Anyone have some REALLY old EGM, EGM2, Gamefan, Next Generation, GamePro magazines?

Talk about old mags! In the mean time, I brought these up because...

Back in the mid Nineties, my friend would occasionally buy these mags and I would read them (I subscribed to Nintendo power myself ;)). One of those had an article about the "upcoming" GameShark for Playstation. This was before a GameShark/Action Replay existed here on any platform and all the US was aware of was the Game Genie (completely different than the long-running European Action Replays). From then on, nearly every issue of these magazines had GameShark ads in the back two pages featuring a pointy-nosed chrome shark head (not the swooshy abstract shark logo they later used).

Now, I remember the article explaining how it was being made and tested, and I believe that it had details about some involvement with Sony. Even though I'd love to find this article, even just one of the ads would be fine: I'm looking for the Sony "PS" Playstation logo.

When it lauched, I took particular notice that it had a real "PS" logo on it when I saw it at Wal-Mart. My twin brother did too and we both still remember this. Back then, my fanboi self believed that they embraced GameShark much like Sega did with the Game Genie to take advantage of Nintendo's refusal to do so (if not simply to differentiate themselves). Anyway, now I see several sources and even Wikipedia stating that it was never licensed by any console maker even though this is not true: The very first PSX version was, and I doubt I'm going to find a box showing it.

I have EGM/EGM2 mags dating back to '96.

When I visit my parents in a couple of days I'll take a look.

If you don't get anything by then, PM me if I haven't responded :)

Man, my mom would go through periodically and throw all those old mags out. I would get so pissed and ask her kindly (ahem) not to throw out my things and stuff. Now she doesn't throw out anything that goes to the house (I haven't lived there since I was 18, 23 now), which means I have a shitload of magazines lying around from 2002-present.

For some reason my subscriptions keep getting renewed. I think she does it. Oh well, I realize I can't help you, but to be fair I did have a gen 1 gameshark and I cheated the fuck out of some games.

Heh, unfortunately my random collection of EGMs, GamePros, and Nintendo Powers ends around 1993 or 1994. They're not in any order and just stacked up in my closet. Most of them are in poor condition, but I imagine that one day I'll have fun looking at them one more time before I throw them out.

I have so many gaming magazines from back in the day.

Sometime, for toilet reading, I grab a random magazine and flip through it. Brings back a lot of memories, really, but it's mostly 'holy shit, I thought that game was good back then? That game sucks!'.

The best game mag from the day was GameFan, it had a very colorful layout and the online site had a *chatroom!* that the editors used to be in all the time.

Nowadays, I just throw away my issue of Xbox Magazine as soon as I get it in the mail. All I wanted is the MVP card....

The best part about this thread is that the Playstation release is apparently "REALLY" old.

I'm ancient. I still have a ton of old magazines I need to get rid of. I think I actually have a copy of Computer & Video Games that has a hologram of Sonic on the cover for their story about the impending release of Sonic 1.

Man I have stacks upon stacks of those old mags in the garage, but I am hesitant to crack them open, even for the sacred Shen Long code. It's like opening Pandora's box and shit...I might find myself back in the 'cades with all of the old Gamepro SF 2 combo lists next to the monitor.

God, just thinking about the old magazines I have...

The first issue of Offical Dreamcast Magazine..

Old issues of Gamers Republic, and PC Accelerator...

The only issue of GameGo released...

Nintendo Power with Final Fantasy II on the cover... or even older, the "controversial" cover, with Simon Belmont proudly displaying Dracula's head...

As to the OP, I'm positive the Gameshark had some sort of collaboration with Sony, but it fell through... I remember back then, if you sent an old model Playstation in for repairs, they would send it back with the Parallel port disabled, pissing a lot of people off (since they couldn't use the GS anymore).

It's important to realize that 12 years is a long time in gaming. This was right near the PSX's release, meaning that even the N64 had a good year more in the oven before arriving. The PSX wasn't a run-away success for four or five more years leaving this era firmly in Genesis/SNES territory. In 1995, I was playing Killer Instinct on XBAND and tearing through Super Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island, etc. Most magazines didn't go monthly until the early Nineties, so they were still in their infancy and almost as old as they come.

Sometimes I'll head to the Goodwill store in town, because people donate old gaming mags. I found the first issue of EGM2 in there. Entertaining stuff to be reading such an old mag, knowing how the future turned out.

