I was wondering if I could get some help from my fellow GnTers
At my house, we have three computers and a 360 set up on a wireless network. The one that has the router and the modem is never in use, but one is in regular use, and the other... well, there's the problem.
That computer is my dads, and he is constantly on Limewire, which kills the connection to the other computer in use (mine) and makes the 360 hard to play on Live. Is there any way for me to limit the bandwith that goes to Limewire on his computer, without messing up my computers (I use torrents) or the 360s connection? I've asked him to limit the use of Limewire, but hes a dick and doesn't believe it makes a difference.
Make sure he knows that Limewire installs tons of malware and its just a matter of time before his computer has to be serviced.
I tried that too. His response:
"I've got Norton"
Well security software is only as good as the person using it, and its not going to stop stuff he purposefully installed from working. I mean in the License Agreement it SAYS its going to install third party software.
when i torrent the part that kills my connection is the uploading, so i limit it to 5k during the day and turn it up at nite when no one is using the connection. Have you tried limiting the uploading?

Well this sucks. Sucks even more that my dads an asshole who doesnt listen to his son on something he knows more about.
Is he the one paying for the internet?
Nope. I am.
So change the key whenever you feel like having your own internets. If he doesn't want to compromise then he can go without for a few hours.
This would work, except he would break me then break my computer, and then ground me. Not a viable tactic.
Uhh... I think this problem goes deeper than technical advice. There are some real life issues in this thread.
Nah, that was just an exaggeration. But I would be grounded from games and the computer... and tv... and the phone... and leaving the house.
Dude, your dad has serious porn issues.

There is one more option, packet shaping!
You can do this on your router if it has the firmware for it. Now by default, I don't know of any consumer routers that are able to do that. Check out http://www.dd-wrt.com for this. In particular, DD-WRT's option is called Quality of Service. It lets you prioritize traffic based on type and/or through ports. Perhaps this is a solution for you. I wrote some other thread about dd-wrt, feel free to search for it.
Tell him to pay for the fucking internet if he's going to be an asshole about it.
I concur.
I don't complain about my parents' internet habits because they pay for it. Not that they seem to be as bad about it as your father seems to be, by any stretch of the imagination, but if you're paying, just fuckin' cancel the service and let him pay for it if he wants to be a dick.

Otherwise you're stuck.
"SHOW ME WHERE IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE THATS NO FASTER YOU ARE LYING LIMEWIRE DOESNT MESS WITH ANYTHING"
I can't get onto his computer.

Our linksys router has QoS options to limit upload speeds by bps, and also prioritize ports on the router relative to each other.
I concur.
