This is a copy of an email that should have gone out to all BYOC signups. If you didn't get it, well, ultimately it doesn't matter because you can see it here.
This post will be edited to reflect any changes made between now and PAX. If anything significant gets changed, I'll bump this noting the change.
--- Basic LAN Party Information ---
If you've never been to a lan party, be sure to bring the following equipment:
BYOC badge and standard 3 day PAX pass
Computer
Monitor (Please no bigger than 24" LCD or 21" CRT)
Keyboard
Mouse (Only wired mice and keyboards are recommended for lan parties)
Mouse pad
Ethernet cable (10 feet should be sufficient, but it's better to have longer than shorter).
Power cables
Power strip
Headphones
Games CDs/DVDs, Windows CD, and backups for other programs you may need to install/reinstall.
You should have that list in a physical mailer, and if you don't, you might want to print it out and check things off as they get packed.
While we will have Internet access, it is strongly recommended that you update Steam before packing up your computer and download/install any and all other patches you may need. Every minute you spend waiting for a download is one minute that could be spent turning your good friends and peers into Kibble. If you do forget something, be sure to check out our ftp server, it may save you some time.
It is also mandatory that you run virus protection on your computer before connecting it to our network. Any computers that are found with a virus will be immediately disconnected from the network until the matter is resolved.
--- Basic PAX BYOC Information ---
The PAX BYOC schedule is as follows:
Friday: 2:00pm - 3:00am
Saturday: 10:00am - 3:00am
Sunday: 10:00am - 6:00pm
Changed: Bring your equipment to the inside of the center's main entrance on the intersection of 7th and Pike. You should have already received your 3 day PAX Pass – if you haven't, don’t stress!, we’ll take care of you at the will-call window on the first floor of the Washington State Convention and Trade Center. The window will be open all morning to help you out. There will be a large sign for BYOC Equipment, take the equipment there and if there's nobody to help you up, they'll be there soon.
We are hoping to let people in the PC room a little early so you can get your computer set up and check out the other areas of PAX as soon as the clock strikes 2:00pm. Remember, while you may be able to get into the PC room as early as 1:00pm, the rest of PAX will remain closed until 2:00 so you will asked to either stay inside the PC room or go back to the main entrance.
Entry into PAX BYOC is in the north lobby on the fourth floor just south of the Exhibition Hall.
You can see a map
here.
Added: IF YOU ARE SELLING A BYOC BADGE:
You need to shoot an email to pax_byoc@bellinghamlan.com with the name, address, phone # of the person WHO IS BUYING THE BADGE FROM YOU, you also need to include your own name/address/phone # (one you can be easily reached at if there are any issues). If not they will not be able to claim the badge from me at PAX.
IF YOU ARE BUYING A BYOC BADGE FROM SOMEONE ELSE:
You need to give the person you are buying the badge from your Full name, address, and phone # so they can then email it to pax_byoc@bellinghamlan.com Indicating the badge was sold. You should also get a phone # of the person you are buying the badge from to call if there are any issues day of PAX.
If you are unable to do so before 8/21/07, at least get the seller's phone number so we may verify at the door.
--- Security Information ---
It's very important to us that you feel secure in leaving your computer alone to see panels, concerts, and participate in any of the other gaming opportunities available at PAX. As such, we do put more emphasis on security than most lan parties. Before you enter the PAX BYOC area, you will have to quickly register any computer and monitors that come into or out of the computer area. We've gone to great lengths to keep the check in and check out process as streamlined as possible, but do be patient. You can help us out by making sure your BYOC badge is easily visible, as nobody without that badge will be allowed inside the BYOC room.
When PAX closes Friday and Saturday at 3:00am, just leave your computer there and we'll lock up the entire room until staff arrives the next morning.
While we will make every attempt to keep all equipment in the room safe, do be aware that there is little we can do to prevent ipods, portable game consoles, cd's, big wads of cash, and other small items from walking off. We strongly suggest you keep such items out of plain view and use some common sense when it comes to your own security.
