS (Pure, unmitigated Hunter S. Thompson. Cannot be lauded enough.)
I should be through all these already, but in the last two weeks I've been working on A Song of Ice and Fire. I finished up the last half of the first and have made it halfway into the second book so far.
San Fran is an awesome place to find cheap used books. My recent trip to Green Apple and I was able to snag a dozen books for under 50$.
So far I've read:
J-Pod - Douglas Coupland
Hemingway - For Whom the Bell Tolls
Hemingway - A Farewell to Arms
Milan Kundera - The Art of the Novel
Thomas Wolfe - Look Homeward Angel
Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughter-House-Five
Paul Auster - The Solitude of Loneliness
and I'm in the middle of reading:
Paul Auster- The New York Trilogy: City of Glass/Ghosts/The Locked Room
Antoine de Saint-Exupery - Le Petit Prince
Martin Page - How I Became Stupid

I am just currently reading through 1984 for the first time. It is AWESOME. Very powerful.
Other recent reads... The Night of the Triffids (yes, night), it was fairly good. Not enough triffid action though. And not as unnerving as the original book. But I have to agree with some reviews I read that it was indeed written in a close style to that of John Wyndham, which is good.
I've also been reading Peter Hamilton, I think he does some great sci fi. Damn those books are long though.
I read this probably not quite well-known book for school, and was surprised when I ended up enjoying it.

Also, I'm plowing through "On Free Choice of the Will" by St. Augustine. I've sworn to myself I'll finish it, no matter how dry it is.
No no, read that again.
The Fifth ELEPHANT
It's a Discworld book and its pretty awesome.

My wife and I have no idea how the fuck they're going to turn it into a feature-length film. There's maybe 20 minutes worth of writing in there.

I found 1984 to be excruciatingly boring. Maybe it's just me.
I've been reading Discworld books lately. I can't believe I didn't start reading these earlier, they are fantastic.
