Just bought a video ipod...

Just got a 30 giger. Loving it so far. Using handbrake to encode DVDs left and right. Got some questions:

I have Zuma and Pac-Man and they're pretty awesome. Any good third party games?

Looking into an FM tuner, extra battery and case. Suggestions?

Any other must have utilities you can think of? I've already got Sharepod.

Is there a particular reason you want an FM tuner? Because you are probably better off getting some sort of adapter that plugs directly into your dashboard and/or sound system. I've tried out a couple versions of iTrip, and they both output pretty weak signals. For the price of one weak FM transmitter, you can get a cassette deck adapter (assuming your car has a cassette deck) for your car and cables to plug into your sound system at home, both of which would probably give you better sound quality than an FM transmitter.

Not a transmitter, something that will let me listen to the radio on my ipod. I live in NYC, so I'm always on foot.

He said FM tuner, not transmitter.

My iPod is black and white, I have no answers.

In my opinion, this is the best ipod video case out there: Contour Design Showcase.
And official website for Showcase Video.

I've also used the older version of the same case ("i see"), which lacks the rubber around the edges, and is instead 100% clear. Either way, you'll barely notice the case on the ipod and will completely protect it from any minor bumps and scratching. Mine remains in near new condition after 18 months of use now. And the case doesn't have to be removed to use any of the ports, although naturally it won't fit into some docks due to the slightly added width, but that is true of any case.

Apple has it's own FM Tuner.

Yeah, I'll probably go with that. Any third party games out there? Good ones?

Zuma will KILL your middle button. Mine no longer clicks and any touch will be enough to register as a press. Then again, my wife absolutely loves Zuma and proceeded to play it almost nonstop for a week until she could beat it.

I have never seen any third party games, and I think apple has that stuff locked down pretty good.

Not sure what you'd need a battery for. Plug it in each night and it should be good to go for hours. Unless you watch a movie or something intensive, then I only get about 2.5-3 hours out of my 60GB.

As far as a case goes, I recommend getting the "Invisible Shield" (or similar imitation of good quality) and no putting it in a case. It's a sweet overlay that keeps scratches off your ipod so you don't have to worry about it (except if you drop it) and it keeps it's small size.
If you must have a case, my father-in-law has a Rhino-skin aluminum back lexan front case that is absolutely awesome. You could probably throw the ipod and it would survive. Adds a bit of thickness to it though.

Yeah, I occasionally take a bus up to Ithica - want the extra power for that. I kind of guessed that the pod was pretty well locked down, but I was hoping there might be some kind of homebrew scene, but I guess not.

Does anyone know if the widescreen toggle stretches or zooms? I think it zooms, but I'm not sure.

EDIT: On a second look, there seems to be a ipod Linux install, which is interesting but I'm not sure I want to mess with.

How rampant is the problem of click wheels stopping from working? My roommate has had his iPod for several years and his wheel just broke I guess. I wouldn't say he ever mistreated it either.

Yeah, I think the battery will last a whole day if all you're doing is listening to music. I don't know if games eat as much power as movies do, but I only get about 2.5-3 hours when watching movies. I think the widescreen is zoom, because I remember the iPod taking a standard aspect ratio video and putting extra bars around it when it was on Wide-screen mode.

As for installing other stuff, don't you always have a fail-safe with the "Restore iPod" command in iTunes? Or would it not even recognize the iPod if you installed Linux?

I've never really heard of the problem so I can't imagine it's too widespread. I've had mine for 1.5 years with no problem (other than my wife wearing out the "click" of the center button by playing Zuma too much) but that's nowhere near the several years your roommate has had it.

It depends on if the linux install overwrites whatever ID bits are installed on the iPod that iTunes uses to identify it as an ipod and allow you to restore it. I'm not sure if that's hardcoded or on the HDD.

It doesnt override it permanently, I had Linux, Rock Box, and currently have my whole iPod skinned and modded thru iPod Wizard..and all of them can be overwritten.

I even partitioned the iPods hard drive for Rock Box and everything went back fine when I restored it

I've put Linux and homebrew apps on my Ipod, and let me tell you, it's really easy if you follow the instructions. It's impossible (well, near to) to permanatly brick it, and the only real consequence of messing up is all your data gets erased, but that shouldn't be a problem since I would assume you'd have the original still.

Yeah, I think some sick part of me just wanted a doom port on mine, even though it would probably control horribly, but it looks like the 5th generation isn't really supported yet ( http://www.ipodlinux.org/Project_Status ) so I'm not sure I want to fart around with Linux if it's going to be crippled on my machine. And there doesn't seem to be anything fun or useful to do with it.