If you're coming with a laptop, we recommend you invest in a laptop lock particularly if you plan on leaving your laptop unaccompanied while you rock out to the NESkimos. If you can't for some reason, we will have some loaners at the BYOC station, but it's better to rely on yourself than us.
--- Tournament Information ---
All PC Tournament information can be found
here.
--- BYOC Activities ---
A new feature to PAX BYOC this year is our BYOC Activities. These are, as you might expect from the name, contests, events, and tournaments exclusive to BYOC participants. These are going to be very casual contests, typically taking no more than an hour from start to finish...perfect for some quick fun.
Details will available at PAX, but here's a quick rundown...
Friday ---
3:00pm. Desktop Tower Defense: Be quick to set up your computer and don't be late, as you'll be playing the popular web based game to battle off hordes and hordes of evil monstrous circles of death.
5:00pm. SOLDAT: You know it, you love it, you want to marry it. Well, you can't marry it, but you CAN use it to kill bitches. Every man for himself, most kills wins.
7:00pm. UT2k4: An official PAX tournament in previous events, this time it's but a crazy insane contest. We're going to pack servers full of people and cram everyone in a custom tiny map...oh yes, the blood will flow.
BONUS EVENT: 7:00pm. PC vs. Console, Shadowrun: By popular interest, we have added another event where the honorable pc armada can crush the insect like console populace. I've said it before, I'll say it again, out of all the awesome goodness of PAX BYOC, this is what I'm most looking forward to.
9:00pm. Trackmania Nations: If you haven't played this turbo-powered racer, you haven't lived. Forget trying to finish the race in record time, if you can finish the track you're doing well.
11:00pm. Baboviolent: This game is more or less Marble Mania meets Quake. I'm not entirely sure how to describe this game other than to say that...you're a marble...with weapons...and an insatiable desire to kill other marbles. Make sense? Well, I tried.
1:00am. Doom: Keep in mind the required specs for this game are a
80386 class processor and 4 megabytes of RAM. If you aren't quite there yet, there's still some time to upgrade. We'll be using Doom95, in 4 player ffa matches.
Saturday ---
11:00am. DOTA Tournament: Methos645 from the PA Forums has stepped up to the plate to host a tournament based around this very popular Warcraft 3 game. Additional details can be found
here.
12:00pm. Typing of the Dead: The world is being invaded by zombies, and while your first impulse might be to grab a shotgun, the only way you will be able to survive is to...oh yes...type them to death. Best score wins it.
2:00pm. Supreme Commander: The spiritual successor to Total Annihilation, this recent game finds huge robots in huge armies fighting on huge battlegrounds. We're aiming for teams of 3 on this, so get your friends!
5:00pm. Flatout 2: Ah yes, finally a game where road rage is not just allowed, but...well...that pretty much IS the game. We'll be playing in derby, so the entire point is to crush the living crap out of any car that isn't your own. Most points wins.
7:00pm. PC vs. Console, Shadowrun: Long has the debate raged over how a battle of pc players vs. console players would turn out. Well, my noble pc player comrades, we shall now SHOW them what happens when they eff with us. We're networking our pc room with a console freeplay room to wage a Shadowrun battle against 360 players, and we need your help to represent our legion.
8:30pm. Company of Heroes: This real time strategy game won more awards than you can shake a stick at, plus it has killing nazis. Which, you know, is itself totally awesome - unless you *are* a nazi, which might not make it so awesome.
11:30pm. Grid Wars: This game has more colored chaos than any reasonable person could ever handle, making it perfect for the PAX BYOC audience. It should not be played by you if you are pregnant, have a heart condition, or are less than *this* tall. Best score takes the win.
1:00am. Plasma Pong: It should really be against the law to follow up Grid Wars with the equally psychotic Plasma Pong, which is exactly why we're doing it. I'm pretty sure trying to play Grid Wars and Plasma Pong back to back is the kind of thing that can turn a perfectly normal individual into a Batman villain.
