I currently have a urge to play some giant hulking mech games. Somthing more of a walking tank simulator rather then an arcade interpretation.
With MechWarrior 4: Mercs pretty much being the last of the kind for the PC, their hasn't really been any offerings the past half a decade. My somewhat last hope was Front Mission Online, but hell we'll never see that in the states. Is the future of mech games on the PC doomed?
So i'm wondering if there are any mech type games in the works for the PC (maybe even consoles) or ones i've yet heard about that y'all might know of?
I'm about to break down and buy an old xbox, and grab Steel Battalion:LoC :x (no campaign mode ftl) :x
I've never been one for major PC gaming. I currently run a shitbox from hell...
Steel battalion runs reasonably cheap nowadays since they aren't BC. Thats the only luck Ive had with a Mech game on a console. I really wasn't into Mechassault or Chromehounds (later on).
Me and my brother have been holding ourselves back from buying a used Xbox, a copy of steel battalion/LoC, and Laning the fuck out of it for 1 v 1 GIANT ROBOT ACTION.
Also, the LoC servers were shutdown I believe. so that game would be totally useless for anything other then Lan play.
You can still play on Freeplay on LoC, it was just the Campaign with persistent stats and such that got shut down. But really, its just not the same when the Mech your using in a battle isn't actually on the line and everybodys using 3rd Gens... That is, when people are actually online... Then again I haven't played it online since my Xbox headset broke, playing without voice chat sucks.
And as far as currently available Walking Tank Simulators goes, Steel Battalion is really the only option out there. God I would kill for an Xbox 360 sequel. And if you do want to play it online, your best bet is to hit www.steelbattalion.org and check their forums for the times they organize games.
I picked this up too, it was much better than I was inspecting. I figured that SRPG + mechs couldn't be too bad, since it works for Front Mission, but it ended up being hella fun.
While they're not the stompy mech games you're looking for, if you've got a GBA either of the Super Robot Wars would be worth trying out. You can pick them up on the cheap too now.

Microsoft have not announced any intention of developing a sequel to Mercenaries. No other mod team or software publisher can do so while Microsoft hold the rights to the game, although there is wide interest in doing so.
In March 2003, it was announced that Mechwarrior 5 had been canceled. As of July 2007 there has yet to be any official word on future titles in the series and it's doubtful that any further PC releases bearing the "Mechwarrior" name will be produced by Microsoft. This has led to a decline of interest in the series due to Microsoft's attempt to shift interest to the more arcade-based MechAssault series.

Heart = break.
Seriously, it's not as if it even has to be PC specific. They could very easily make a multiplatform mech-sim (not the arcadey style stuff they've been focussing on), and it's not as if there's any shortage of decent developers who'd be willing to take on the licence.

You can try Chromehounds for 360. It's extremely slow going though. Like the slowest mech game ever made. The chances of you actually enjoying the game are slim, but if you do like it, you'll probably be hooked.. like me :P
Also, the upgraded version of War World is coming out on Xbox Live Arcade sometime this month. It's arcadey though.
Your best bet would probably be MW4: Mercenaries on PC, with the fan mods and additions. There's still fan support for it, including an update pack with new mechs (http://www.mektek.net/projects/mp3/), and a High Def patch with higher resolution textures and models (http://www.mechstorm.net/hdp.html#ins). The high def patch is even now being developed for the latest MekPak addon, currently in beta. I even found a preview video of it here.

Hahaha. That's pretty hilarious fanboyism in that quote. First, the idea that Microsoft is out there squashing a fan developed sequel, as iff there could be a situation where mod teams would have free reign to develop a Mercenaries sequel (like, Wizkids donates the entire BattleTech/Mechwarrior license to the public domain). Second, the suggestion that other publishers are lining up to buy the license, but Microsoft is just asking for too much money or something -- because, you know, all the other giant robot licenses are doing so well on the PC right now, and BattleTech is being left out. Has there ever been any sign that anyone else wants to buy the license?
Someone recommended that when I created a thread like this a while ago. I went to ebay and won an auction for like $25 with shipping and the son of a bitch never sent it.
What was the deal with MechWarrior: Dark Age? Was it supposed to be set before or after the Invasion of the Clans
Way after. Victor took control of C*, C* made themselves a huge power, taking in something like every world that's 200 light years away from terra, and ruled it for like 100 years.

I take it that everything went to shit after that?

Pretty much. Anyone with a mech was a big deal, since everything they used via mech building was destroyed, and they could only maintain. They started using Aggromechs as weapons because they just couldn't get enough parts to maintain actual war machines.
Man, I'd kill for a new Mech game. I loved Chromehounds, HG, MechWarrior, Mechcommander, Titans of Steel. I'll even throw Armored Core in there just because it features big robots in a different way. The fact that they think an arcadey Mech game would be better than oldschool Mechwarrior2 is blasphemy. Blasphemy.
The Japanese ACE series is fucking awesome and totally worth the purchase of a Japanese PS2 to play them on.
Dynasty Warriors: Gundam comes out at the end of the month.
As said earlier in the thread, the best mecha game on PS2 is RAD : Robot Alchemical Drive. That game needs a next gen sequel, if only for the amount of pants it would destroy.
I too lament the death of MechWarrior. 3 and 4 were probably the best Mech games ever made for PC.
Anyone still playing Chromehounds? I just picked it up for the 360 and I like it, but I'd like to try online games. (I'm scared of the internet if I'm not with PA'ers)
Blah, looks like Mechwarrior 4: Mercs is my best bet again for the pc...
The old Heavy Gear 1 was awsome (I played through the whole campaign mission etc), 2 was meh for me since using the joystick in that was pretty much a death wish instead of the mouse for some reason.
I've played RAD, the giant remote control robot isn't really for me, but the scale was awsome.
So pretty much no new mech/sim like games in development?
I realise what I'm about to say is probably heresy to a lot of people, but I really want a Robotech / Macross game where you can change between modes on the fly, with both ground based and space based missions.
Double bonus points if they can include the awesome missile swarms.

Have you tried "BattleCry"?
EDIT: Beaten on the Macross, but my Dark Ages comment still applies.
Also, back to Silpheed's inquiry on MW:Dark Ages, the reason it's called DA (at first anyway) was the fact that Comstar got shut down. With the lack of communication (and mech production reasorces), things really went to shit. However, I recently got to see something wierd. 3-legged, 120-ton Goliath class mechs. (For those of you with a working knowledge of BT/MW the previous heavyweights were the Assault class, weighing in at 100tons)

Esplain please. Why is it that I have not seen a Mechwarrior sequel in too long a time?

What... the... fuck... I'd rather have a full fledged console game.
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division is pretty sweet. Recomended.

They have.
If they fixed all the weird game mechanics that came from trying to directly shoehorn the abstract RPG rules into a sim game, I'd be all over it.
I'm with you on that one... the Heavy Gear universe is just uber cool.
The only downside is that with LoC since there are so few players you can't really improve at all, and even if you do it'll be hard to tell.

With maxima amount of player only ever reaching 16 and 1 server. :x
Anyways, the older Transformers Game for PS2 (the one not related to the film) is really pretty good. Steambot Chronicles also has tank controls.