Did you guys know that Squaresoft is partnering with Nintendo for an RPG project? Could this be an RPG starring Mario and crew? We can only dream!

I've got that issue of Foul: Videogame Subculture with Ron Jeremy as Mario on the front. ;) Of course, it's not that old... I have my issues of Popular Science from the Eighties and early Nineties along with every issue of Nintendo Power from the 1995 January Bonus Issue and onward (and every earlier issue I've managed to collect). I may have some old Next Gen mags with Gex on the cover, but I'm sure they don't have what I'm looking for in it.

I've got a bunch of Nintendo Power issues from July 1994 up to 2001 when I stopped my subscription. There's a lone issue of some magazine called Game Players with the 32X right on the cover and telling me the games for it were hot which I kinda doubt.

I also have this GamePro issue that focused on Hand held gaming back when the GBC was out. It's mainly about Pokemon and the Game Boy throughout the years but there's also a few pages about the Neo Geo Pocket and Game.com. There's even a Capcom ad in the back which features the defunct Resident Evil GBC port as "Coming this Fall". I'm sure I have some GamePro and EGM magazines from the mid nineties as well.

I still have a metric shit ton of gamefans, it was my favorite publication in my hay day. Favorite ones are the Guardian Heroes cover and their Panzer Dragoon Zwei cover.

And the first magazine sub I ever subscribed too, it has Killer Instinct for SNES preview on the cover. I think it's a Gamepro.

Yes, it was the parallel port version, but AFAIK they made later PP versions with no authorization/license. It was the first GameShark, so people couldn't just assume what it was and what it worked with. Even so, in order to have the PS logo on it, it must be licensed.

I remember that there was a couple of different Parallel port additions. I had one that doubled as a mod chip as well as an AR/GS. It was interesting to dig through all the video files and audio files for my games.
(This was in 98) I know THAT one wasn't authorized.
I think that there was a GS one that was authorized though because I did own it. I thought that with "teh internetz!!!11!!" I could hook up my GS to my computer and download new codes and such was cool.

The oldest magazine I have is a Game Player's Nintendo Strategy Guide from 1988 with guides for Castlevania II, Ninja Gaiden, Flying Dragon, Wizards & Warriors, Zelda II and Metal Gear. (There are a few others.) It also has reviews for upcoming games like Defender II, Gauntlet, Blaster Master and Super Mario Bros II.

    Man, brings back memories!

Waiting every month for my magazines to come in so I could play the newest demos on the floppy disks. The only way we could get our information was through these magazines. It's amazing how far we've come.. now I can all the demos, cheats, reviews, and news within seconds.

Haha, I learned almost everything I know about gaming thanks to a huge stack of GamePros, EGMs, and Nintendo Powers from around 98' - 00'! :P

I also have the first issue of, I think it's called "Nintendo Player's Guide." You know, the one with all of the 8 year-old kids as editors? It is indeed hilarious knowing the future while reading these. Especially when half of the mag is a 'strategy-guide' for the original Metroid, stating that you can 'BEAT THE GAME!!' This is of course untrue, as all of the kids commenting, keep calling Samus a man. ;-)

I was flipping through that GamePro issue about handhelds and they started talking about a company that Nintendo formed that was working on a device for the Game Boy Color that would tap into your cellular phone. Then they go on about the soon to be released GBA having the ability to access the internet where you can chat and get e-mails. What ever happened of those plans? I guess they just scrapped them and implemented the idea years later with the DS.

I have about 80% of GamePro, all of PC Accelerator, and all of GMR. I have various other issues of Edge, Play, PC Gamer, Games for Windows/Computer Gaming World, and the like.

I think those controllers were made by Interact or MadCatz. My brother had one, and it sucked. The shoulder buttons were kind of on the underside of the 'rang, and they were really stiff. The D-pad would flay your skin off if you tried to use it with Darkstalkers or Street Fighter Alpha. He sold it to Babbage's for $5, which was at least $4.99 more than it was worth.

Anyway, I have a bunch of old GameFans from 1996, and I can't find anything about the original GameShark. It is, however, hilarious to see the editors going "OMG GRAFIX" about Crash Bandicoot and Shadows of The Empire.

Yeah, NTT DoCoMo made cellphone adapters for GBC and GBA in Japan. Off hand, I know Pokemon Crystal and Mario Kart Super Circuit used it ("Mobile System GB" or something shows when you boot an imported Mario Kart SC). Service has been shut off for a long time... for both adapters.