Sunday ---
12:00pm. Garry's Mod: We'll be using Garry's Mod 10 for this, and we're building a map specifically for this contest. It's, as of writing, still a work in progress but it'll be a race where you have to build and race in your own car. I will warn you, the track was designed by someone who played Grid Wars and Plasma Pong back to back. Nuff said.
2:00pm. PC vs. Console, Shadowrun: Didn't get in for our first round of cross platform warfare? Here's your second chance to destroy the feeble console kiddies with our superior skill, efficient input devices, and magnetic sexual appeal!
3:00pm. DEFCON: World War 3 is a game, and you get to play it. Sure, you might get 100 kills in a game of Quake...in this game, your frags will be measured in the millions. Sadly, so will your deaths. The games will be 6 player free for all with 5x speed minimum.
5:00pm. Kitty Cannon: The touching tale of a sweet and innocent, cute and fuzzy kitten getting launched from a cannon landing on trampolines and cacti. Launch your kitten further than anyone else, and you shall reign supreme.
--- BYOC Online Quiz ---
Another new feature to PAX BYOC this year will be the online quiz. Inside you'll find a variety of questions probing your knowledge and/or resourcefulness. Part IQ test and part scavenger hunt, expect to have the entire venue leveraged against you.
The first person to complete the trials, if any, will receive a special prize that looks exactly like a PAX BYOC 2008 badge, smells exactly like a PAX BYOC 2008 badge, and tastes exactly like a PAX BYOC 2008 badge...but I'm not telling what it is, and those are your only clues.
The starting point in this quiz will be
http://pax/quiz/index.htm.
--- Case Mod Contest ---
Returning this year will be a case mod contest where the best case modifications are judged and rewarded. There will be a place to sign up near BYOC Security, and you will do so by entering your seat number. Over the course of the event, our staff will track down participants and judge the Awesomeness of your case mod accordingly. Awards will be handed out Sunday at Noon.
--- Intranet Information ---
We will be have a local Intranet page setup. From this page you can communicate with others on a basic shoutbox, check on additional tournament information and updates, view a list of the servers we have up and running (often that will have information as to what maps and how many players are in each server), and a link to the ftp server we will have on hand where you can find piles of demos, patches, and more. The address for this page should be
http://pax
--- Voice Chat Information ---
We will have several Ventrilo servers available for tournaments and public gaming. While we will have the client available on ftp, it is recommended that you download and install Ventrilo before you come to the event. You can download the client at
www.ventrilo.com. Server address information will be available at PAX on the intranet site.
Additionally we will have projectors displaying concert events, panels, and other events at PAX. The audio for this will be piped through a Ventrilo server, and again, address information will be on the Intranet page.
--- Staff Information ---
Partnering up with PAX again this year is Mike "Shocker" Baum and his crew of pirates from Infernalan (
www.infernalan.com ). They host biannual lan parties in Dupont, Washington (just south of Tacoma).
Our Tournament Admins are a dedicated team of highly trained ninjas that can kill you with the bat of an eyelash, and they've been culled from all corners of the world including Infernalan, LAN Party NorthWest (
www.lanpartynw.com ), and beyond.
Manning our security desk is Internet Celebrity BigRed along with his specialist team of undead robots. He won't tell you how someone might become an undead robot, but he will show you...and you do not want that.
I am David "DiscoDave" Coffman from Bellingham LAN Experiment (
www.bellinghamlan.com ), and I'm totally radical.
See you soon!

1. Transporting my computer might be an issue for me, as I don't want to pay out the butt for parking downtown and I live only over in Capitol Hill would it be feasible to assume that I could take a cab down there an unload my PC with little or no problems at 1? I have a full tower but a much smaller flat screen monitor. Obviously with all the stuff I have to bring it's not something I can scoot around in a line with, I'm not like a pussy or something and can obviously carry my computer I'm more of wondering if you would think something like this feasible? If not what would be the best way for someone to bring their computer in without any troubles? Like...is there going to be a loading dock type thing where cars can unload and then park? Thanks!
