So anyone going to PAX feel up for drafting some Time Spiral block any time over the course of the weekend? I'll be good to go for as many drafts as we can get people for with TPF (I have about a box of block packs collecting dust that I really want to crack open, but I can't bring myself to pop them unless I'm drafting :| ).

To anyone who has been to PAX in previous years, how has the Magic situation turned out before? What do people like to play most: draft, constructed, sealed deck, multiplayer, goofy formats, all of the above, etc?

Okay, I'll delete my thread. :P I'd be up for this. Never been to PAX though, so don't know about the space for it.

We'd probably have to organize it somewhat, thats why I'm trying to round up people now. I wonder if WotC will have packs on hand to sell at their booth? I'm sure we can find some space somewhere, what with all the other tabletop games that will be going on.

If there's not enough people interested to draft, I'd still be willing to do a 10th or Time Spiral Block sealed deck.

I was already planning to bring my cards. If there are people who wish to play then count me in. I have some old decks that need to come out of retirement anyways.

I'd be up for draft or whatever as long as I don't get yelled at for having to read the cards. I dont own much of anything past Visions.

I'm fine with whatever, but I prefer limited over constructed. I don't think there will have a problem finding players, although a bit of looking around for some may be required.

I imagine a good number of people would have to read the cards, since most probably play casual constructed only. But as long as we can get enough players, I'm happy 8-)

last year there was free core set. Maybe if everyone pooled cards you could have a good size draft. Of course then there's the lands problem...

Anyway, I'd do the TS draft if it didn't conflict with anything. Details.

Well I have enough packs for 11 people to draft Time Spiral block (although assuming I win the next Friday Night Magic draft next week, then you can up that count to 19 people :P), if people would be willing to throw down $10 to me for 3 packs. I also have about a single-row cardbox full of lands that I'll probably end up bringing, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem either.

As for when we have the drafts, I'm open for whenever is best for the majority. I'll probably be spending at least some time during the daytime Friday and Saturday in line for the Halo 3 demos they are sure to have there, but other than that I'm good to go whenever; day, night, convention hall, hotel room, diner, whatever and wherever :)

Quoted from wikipedia.org (source, under the Limited section):

"In sealed deck tournaments, each player receives a 75-card Tournament Pack (containing 45 cards and 30 basic lands) and two booster packs (each with 15 cards) from which to build their deck, though exceptions exist.

In a booster draft, several players (usually eight) are seated around a table and each player is given three booster packs. Each player opens a pack, selects a card from it and passes the remaining cards to his or her left. Each player then selects one of the 14 remaining cards from the pack that was just passed to him or her, and passes the remaining cards to the left again. This continues until all of the cards are depleted. The process is repeated with the second and third packs, except that the cards are passed to the right in the second pack (and then back to the left with the third pack). Players then build decks out of any of the cards that they selected during the drafting and add as many basic lands as they want."

Constructed means you build your deck from the cards you own and just play it; thats the way you have been playing with your precon decks. Draft and sealed, on the other hand, require that you only play the cards you opened/drafted.

Block - Each major expansion set of magic is released in what is called a "block"; a block represents 3 expansion sets that are released one after the other, and have similar themes/mechanics/etc to the cards. So Time Spiral block would consist of the Time Spiral, Planar Chaos, and Future Sight expansion sets. Drafting Time Spiral block means our three packs are one each of Time Spiral, Planar Chaos, and Future Sight.

Yea, I have a lot of those :X I've been playing the game for 13 years to the week almost, so I've amassed a decent collection, although not a pro player's collection by any means. I wouldn't mind playing multiplayer either, as long as I get to draft too. I have a few fun decks I can play, like my zombie knight deck with Damnations, Haakons, and Buried Alives. I miss that deck. I haven't played casual multiplayer in a loooong time.

Yea, I started when 3rd edi. came out when I was in like 5th grade. After a couple years, I basiclly quit and saved the cards. Started up again like 3-4 years ago when I started college. My white Samurai deck has a 3rd Wrath of God and Balance in it heh. So I guess I have a few mutiplayer cards. Also got a black zombie deck with some moves that hit all including me. If need be, I can make everyone tie after killing everyone including myself which I have done many times when I know I am going to lose. Though, none of my decks are close to pro decks. Only a few combos. Oh, I do have a anti-red and anti-black cards from 3rd. One that turns all mountains into plains and one that damages people that control swamps. Yea, it would be nice to get a casual mutiplayer together.

For any who are interested in the details for the drafts, I will post them during this coming weekend after I have secured exactly how many booster packs I will have available for everyone to use. To reiterate, the drafts will be Time Spiral block (1 pack each of Time Spiral, Planar Chaos, Future Sight, if you need packs they will be $10 for all 3, which is a decent price considering WotC's MSRP is $4 a pack), and in case you aren't familiar with booster draft, yes you do get to keep the cards you draft from the packs.

And I am totally up for some casual multiplayer, as well :D

Well we can take a vote before we start drafting I suppose. It's not a huge deal to me as long as the sets are good (*coughnotkamigawacough*), and its just for fun anyways. The majority of the packs being drafted will be TS block though, as that is all the packs I have, so if someone wanted to bring a trio of Rav block packs into the draft, they wouldn't hugely pollute the pool I don't think.

What does everyone else think on this?

Well to be fair, Time Spiral block has a LOT of mechanics (especially Future Sight, which has something like 11, I think?). But I get what you're saying, and I do enjoy the balance that comes with drafting just one block. But I will also most likely have enough packs for 2 separate drafts, so we could always do both :)

Because Kamigawa is a very weak block when compared to Ravnica or Time Spiral. The enjoyment level of drafting is determined mostly by the quality of the common-level cards in the block (since those are the cards people will be getting the most of in their decks, seeing as how each pack has something like 11 commons, 3 uncommons, and 1 rare, although Time Spiral block futzes with those numbers somewhat), and Time Spiral and Ravnica are both very good sets when it comes to the quality of their commons in each one; Kamigawa, not so much.

There has been plently of magic at all three previous PAXs. Most of what I've seen has been casual constructed multiplayer (free-for-all, two-headed, emporer), though I did see the power nine broken out once. The second year there was a standard tournament, but it seems that won't be happening again. I certainly plan to bring several decks, and would be up for a draft or two as well.
