The PS3 is widely considered to be the most durable non-Nintendo console of the optical media era, so you may not need the warranty.
At under a year into its release, it's way too early to jump to any conclusions about durability. It certainly seems solid thus far, but systemic quality issues may very well not manifest themselves until the bulk of consoles out there have seen a year of solid use (Or more).
You just can't make this sort of claim when the console hasn't been out for a full year even. (Better yet, it's best to hold off on this sort of claim until late in the product lifecycle, when there's a worthwhile sample size to be judging.)
(That said, I didn't feel the need to invest in the warranty for mine.)

Well compared to both the Wii (green pixels) and the 360 (RROD) the ps3 has had very few issues.
Just so you know, Watching Blu-Ray movies over component offers no improvement whatsoever over DVDs. If you want to watch them in HD (720p or 1080p, if you have a newer HDTV), you have to use an HDMI cable. Any analog connection will downgrade the signal to 480p. Something to do with copy protection or HDCP something or other. I'll let someone a tad more knowledgeable tackle that.
This is false. You can get all the way up to 1080p through component. HDCP is currently not in use, and it's doubtful that it ever will be.

Yes, but the comparison was to all optical media consoles ever. Takes a bit more time to validate that one.
Ok so I just got home with my new ps3 I got resistance superman II blue-ray disc, component cables and a two year warranty from circuit city total came out to be 625. was it worth getting the extended warranty?
Also there was an empty bag inside the box could i be missing something?
there was one controller, power cable, av cable, controller cable, broadband cable, manuals, and a catalog should there have been anything else?

huh wonder if I can cancel it. also that was 625 total after using the points.
Also my tv and ps3 are nowhere near my computer/cable modem. whats a good cheap receiver I can buy to hook the ps3 into my wireless network?
you don't need one? the ps3 has built in wifi.
what?!?
It keeps telling me that the broadband cable isn't connected
Check your settings -> Network, and switch it from Wired to Wireless. Scan the area and all that.
Have a PSP? The setup is the exact same process.
I have a 150 bucks in circuit city rewards points burning a hole in my pocket. So I've decided to buy a ps3 what are the must own games I need to get?

And 300 as my Blu-Ray guinea pig.
You only need HDMI for 1080P. They are not enforcing the step down for Blue Ray, just regular DVDs.
Let's say you use an HDMI/DVI adaptor, and plug your PS3 into a monitor via the monitor's DVI slot.
Will there be any 'step down' in quality for BluRay movies, if you do this?
I'm not really sure if you're joking, but this has no been my experience. I haven't taken exact measurements or anything, but I have no trouble watching TV while the 360 is running, but I can barely hear stuff over the PS3. It could be that the frequency of the PS3 hum is more disruptive to my hearing, but, in my experience, trying to watch a movie with the PS3 is like sitting in a wind tunnel.

Really? That's odd. My PS3 is pretty much silent. It makes my PC sound like a vacuum cleaner attached to a boat motor. I haven't heard a 360 running so I can't compare. But when my PS3 is running just about all the ambient noise seems to drown it out.

Maybe I'm just weird and am super-sensitive to noises of that frequency. My boyfriend doesn't seem to think the PS3 is that loud either. All I know is that I find it slightly less disruptive than his XPS laptop (with 3 mega fans chugging). I always have to turn the speakers up like 5 decibels whenever the PS3 or his laptop is running, but not for the 360.

This will work fine, as long as the monitor you're plugging it into has HDCP support for its DVI input.
I am using a 24inch Gateway LCD for this purpose and it looks fantastic.

The reason I ask is because, although I've seen games on my friend's monitor, I have not seen a BD movie on it. He claims that it's the greatest and clearest and most beautiful thing, to watch a movie on BluRay.. but I'm about 99 percent sure that his monitor does not have HDCP support...
I've had both, and anecdotally, yes the 360 is several orders of magnitude louder than the PS3.
At least, thats what I and all my friends thought anyway.
I have everything running right now and a fan, and I can't tell which is quieter, my PS3 or my fan.
however my 360 is by far the noisiest, mainly because of the extra fans I added to the back of it.
My PS3 has been deathly silent. The 360 is like a vacuum sometimes. But either way, when I'm playing a game, and one I especially enjoy, I don't notice any system noise at all.

Honestly, my 360 is pretty quiet except for when it has trouble loading from the DVD drive. I can hear it strain for a second, then settle back down to unnoticeable levels. The PS3 sounds a little louder normally, but its disc drive isn't as loud.
Really, I don't know where all this "olol 360 is jet turbine" is coming from. Every PC I've ever built / used was louder than either the PS3 or 360.

There are different drives for the 360, each having different volume levels. This results in endless and futile debates about how loud the 360 is. One guy has the quiet one and says it's not loud, the other guy calls him insane because his is loud, so therefore they must all be, and on and on.
A friend of mine has both, and it's noticeably different.

How dare you come in here with perfectly rational explanations!? Not even a "olol Sony"? For shame, Daybreak; for shame!
Is there a way to tell the difference when you buy it? Do you know if the newer models are any quieter? I'd probably replace mine when the 65nm price gets forced down by the rumored 45nm design.

While normally I'd consider a "LOL Threespeech" I think I'll skip it this time. I mean, what do you honestly expect them to do? They are a pro Sony blog, semi-offical at that. Would you rather them ignore the game? I guess the real offense is calling it a Review, when in reality it is a very uninformative preview. Also, they suck at writing.
I watched someone play the demo the other day. It is your standard beat em up with a few extra tricks, like Dragon's Lair style button presses. It looks pretty good. This is not going to be the title that "saves" the PS3 though.
It seemed amazingly similar to God of War. Which I suppose is nice for all the people who love the God of War series - for me it was getting a bit repetitive after an hour or so.
Heavenly Sword hardly seems revolutionary - though it does look VERY pretty. I may get it - but I already have Ninja Gaiden Sigma for my melee action gaming needs. And to be honest, the gameplay styles of Ninja Gaiden Sigma, God of War, and Heavenly Sword all feel really similar to me. Run around, block or avoid attacks, and remember which sequence of hard and light attacks to hit to trigger the good combos. Rinse. Repeat.
Eh. I guess that's what I get when I get God of War and Ninja Gaiden Sigma in the same weekend and actually expect different games. Silly me.
I think the most exciting thing about Heavenly Sword is the cinematics. From the few minutes worth in the demo it's really engaging and ties in superbly with the gameplay. I'm very intrigued by that whacked out sidekick, and remember Andy Serkis' character is most likely going to have quite a prominent role.
It did feel a lot like Ninja Gaiden etc. but I haven't purchased and played through such a beat-em up in a long time, so maybe Heavenly Sword will fill the gap. It looks good.

I think the problem is that I bought Ninja Gaiden, God of War, and downloaded the Heavenly Sword demo all this weekend. If I had been like a normal person I probably wouldn't have gotten so annoyed at the similarities.

Yeah. My friend does this with his PS3. Looks great.
If you plan on watching BluRay movies on it, in 1080p, you have to make sure that the monitor is compatible with that, though.

Yep seems that way. Still have my region free/upscaling over component DVD player hooked up for this reason (and the couple of region2 dvd's I have).

Silly me.