2. As far as software is concerned I see some games on there like UT which since my millions of formats and moves since the game came out I have no idea where the disk is and it's far from my hard drive. Should I go....find a copy or will copies be provided (which I'm sure goes into that whole stealing thing, but we would just be using it for LAN purpose, I dunno) in one form or another? Obviously it would be ideal if the software was installed before I came but if it's not possible do we just not participate in that game or would there still be a chance? If we need to install it ourselves is there a list somewhere that could tell me around what I should be finding? Thanks!
Thanks again, I'm HELLA excited for this.
1:
You could take a cab, theres a passenger load/unload area at convention PL that you can be dropped off at to unload. As long as you can carry all your stuff in one trip that would make it even easier.
I might have enforcers with carts stationed down at that load/unload area for situations like this, but I dont know yet.
We should have carts available but they will usually be stored up where people are lining up, I will post here when I can get some of this worked out.
2 software:
PA does not condone piracy on its Lan network at pax. If you dont have the software beforehand im sure you can find someway to get it, or at the event someone might have a copy you can borrow.
This is a change from the original policy where BYOC badges would be mailed out.
That map is kick ass. How come I have not seen that anywhere on these forums yet? May I suggest that the link to it be included in the first post of the PAX Map thread?
I have just chopped it into 4 pics (1 for each floor) so that I can view it on my personal media player while I am at PAX. Shibby!

2. Will it be towers on the floor, or towers on the table?
3. (this may require speculation) Arriving late, will there be anywhere I can park closeby? One trip won't cut it for me.
Yes you can show up late on friday
2)
In the past its been users choice, not sure if the wsctc has some firecode on it or something. I will find out.
3) wsctc has a parking garage which will dump you into the 3rd floor when you get out of your car and into the convention center.
1) We're getting in early to set up right?
2) Will we be allowed to enter the convention center from the BYOC room at 2?
Please say yes and yes ;-)
I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I don't want to lose precious PAX time making sure I'm networked properly.
Remember the line last year? If we aren't allowed in to the BYOC until 1 then kicked out at 1:50, that means by default we're being forced to be one of the last ones in. Not exactly a perk to pay extra for.
1) Yes, about an hour early. So around 1 or so I will start flagging people in to the checkin stations.
2) Yes, you guys can hangout in the BYOC room until PAX opens, but only the BYOC room. If I see people take steps outside the room toward a still closed area YOU WILL FEEL THE WRATH OF MY LASERS! PEWPEWPEW
Last year the escorts should have plopped you back into your space in line, if they didn't I apologize. Thats what everyone was instructed to do but im sure it got lost in the craziness.
There wont be said tournament. There MAY OR MAY NOT be a quake3 dancemant contest at the BYOC desk during off peak times.
1: So I have my 3-day pass, will you be mailing out my BYOC pass or will I pick it up the day of the event? (Also I’m still missing a pass for Saturday)
2. Has there been any information on the WoW Tournament?
3. When I get there with my tower and all my crap strapped to my back and a cart, EXACTLY what entrance, on what level, and what line will I get in and at what time?
I'm local so I can be there at 6am if I have too. I can also help out if assistance is needed.
Thanks for the help, I’m so jazzed. Can’t wait to meet you all.

If we get in early to set up our computers and stay inside until PAX opens, do we totally miss out on our chance for concert wristbands? If so, how early can we get into BYOC? Big Red says 1pm, but that's way too late to get back in line and actually get a concert wristband.
Yes... although BYOC people will have a leg up on everyone else since the BYOC room is right across from the expo hall ;-)

I can get the totals for all other states(and the crazy canadains) if anyone is interested.
I was thinking of doing one of those zipcode maps for byoc that put a dot where each person is from, but saw that WA would jsut be a solid clumps of dots so I didnt bother but I will if anybody would want to see it.
Edit:
quick scan of the list shows the farthest people traveling for BYOC are New York and Florida.
Having lived all over the country it will be cool to hook up with so many gamers from around the states. And what can you say about Canadians, their just like us, but not!
