Ps2 Video Error

So, getting my component cables today I thought of no better way to try them then with my new copy of GodHand I just picked up. Well, I plug the into, go into the ps2's video menu, and I guess I changed something important. I get to the y cb/pb cr/pr OR RGB option and change it to RGB, my screen goes black. I wait to see if the screen comes back, as video settings sometimes return to make sure it works. Nope. So reboot the ps2, still black. I try going into the menus blindly to try to fix it, no luck. I have a friend fire up his ps2 and walk me through to the video setting screen, but it turns out that it saves your last known configuration so since I blindly tried to fix it, I don't know if my option is on Audio, video or language. Well Fuck. I crack open the ps2 manual and the only information I find tell me how to switch out of component video mode by holding down start while playing a DVD, it allows me to watch a DVD but the ps2 boot menu is still black but I hear sound. So, now, I can't play games on it, and I haven't even gotten to try out GodHand :( So, any body know how to fix this or how to reset the ps2 to factory settings? I also tried using component, composite and s-video cables after blind re-configures.

You'll have changed something in video settings if you're not getting anything on screen.

    From another website.:

    1) start up your ps2 with the tray open or the lid up (or maybe just with no game in it)

    2) press Down once, then X to enter the system config

    3) press Down three more times, then X again

    4) press Left once, then X again

Keep doing this until you get a picture back!

Do I need to restart each time after I do this or will the picture just pop up?

Sorry, been out on lunch. I'd try a restart between each. You probably don't HAVE to but i'd advise it.

It's been a while since I toyed with my PS2 but doesn't the configuration settings get saved to the memory card? Or is it the system itself? If it's the memory card, you could always try rebooting with the memory card out.

System itself I'm afraid. If you got inside the ps2 there's likely a battery you could take out.

Or you could just switch back to composite cables, which will ignore the setting you changed, long enough to change it back.

I also tried using component, composite and s-video cables after blind re-configures.

Once switched to component, often composite cables won't work.

There's a system configuration file on the memory card. At least some of the settings are saved on the memory card. Try taking it out and restarting the PS2.

And, the RGB/YCbCr options only apply to Component output-- if you plug in the Composite cable, the picture will show up like normal and you can change it back to YCbCr.

Edit: Ack, I didn't see that you tried it. It worked for me though when I did the same thing.

I took my memory card out after it happened to avoid accidentally deleting in a blind rage. So far nothing has worked, what the hell?

Sounds kinda stupid, but have you tried jiggling the A/V cable on the back of the PS2? Sometimes mine gets really loose and only outputs sound. So, I just move it around a little until the picture comes back.

Because I've been switching between composite and component cables trying to get it to work, yes I have been pushing these in fairly securely. And I do get video when I play a dvd, just not for games, which is what I want.

The only option I can see is get your friends ps2 set up near yours and follow the menu screens and TRY (through process or trial and error) to set yours up so it matches his, using his as a guide to where menu items are.

Out of curiosity, would hard-powering off the PS2 (via unplugging the power cord) cause any settings to reset? That could be helpful if at the very least it would start on a predictable menu item so the settings can be changed while blind.

If I was at home right now I'd check myself.

There is quite certainly. And it would be what's keeping the system settings like that saved.
Alot of components are moved between versions and all my old PS2s are at home (I'm at school) so I can't help you. But if your way out of warranty or already removed your sticker at one point it's certainly worth a look.

I tried unplugging the whole system, and its still not getting any video. This is my third ps2 and my second ps2 slim, the last one just stopped reading disk and its about two years old now. So I guess it's out of warranty so I'm assuming there are some guides online on how to remove the battery. I used to open up the phat ps2 all the time to clean the laser and I never had problems with that , so this shouldn't be too hard. Just seems overkill for a simple sounding problem.

Edit: Do I just need to remove for a couple of minutes and reaplce ala bios battery or do I need to replace it?

that doesnt make any sense to me, you should be able to switch cables and the PS2 should know what's plugged in and what they're capable of

ie, you should get an image with composite allowign you to get into the menu and change the type of component output back...

what im saying is, the behaviour you're experiencing doesnt sound normal - especially since the problem is probably somewhat common.

^ Ya, I gathered it is a normal problem but is fucking way up for me. I could have fucked something serious up when I was blindly trying to fix things, but still, no sense what-so-ever. So I 'm going back to the blind setup and try to reverse whatever I did.

    UPDATE MOTHAFUCKS!
WOOO FIXED. Did the configure blindly for a while. Closed down. Hooked up component cables, now I'm back in business. And in French...

Booting without a battery should reset everything, kind of bizarre it hasn't. I hate to suggest it but maybe something has busted, could have been switching it to component which was the catalyst. Have you tried hooking it up to different tvs? I know my lcd tv will display a picture pretty much no matter what setting I put it on.
