i love the painterly style and i love women, so this is win win.
Question : do you start your pictures by setting the BG color first? Im just guessing.
so far your latest two are good enough for fashion week, but the whitey girl right hand bothers me, something to do with the finger poses. but that just me nitpicking.
highlander: haha thanks. I know this is corny, but the best advice I could give anyone is to just keep practicin.
greatnation: You would think highlander of all people would have known that! I only ifddle with opacity, as photoshop 5 doesn't have flow
salt: Ah yeah that one was definately more fun to do. Only took a couple hours too.
IZRA: I usually do a really rough sketch in photoshop, then set that layer to multiply and lay some base colors. Then I flatten the rough sketch and colors then just paint the rest on one layer. I don't like to play with that many layers, because the more you have the less control you get.
original sketch.
colors underneath it
I like to design the clothes, but when I just focus on that I really don't put a background or anything so they make really shitty illustrations. I need to find a way to balance that.
As someone with a general hostility towards attractive naked women, let me just say that you're one of my favorite artists ever.
There are a number of things that I need to buy but don't have the money for, and I would still buy a book of your art without even thinking about it.
So, basically, you rock. (Not like you haven't heard it before.)
highlander: haha thanks. I know this is corny, but the best advice I could give anyone is to just keep practicin.
Heh, in order for me to keep practicing, I would have to start practicing first.
That's not to say I don't practice my artwork...I try to draw every single day. But I draw in mostly a comic-book style (since my ultimate goal is to draw comic books for a living...). I've never really attempted this sort of painterly stuff. It's absolutely beautiful, and I would love to be able to do it myself. I wouldn't even know where to begin, though.
Wakkawa, obviously your stuff is great. But if I had to complain about something it would be that you seem to paint the same chick over and over again. And while I do mean her features somewhat, I am talking about the overall. They have the same type. I am also a little confused as to what you are aiming for. Are you aiming for an anime-ish look? I wouldn't say they look like anime, but they sort of feel like they are leaning in that direction.
Anyways, that would be my complaint. They start to feel monotonous because they all seem so similar.
Wakka has been drawing ladies and enriching the lives of PA lurkers like myself since time immemorial. See Wakkas pics are not about the girls anymore, each one is an experiment, in color, technique whatever. These are actually fresh in terms of wakka drawings/ paintings, we rarely see hunched figures or muted backgrounds like in the first one. We also don't usually see the weird ass costumes and tatoos of the second one. Or just a straight up fashion drawing like the third.
Wakkawa is amazing not because he tries to realllllly push the concepts with every drawing (which he does well), but just cuz he switches it up just enough to keep himself interesting and drawing all the GODDAMN time.
Cruising Wakkas threads makes me perfectly happy drawing hypermuscular dudes every night, because I know that as long as I'm still interested in it and it keeps me coming back, doesn't so much matter what you're drawing, as long as you switch up how you do it.
Wakka: Did you ref your own nose for the first one? Looks kind of like the one pic I've seen
I lurve the second one.
Am I the only person who gets a Kelly Osbourne vibe from the fourth one?
MufasaJoe, I am just trying to look out for Wakka here. I mean, I think diversifying his subject matter could only improve his work on the whole. If you disagree, you are wrong. And it's like I said before, I love his..(or wait...her?) work but seeing a wider variety would make it easier to judge what he or she really needs to work on. Obviously Wakka is great, but that doesnt mean they are the greatest ever and have no room for improvement.
i have the sneaking suspicion that wakk in fact does draw other shit. I have given him flak for the girls in the past, but ive gotten over it i think. I think of the female body now, in Waks work, as just a blank slate to talk about light, color, and composition.
I love the second picture and pretty much everything about it.
The faces in pictures 1 and 4 don't sit right with me. In the first picture, the nose seems a bit big, even for the "looking from below" angle. In the fourth picture, her face just looks a bit zombish. Maybe that was the intention though...
Overall, amazing work as usual. I've always been curious about how long these pictures take for you to draw. Please don't say something ridiculous like 10 hours. My biggest fear is that I won't have the patience for works like this. Then again, that may change completely as I get more proficient.
Wakkawa has said in the past he just does these things, paint overs of a drawing he did, in about 30 minutes to an hour. Some stuff he spends more time on I would guess, but that is something I remember reading in the past. I have been a fan of his for as long as I have been reading the forums; Wakkawa, Sonic, Mr. Dave, blah too many names ... and if I am dying to see any new work I just peruse his web site. He has a lot of stuff up there he just doesn't post.
The LittleMan In The Boat on
I don't suffer from Insanity. I enjoy every minute of it.
I love these. Really fantastic work. The woman with her back facing us is my favorite. The greens and reds you chose make an excellent palette. I would like to see more attention to the backgrounds in the green and red woman and the blond with the black jacket.
And I stared at the second one a little too long, I think.
I wish I could do artwork like this. I haven't drawn anything in...about three years. O_o
The style of these reminds me of one of my friend's, just a little. Or perhaps its just the semi-nude girls that I'm thinking of :...: Anywhoo, I have the sudden urge to ask her permission to post her stuff in this board...

permission or not you shouldn't do it. Just encourage her to join herself and post her own stuff.
Great work Wakkawa. I too would like to see a little more variety in content though.

You're probably right. I don't speak to her often, but I'll PM her anyway.
lyrium: thanks! I doubt ill be selling any books soon though
Gremo: eh not right now. I was thinkin of doing that on DA, but that just doesn't seem worth it.
cakemilks: I tend to draw what I think looks good, or what I think is beautiful. These are the things I enjoy drawing. The main problem is if I don't draw something that doesn't thrill me, I barerly take it beyond the rough color stage. Unless I am doing an assignment or commission of course. Also, I do like to have a little bit of anime in my stuff, because I just like the way it looks.
Joe: Yeah I do reference myself a lot of the time. I feel bad using someone elses photo in my drawings, because it just feels like I'm ripping them off. So a good majority of my faces and poses come from my mind, which is probably another contributing factor of what cakemilks is talking about.
greatnation: Thats pretty much right. I just like to do things I enjoy, but I can still take that knowledge and apply it elsewhere. My classwork is pretty much all figure drawing and stilllifes, which is mind numbing.
anable: Aye yeah, the first one's nose is a bit weird. Ill try and get that one fixed up. On the 4th, I was definately goin for a living dead girl look. Also, these probably take like like 6 or so hours each. probably max is 10 or so. By then though, I lose interest and decide to move on. I also liike to keep my work lose, as I really love brush strokes and seeing how form is built.
littleman: thanks! Some things I can do really fast, others, takes me a little bit longer.
hijinks: Those were basically just fashion designs. Though I do admit I need to get some practice on architecture and the like. I haven't done a picture like that in awhile.
saved: thanks! There is some pretty sweet stuff in that link.
Also I was wondering what kind of stuff you guys would like to see. I wouldn't mind some suggestions here, haha.
On this one I'm going to sharpen up the scales on the fish to add some more contrast from her skin. This would be alot easier if I had custom brushes though Damn photoshop 5.
EDIT: added the scales, but I think I need to fix up a few other things. LIke say, the proportions.

1. Holy crap!
and..
2. Can you teach me how to do that? :P
Looking great wak-
question, do you fiddle more with the flow or the opacity?

Edit : Also, I think the first one you posted is my favorite out of everything i've seen from you. I would love to see more done like this.

reminds me of by Anry, one of my other favorite artists.
And the rest of your work kinda reminds of Linda Bergkvist's work at Furiae

Seriously though, how about a big city skyline. Water required. I'd love to see your coloring on a that.