ATRAY "local now, but last pax i drove from iowa to seattle just for PAX. Then decided to stay."
Be honest, was it worth the drive? That seems like a hell of a long drive for a convention of this size.

Since I am distributing BYOC badges day of PAX anyone who is buying a pass off of someone else *NEEDS* to follow these directions.
I will have a master spreadsheet of all the names/addresses of everyone who has purchased a BYOC badge this year.
IF YOU ARE SELLING A BYOC BADGE:
You need to shoot an email to
pax_byoc@bellinghamlan.com
With the name, address, phone # of the person WHO IS BUYING THE BADGE FROM YOU, you also need to include your own name/address/phone # (one you can be easily reached at if there are any issues). If not they will not be able to claim the badge from me at PAX.
IF YOU ARE BUYING A BYOC BADGE FROM SOMEONE ELSE:
You need to give the person you are buying the badge from your Full name, address, and phone # so they can then email it to
pax_byoc@bellinghamlan.com
Indicating the badge was sold. You should also get a phone # of the person you are buying the badge from to call if there are any issues day of PAX.
Cutoff date for before PAX transfers of BYOC badges is on or before 8/21/07
(Mostly because we start packing up for PAX then and wont have much time to edit spreadsheets and check email until PAX is in full swing)
If you cant do this before PAX or you have bought a badge off of someone after the cutoff date, you have a few options, one of which is at my own expense because I am such a nice guy :P
IF YOU ARE ATTENDING PAX BUT DECIDED TO SELL YOUR BYOC BADGE:
You can pick up your badge from me and give it to the person that you sold it to.
I say again if you are selling/sold your badge but are *still* attending PAX you can either pick up the badge from me and give it to the other person, or follow the above instructions to do it in advance.
IF YOU BOUGHT A BADGE AFTER THE CUTOFF DATE AND THE PERSON ISN'T ATTENDING PAX:
You *need* to get the phone # of the person who originally owned the badge, a number that he/she can be reached at anytime Friday/early Sat during PAX. You will have to call said person (or if you don't have a cellphone mine can be used) and I will have to talk to them to get their infos to do the badge transfer.
Notes/IM's/emails/bribes wont be accepted.
Please ask here or PM me for any other questions/concerns.
So its now 2 weeks from PAX and around this time 2 weeks from now you will be standing in line, computers in tow, Looking through a glass wall longingly at a sky suspended bridge that connects the awesomesauce PC room to the Expo hall.
Sorry, Expo hall doors will be closed, no peeking :P
This is going to be a longass post where I will lay down details (obviously subject to change) where you guys will line up and what you can expect this year for BYOC checkin and security.
BYOC Friday Pre-PAX Lineup:
Using the handy dandy PAX map HERE. I have utilized the manliest of colors and my l33t MSPaint skillz to Point out the 3 main points of interest.
-BYOC checkin desk
-The start of the BYOC line, where you guys will Line up with equipment
-and the Glass wall which is in a prime spot for me to taunt you guys from behind it.
(also has doors so thats the point of entry when i start letting people in)
BYOC Badge retrieval:
BYOC badges are being picked up from me day of PAX (if you read my previous massive post on that about transfers).
Depending how many people are in line, I may setup a temporary station for badge pickup. If theres not that many (meaning under 100) I will just walk the line with my laptop and compare names to the master spreadsheet and give you your badge.
I should start that around 10am on friday, but dont hold me to that :P it depends how much work there is left to do and such.
If you wont be there on friday, Just report to the BYOC checkin desk to get your badge and checkin your equipment.
YOU WILL NEED YOUR PHOTO ID ON HAND TO RETRIEVE YOUR BYOC BADGE!
Your photo ID should have your current, valid address on it (the one you used for registration), but as long as its an ID in the same state/name that the badge was registered under, thats fine.
(I understand that people move, My drivers license still has my old addy on it. Too lazy to get a new one :P)
No ID = No Badge
BYOC Checkin details:
Depending on how much work is done, if the BYOC room is 100% setup (or close enough), and if I have all my stations/staff ready. Is when I will start checking you guys in. It could be as early as 11:30am or as late as 1pm.
