I'm looking for some good fighting games to put on my DS. They can be one-on-one fighting games like Street Fighter, or side-scrolling beat-em-ups like Viewtiful Joe.
I currently have... Street Fighter (Alpha 3) and Viewtiful Joe. Any other suggestions?
Street Fighter Alpha 3 for the GBA was awesome, but my fingers kept ending up rubbing over the screen when doing crazy super moves. I never realized I have such undisciplined finger movements, but it almost made it unplayable for me. The d-pad was too close to the screen. I guess the SP would solve this problem, though
SF Alpha 3 was good, I still have my copy. The DBZ Supersonic Warriors 2 for DS is actually pretty fun (and competant!), so I can recommend it on the cheap. If you want beat em ups, the Revenge of the Sith game is great, actually. Replace fists with Sabers and your good to go.
Other than that, there is oddly a sad lack of MP pure fighting games on the DS. I hope they fix this soon.
EDdit: Whoops! Forgot, KoF EX 2 for the GBA is also great! Very well done, if you can find a cart I would grab it post haste.

I can vouch for both TMNT and Ninja Five-O. Both of them ooze with old school beat 'em up goodness.
I also have heard that there's a Mortal Kombat game coming to the DS soonish? It's been a while since I could call myself an MK fan and I haven't seen any media on it, but I suppose it's worth mentioning.
Yeah - Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is coming to the DS with online play and the Puzzle Kombat that was on the consoles in MK Deception (also online). They are claiming it will be an arcade perfect translation.
For brawlers, Revenge of the Sith was fun, TMNT is great but short, River City Ransom is good, Double Dragon was fun, and Final Fight One is a great version of the classic.

That's really good news; had they been trying to port one of the 3d MKs i wouldn't have bothered...might give UMK3 a shot though.
Also, I don't think anyone's specified yet, but we are in fact talking about the GBA version of TMNT, not the DS version. I haven't played it myself, but something tells me you probably shouldn't bother with it.
If you want a fighting game, Jump Ultimate Stars is where it is at. First game I have ever imported and it makes me wonder what other amazing games aren't getting released over here.
I only found out about this game yesterday and got really excited, then I remembered that the GBA only has four action buttons. If anyone has played it does this affect the quality?

It does on SFAIII GBA. I would say that it's annoying but still playable depending on your playing style. It wasn't too bad for me because I never use medium attacks anyway, so I just set the shoulder buttons to hard punch/kick and the face buttons to light, and basically did nothing with the mediums. If you wanted to have all the attacks usable, you can technically do it. More annoying is the lack of ability to save between fights IIRC. But you can shorten the matches to 30 second, one round victories.
Playing it on the DS is a big cocktease, because you have all those buttons you can't use.
Also, there are a number of good King of Fighters games on GBA.
Actually, there's only 1 good King of Fighters on GBA:
King of Fighters EX2: Howling Blood.
The first KOF EX, Neoblood, was pretty much a turd. It looked and sounded like a Gameboy color game and is way too easy.
KOFEX2 looks fantastic; I would say that it is just about as on-par with King of Fighters 2000 as you could expect from a GBA title. Great animation, great sound effects, excellent music, lots of characters, excellent striker system, well implemented combo system, great controls, good difficulty settings/curve. It's awesome. It's like a portable KOF 2000, except with some interesting new tidbits to the fighting engine, and some new characters. Tough boss battle, too. Highly recommended.
For DS, I recommend Bleach DS; it should be coming to NA pretty soon, although you can always import it (as I did).
There's Gusntar Super Heroes, that's a good beat'm up on the GBA.
Dragonball Z Supersonic Warriors 2 for the DS is pretty good and the controls are simple. The story mode goes through the basic plot of DBZ in the point of view of a particular character. There are also a lot of "what if" scenarios that you unlock, many of which are interesting/hilarious. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes DBZ. However, the multiplayer is multi-card only which means you will most likely never play it against a real person.
Jump Ultimate Stars is like online Smash Bros with anime characters but you have to import it from Japan.
The Bleach games are probably the best fighting games availalable for the DS. You can import either, but if you're the patient type, you can wait for the first part to be released here in NA during november.
The first one is extremely good, and it includes online play, so waiting for the first one wouldn't be a bad choice.
street fighter 2 revival is by far the quintissential fighting game for the GBA. that game is so damn fun and near perfect emulation of the original (and supers), with added features a'plenty to keep you playing.
that one game alone lasted me on a 5 month field study, where there was no technology cept for my gba and a laptop. me and 4 of my friends just passed it around trying to beat eachothers score, and it didnt get old then, and still hasnt gotten old now.
A lot of people give it flak, but I loved the shit out of Advanced Guardian Heroes.
The slowdown wasn't that bad and only showed up at certain parts. However, whenever you connect an attack there's an "Action Pause" like many action games have. I think a lot of people confuse those with slowdown.
The game itself is awesome, with TONS of playable characters, time attack modes, different endings, and different difficulty levels to promote replays.
I've given tons of play time to the game, and honestly the slow down isn't that bad and didn't bother me at all.

The whole second level was slowdown. Nearly unplayable due to it.

The two parts with the tanks on the raft are the only parts that have a lot of slow down.

Well, ye see, that part is when you've started to get the hang of playing the game and getting raped by that magnitude in the ass just when it's starting to feel alright can have a negative effect on the enjoyment of the game.

The tank parts are easy even with the slowdown. It just happens that level 2 is a fucking hard level. There are 3 boss fights in a row and then only a short break before the actual level boss. Every play through of the game I've done, it's always been Stage 2 that gives me the most problems, mainly because the tough boss battles and the fact that you aren't leveled up enough to be as monstrous as you are later in the game. Stopping because of Stage 2 is like stopping at Cerberus in DMC3.

I actually don't remember any slowdown at all in AGH, and I played it enough to clear it on every difficulty and unlock everything. Maybe I wasn't paying very close attention, but I also got the impression that people were confusing those "action pauses" for slowdown in several instances. I thought the game was merely "okay," though. It took a long time to unlock a diverse number of playable characters, the counter system that the combat is built upon was a little too simplistic for me, and there's no single cart multiplayer. I still liked it a lot more than Astro Boy though.
As far as straight-up fighting games are concerned, I can't recommend Bleach DS 1/2 enough, but I'd wait for the US release before jumping on board because of the larger North American wi-fi userbase (that is, if you life in North America). There's a small NA community for JP Bleach 2nd that still plays fairly regularly, but it's not much.

It's not the "action pauses" but rather the fact that during the first part of the second level the game has some really gamebreaking slowdown that throws off your timing and fucks your shit up, to say it bluntly. Still a pretty good game but hardly worth the money.

edit: the Megaman Zero series is pretty much a fighting game with some shooting. Perhaps not what you have in mind, but a great series nonetheless.
What about the Mega Man games?
Guilty Gear X
King of Fighters EX 2
Dragonball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2
*EDIT: Ninja 5-0 is available here, if you are willing to pay for it. It is a good game.
bleach ds (coming stateside soon), bleach 2 ds, and jump ultimate stars are worth importing as well
Anyway, SF Alpha 3 GBA is really good.

If you're good, it's TiT short. 6 levels, each can be beaten in 5 min or so. But there are un-lockables, hard mode, that extend the life of the game.
I've beaten it probably 10 times and I still carry it around everywhere with my GBMicro.
