I have seen a few users questioning whether or not to upgrade to the elite in order to get the HDMI port.

It looks like that HDMI out is now turning up on premiums that are already on the shelves.

Microsoft really needs to lock some of this shit down. As if the average consumer wasn't confused enough by the 4 SKUs, now they all come with new variations.

I'm more interested if it has the 65 nm chip. That will be when I break down and get one (and when I get some monies :| )

Welp, so much for the Elite.

Really, it was the combo of 1) HDMI and 2) Technogeeks willing to spend the extra cash to replace their dead premiums that pushed sales up so much. With those two advantages gone and the fairly stingy price drop, few people will pony up the extra money.

I have the feeling that in a few days/hours, we'll know there are 65mn chips in the wild. Inside that new HDMI 360 there.

    COME CLEAN, MICROSOFT.

    You'd sell more of them.

I got a 360 off the shelf in July that was manufactured a year ago, so you'd probably need to find a store with a really high sales volume to secure one of these new ones anytime soon.

So I get a job, then microsoft drops the price, and now making premiums with HDMI (the only reason i was going to get a Elite)?

I better not cross any streets anytime soon, life is never this kind to me.

IMPORTANT: can you tell prior to purchase the manufacturing date of 360's? (assuming that truly is the only way to tell if it has the HDMI)

There is a small flap on the back of the 360 packaging that you can open to see the serial no. and date of manufacture.

Microsoft has confirmed the addition of HDMI ports to all newly manufactured Xbox 360 premium consoles. "Yes, we are offering an HDMI port for Xbox 360 simply as another choice in Xbox 360 owners’ games and entertainment experience," a Microsoft rep told Shacknews in an e-mailed statement. "Retailers are gradually introducing HDMI-enabled Xbox 360s into the channel to meet demand."

Regarding the possibility of an HDMI output on the $279.99 SKU, the Microsoft rep said, "We have not announced any plans to add HDMI to the Xbox 360 Core System." Microsoft would not reveal whether any other additions had been made to newly available Xbox 360 models, such as the inclusion of a 65nm process. "We are constantly updating the console’s more than 1700 internal components and therefore will not comment on details of specific components or manufacturing processes," he said.

Back when the Elite was still firmly a RUMOR the talk was that it was going to be a limited edition thing, with the premium eventually being more inclusive.

My personal theory is that the Elite and Core are both phased out leaving a single unit at 350, then having wired controllers and 120 gig drives available as accessories for those who choose that path.

I was thinking of the same thing. Thing is...I got my 360 in April '06 and just recently the DVD drive has been acting a little bit wonky. Only on certain games, though. Like...sometimes when I try to play Forza 2 I get the white "please place disc in Xbox 360 console" screen. Usually I just cycle the power and it works fine the 2nd or 3rd time. Alas...I think the DVD drive is standing gallantly on it's last leg.

I bought the Best Buy product replacement plan at purchase and I think I'm going to return it since I can get an HDMI Premium. Although, I might wait until confimation comes out that the new HDMI-capable one IS the one with the 65nm die.

the nature of early adopters is that they will be annoyed.

Pink. The console makers wil try to appeal to the female market.

I thought that was a rumor, and when Microsoft finally announced the thing they said it wasn't going anywhere and there were no plans to do the "have hte elite around for awhile, then phase out hte elite and add it's features to the premium" idea that cropped up in the rumors. Even that link posted above was from "awesome inside sources(tm)" and not MS themselves.

I was an early adopter. Got my 360 on launch day in the UK.

I'm perfectly ok with these improvements to the console. Doesn't bother me. As long as it plays the games I couldnt care less about the ports on the back, I only need the VGA cable for my PC monitor anyways.

Amazing how people will find complaint in Microsoft ADDING in things to the console. And there are NOT 4 skus, there are 2.

The Halo edition is just that, a special edition. It is a premium console, nothing more nothing less. And the core doesn't exist. So I guess with the Elite being phased out we are back to one, decent sku. Hooray.
