I don't usually read yahoo "news" but something caught my eye this morning....
yeah.... Apparently when you're a cop in Thailand and you screw up they brand you as a screwup by making you wear, in the style of fascists, an armband. Only this arm band is supe pinku numba 1 chibi and ever so kawaii!
"BANGKOK, Thailand - Thai police officers who break rules will be forced to wear hot pink armbands featuring "Hello Kitty," the Japanese icon of cute, as a mark of shame, a senior officer said Monday."
Isn't thailand one of those countries where they execute people for jaywalking? And canings for littering? Because wearing Hello Kitty don't seem that bad. Maybe if they forced you to get a Hello Kitty tattoo on your forehead.
Police officers caught littering, parking in a prohibited area, or arriving late — among other misdemeanors — will be forced to stay in the division office and wear the armband all day, said Police Col. Pongpat Chayaphan. The officers won't wear the armband in public.
So, they just chill in the office all day wearing an armband.

they're under partial martial law iirc
but nobody executes people for jaywalking, what the hell are you talking abuot
fun fact: one of the central mechanisms in any dystopia is a culture of shame, because if you feel not good enough (winston compares himself and his fellow party members to the Oceanic ideal in nineteen eighty-four) then you probably won't want to rebel

blurgh, there's more to that but i just woke up
we are agreeing ori

yes
i'm actually reading 1984 right now
because i have to read both this and a handmaid's tale today and then write a paper on them
I've always thought that studying the methods of creation, rather than the creations themselves, generally leads to a terribly derivative output.
you want to learn to write books? then read books. don't read about writing books because that's adding a layer of abstraction from the subject that is not going to do you any good at all.
and I'm sure somebody's going to say "durr, durr, but if you're studying books that already exist how is that going to lead you to create anything new, surely it'll just make you more derivative, durr durr"
i love how it's basically forcing me to read more widely, because although i try to read widely on my own i'm restricted by my own personal comfort zone
You know those towels you see in places that are far too neat, that are useless and "decorative" and are not to be touched, defeating the whole purpose of towels? Yeah.
Posts
Which I guess is the point.
I think this is just for the most heiunous of crimes like corruption, taking bribes and whatnot.
great
...
Yeah, I'm sure this will learn them.
article says it's for petty misdemeanours
is it too hard to read the second paragraph or something
So, they just chill in the office all day wearing an armband.
That's really not a big deal.

Besides, jaywalking, drug trafficking, whats the big difference?
wearing this shit would presumably cause these dudes a titanic loss of face, and therefore of social status and authority
not so dumb now, is it
nothing quite like a shame culture to motivate you to do good
oh don't get me wrong, I think the situation as a whole is dumb
but the situation includes the culture in which the punishment applies, not merely the punishment itself
taken in isolation the punishment looks pretty dumb but within its cultural context it kinda makes sense. the problem is that the culture is dumb.
Get jailed, get a hello kitty avatar.
which would serve to encourage katchem_ash
think these things through

yay
haha are you studying literature
dick
by which I mean I am studying literature next year and should really get around to reading some philip k dick
the lit classes are ten million times more useful than the creative writing classes

and to that I say die in a fire
(again ori I am agreeing with you)
i love how it's basically forcing me to read more widely, because although i try to read widely on my own i'm restricted by my own personal comfort zone
it stopped me just playing heavy metal all the time and oh god it's done me a lot of good
although I confess I haven't been able to push myself to actually apply all of this stuff yet
my last girlfriend was strange
See, a live in girlfriend is it's own special kind of shame.
you need to regulate that shit immediately before you're not allowed to touch the towels in your own bathroom
Next thing you know, she'll be wanting to wear shoes. And please don't tell me you let her leave the kitchen, because if you did, you're fucked.
I sense a bit of sarcasm there...but really...you have to reel in a woman when she gets in decorate mode.
The only girls I've ever lived with have been my sister and mom, that was 8 years ago and I don't remember there being any rules about towels.
Educate me on this.