IT WILL NOT BE AFTER 1PM. I will make sure of that. People need ample time to setup their computers beforehand.
If you attended PAX Last year, its more or less the same thing (few changes, mainly seating chart). For those who haven't...
You come to the BYOC security desk with your gear. Give us your badge #. We will ask you some questions for information about you (just name and handle) and your equipment. We will give you a tag with your Badge # on it to put on your monitor and PC (so nobody else can take that out of the room but you). You will then pick a seat to go sit down at.
PLEASE sit in the seat you pick, if you must change your seat you *NEED* to let the BYOC desk know so it can be reflected on the seating chart.
The seating chart is law. If you move seats without letting us know, and someone else who checks in later picks that seat. You will have to move back to your old seat.
A pain in the ass, i know. Epically if your computer is all hooked up. But that will be your punishment for not letting us know you changed seats ;-)
Simple BYOC rules to follow (in regards to security/setup/safety):
1) Seating chart is always right.
2) Stay within your 32" of space on your table. if you are in someone else's space, and its a problem with the person, You will be asked to move your things back into your space.
3) Stash all bags under the table, not in the isles.
4) Don't mess with other peoples things
5) Keep all small, valuable items out of sight. Don't leave wallets/watches/cd cases/phat lewtz laying around.
6) Use common sense when it comes to security (See rule #5)
7) No guests are allowed in BYOC.
8) I think this was mentioned before but Keep all desktop backgrounds and content you watch PG-13 rated during PAX. (me and the security patrols will be on the lookout for this)
Thats the last huge post by me, I swear.
If anyone has any questions about any of this, feel free to ask here or PM me on the forums.
If any WSCTC staff or enforcer stops you when you are on your way up to the 4th floor, say you are going to the BYOC line. Nobody should question you if you are hauling up computer equipment, but if there are any issues, tell them to radio BigRed in the PC room.
Points of Entry for BYOC attendees who are hauling up equipment:
1)
If you enter from the pike street entrance of the WSCTC (across from cheesecake factory) there will be an elevator there that will take you right up to the 4th floor. You will most likely want to use this entrance if you are stashing your equipment in a hotel room.
2)
If you are parking in the main WSCTC parking garage, the entry to the convention center is on the 3rd floor. After entering you will have to walk straight ahead, past the escalators, and there will be an elevator on your right. Unless you really want to take the escalators to the 4th floor (depends how much stuff you are carrying).
That elevator will take you up to the south (union street) side of the WSCTC 4th floor. Walk straight ahead past subway/starbucks and take a left. That hallway will lead you to the BYOC Line.
3)
If you are parking in the WSCTC Freeway park parking garage, you will enter the convention center on the 2nd floor. After entering if you walk straight ahead you will see the confiscators on your right and the elevator straight ahead past the escalators.
That elevator will take you up to the south (union street) side of the WSCTC 4th floor. Walk straight ahead past subway/starbucks and take a left. That hallway will lead you to the BYOC Line.
4)
If you are getting dropped off (and therefore you suck because you don't have to pay for parking like me ) at the Passenger load/unload on Convention PL you have many options. You can either take the escalators to your left, or walk to the right, past the shops, and turn left, to the Pike street entrance side and take the escalators/elevator there up to the 4th floor. That 2nd set (by pike street) will dump you off right where the BYOC Line is at.
(I have worked way too many shows in that building, I can draw the layout of the whole place by memory, lol)
YOU WILL NEED YOUR PHOTO ID ON HAND TO RETRIEVE YOUR BYOC BADGE!

Okay, BigRed might wanna send out another mass e-mail then as the email he sent out says otherwise.
edit: Oops, not BigRed then. Sorry.
Dave sent out that email, and I will ping him to see if we are allowed to send out a second one informing everyone of the changes.
(even though you said the figures weren't 100% just thought I'd tell you)
Also, you don't by chance have a breakdown of total number of state side attendees do you?
